Frerrotte the CARETAKER!

Actually, he was the starter but got injured. Then some guy named Kurt Warner came in and changed everything. Green would have been the starter if it weren't for the pre-season injury.
I don't see Gus as a care-taker. To me, Kyle Boller defines care-taker, he can't win you a game but he can convert a few third downs on occasion. On the other two downs, he just hands the ball to Jamal Lewis and if that doesn't work... well, he's got that great defense behind him. Gus on the other hand, has already shown that he'll be throwing the ball deep and making plays (he's avoided two drive-ending sacks with some footwork). I don't see him coming in and rewriting the record books but he will be a leader and a key role on the offense, not just a care-taker.

Kurt Warner had 2 really good seasons for St. Louis. Since then he has shown only flashes of those performances. He is an average QB.
What it demonstrates to me, is that sometimes you have to be in the right offense, with good chemistry among the skill positions.
Frerotte has a nice arm and has had some success in his career. With the right coaching and with the right chemistry among our skill position players, there is no reason to think this offense can't become a very good one during the course of the season.
I wouldn't trade our RB's, TE's and WR's for those of the Pats, Jets or Bills.
We do need to see some progress along the O-line for things to fall into place.

I am hoping the Gus situation turns into a Gannon situation without the neck injury.

I remember watching the game when Brooks came in and hit gannon below his helmet. When he didnt get up, I knew that at his age, his career was over. Rich was trying to not get hit, but the way he slid, it happened to be perfectly into Derrick's helmet

Having Gus being named the starter this early is only going to help him, and the other guys on the 1st team. I don`t think he`s going to put up big numbers, but if he`s able to play all 16, then I think he`ll throw for 17-20 TDs, 12-15 picks and somewhere around 2500 to 2900 yds.

in this O, I think he'll do a bit better than that...

I'm thinking more like 25 TDs, 15 INTs, and about 3200 yards. Not MVP #s, but by far better than any other QB on our team in recent seasons

Come on KB, this is NOT the Last 3 Years...

Gus's splits over the past three years look like this (granted, it is a small sample size, but it could be showing a trend):

116.4 QB Rating
57.6% Completion Percentage
690 yards
10.5 yards per attempt
7 touchdowns
2 interceptions

His splits as a starter over that span:

134.8 QB Rating
66.7% completion percentage
506 yards
11.2 yards per attempt
6 touchdowns
1 intereption

This was just the stats for the for his 5 games he participated/and or started in 2003, NOT the last 3 years...

His stats in 2002 in was: 44 comp, 85 att, 437 yds, 1 TD, 5 INTs, and a QBR of 46%.

His QBR for the 7-8 games he had over the last 2 years is a total of 10 points better than AJ has avg, a whopping 77% QBR...

Look at the stats, Gus's avg QBR is EQUAL TO Fiedlers'...

I dont really think they're pro bowl #s....Aaron Brooks had 600 more yards passing, and 4 less TDs, yet still didn't go to the PB.

I just think that he'll throw somewhere in the mid 20s, and since he wont be making the silly mental errors that we've been accustomed to in the past, I said mid teens INT wise

I mean, Culpepper threw for 4700 yards, and 39 TDs, 11 INTs. Gus is not Daunte, not even close, but the offense will be very similar. Ronnie will be used as a receiver on many occasions, we have a ton of other receivers on O, and subtract say 1500 yards from Daunte's total and give them to Ronnie and Ricky

Caretakers Seems like the Right Stuff...

Gus and Fiedler comparison in stats... Caretakers??? seems to be the right terminology, IMHO...

Gus's career...
Total 111 games, 64 GS, 2141 att, 1169 comp (54.6%), 15097 yds, 7.05 YPA, 77 TD, 66 INT, 209 (+20 yds or 18% of comp), 39 (+40 yds or 4% of comp),and 76.1% QBR...

JF's career...
TOTAL 74 games, 60 GS, 1704 att, 1000 comp (58.7%), 11737 yds, 6.89 YPA, 74 TD, 66 INT, 155 (+20 yds or 16% of comp), 23 (+40 yds or 2% of comp), and 76.9 QBR...

That's the stats, see if there is a big difference between them... I don't see it...

I hope Gus proves me wrong, but we will know as the season winds down...

I know starting a thread always leaves you open for debate... which is good. I know some of you dont like Gus termed as the "caretaker" But my point moreover was that Gus has to step in and play smart. Not play upto prowbowl expectations. Just make those plays that turned into INTs the other way that previous QBs made in the past. Heck... throw the ball away.. anything but throw for an INT. GuS has to take care not to throw this season in toilet with poor decisions while we can find that QB that will perhaps lead us into the future.

Gus has already proven hes willing to share his knowledge with the players his competing with.... admirable Id say.. and guy who knows where he stands. he would bean excellent mentor for a young kid to watch before we thrown him the wolves!

GUS... THE CARETAKER.
