Hawkeye fan, checking on a former player here. Just wanted to see how Fred's doing in the mini-camp? I don't know your feeling, but I think you just stole one of the best players in the draft. Fred is a great guy and I think you'll be very happy with his performance. He's small, but makes up for everything with his heart. Typical Iowa player.

Read some of the reports. A couple of guys commented that he was pretty impressive. On a Miami sports station one of the camp observers commented that they were impressed with him as well.

None come to mind really. He's very small 5'8", but very quick, and could be a great 3rd down back and ST player on returns. Dante Hall size. He carried the load for Iowa in the Big Ten. Hula Bowl MVP. Outback Bowl MVP.

Poster "outtawack" said he was MVP of first mini-camp. Hmmm... Travis may be hearing footsteps. Wouldn't bother me if Russell's the bomb.

Actually I think he'll do better than the practice team, but what do you know?

Well, here's the sit:

Behind RW is a Travis Minor, who's sort of a scatback kinda guy and been with the Phins for, I dunno, is this is 4th year? He's been generally productive when he's been put in as a 3rd down guy but he doesn't get put in much with Ricky around. He's somewhat of a fan favorite though I've never been impressed with him very much.

Behind Travis is Leonard Henry who is a bit of a bruiser with decent speed, appears to be instincitve and with good field vision. Personally, if Ricky were to go down, Henry looks closer to the pounder that RW is than Minor and I'd like to see him get a shot at 2nd team.

The bottom line is we've got decent depth at RB. I don't know, they kept Charlie Rogers last year as a 4th RB / KR, but that was based on his KR responsibilities (which he failed at, miserably).

I've read some good things about Russell though, I'm pulling for him to make it.

Fred Russell is my MVP of the first practice, this kid is insane, I saw him cut in and out of defenders better than anyone else. He caught everything thrown to him and just made plays. I know its only the first day of camp, but this kid will be exciting as a back up or returner.
----Highlight: Fred bobbin and weavin during any drill he was apart of.

He's got a chance as a return specialist. He's small, but he's very explosive. Fred will never be an everydown runner in the NFL, but he could very well become a Brian Mitchell/Dave Meggett type of running back.

....maybe........until he gets nailed one time.

But the dude is powerful............he is fust the returner we need, imo.

He is very fast, can cut in and out of holes, although he is short he will be able to tack hits fairly well cause he is muscular and powerful.

I predict him making the team and competing for return specialist duties.
