Four myths to avoid in the NFL draft per Dave Hyde.

Here is a headline...it's slow this time of year. Heat are locked in for playoffs and resting players, Marlins are just getting started so no interest, and the Panthers are in the playoffs...but who really cares outside of a few of us dedicated ones?
It' a week before the draft so why not? I enjoyed the read and you know those myths are being spouted by every armchair GM.

Thanks Dave

I agree with him on 3 of the myths but not the first round RB. Lots of great first round RBs drafted in the NFL. Czonka for one! Phins would not have the Zonk without a first round pick. Whats Up with that?

The QB piece sounds good, but the reality is 1st round QBs are the ones given the opportunity to play. Very few QBs drafted outside of round 1 are given the keys to the car.

So don't waste the 2nd round QB pick on someone you won't give the keys of the car too I guess he is saying. But I agree with you that it's a factor.

This is really a biggie. Teams draft "developmental QBs" but they don't really develop them! Typically, on most teams, the starter gets like 90% of the practice snaps and attention, and the remainder goes to the backup, who may or may NOT be the young kid. If the "developmental QB" is the 3rd QB, he gets to pretend to be the opposition QB and not much else.

I don't think it's any accident that the most of the QBs drafted outside the first round who have become starters have gotten their opportunities because the starters got hurt. That was true of Brady, Cassell, Schaub, Fitzpatrick, and Moore among current starters. In desperate situations, teams actually gave these guys some coaching, and they played much better than expected. Last season, Moore got better as he got more experience. Coming into OTAs and TC as the starter could make him better. That's not saying he'll be confused with Peyton Manning, but he could develop into a pretty decent QB with decent coaching and a decent team around him.

You're right, and it creates a chicken and egg argument: are the 1st round qbs successful because they're that good, or because they have the committment of the team behind them to play them, coach them, and stick with them longer when they struggle? Is the way to get a franchise qb to take an early 1st rounder, or really just to totally commit to the guy you've picked, no matter what? Those tends to go hand in hand.

Look at Sanchez in NY. Statistically, he's Chad Henne. But he's been given the role of franchise qb, never questioned about being the starter, supported when he's struggled, protected by his HC, etc. Henne, on the other hand as a 2nd rounder, has been benched, waffled about, looked to have been replaced, not supported when fans and media have attacked. Not saying either is any good, just a very interesting comparison between 2 similar qb's based on where they were picked.

That's a good comparison, remember Sanchez went bananas because his coach was giving reps in practice to the other qb last season one time.

Henne's development was definitely stifled with the way he was handled and with the focus and attention spent on the wildcat.

That said, there is more to it than Hyde scribbles. Romo was not exactly a high draft pick. Look at what Andy Reid has been able to do with his QBs. A good offensive minded coach and agressive OC and QB coaching makes a HUGE difference in developing QBs. Don't forget, Hyde is a m0r0n. :ponder:

Well on the brighter side, it was still better than an Armando writeup but then again so are most middle school writeups.

He wasn't even drafted at all. Hyde pointed that out in the article.

Now that the Sun Sentinel is charging for online content i will not be reading him or Omar anymore. You can still catch them on WQAM daily interviews for free. Thanks for posting ... bring on the draft.
