Friday Buzz: Pouncey starting right guard for much of practice

I know it's up in the air whether Philbin will turn out to be a good coach or not, but can we stop pinning EVERYTHING on the man? Why do people blame Philbin for things that's the responsibility of the GM?

Hickey told Shelby's agent that he was disappointed in the suspension. This one was on Philbin, and I believe he made the right choice.

So since philbin made a mistake in the past with richie, he should continue on that same path and not learn from mistakes? Bad logic if you ask me.

Looks like we are going with Pouncey at RG, and cannot even imagine anyone questioning Benton on this.

I completely agree.

I was responding to Spesh's post in which he was trying to make some ridiculous locker-room/coach-distrust issue out of the whole thing. And my "Mr. Team Member" was a reference to his badge.

One criticism from some players (but not Cam Wake) about Dolphins defensive coordinator Kevin Coyle is that he occasionally puts Wake in pass coverage.

Didnt even need to search for an example of players being disgruntled about the coaches. Neat.

Agree with Roy, consistency is way overrated. To learn from your mistakes you make different decisions which obviously means inconsistency, also agree that you shouldn't be consistent between your superstars and 53rd on the roster. You do what is best for the team, and that does mean treating your superstars different from average players.
Also pleased Pouncey is at RG, that is our best line.

Guy acted like an ass at a hookah bar, refuses to leave, resists arrest, gets arrested. Pretty cut and dry. I didn't expect the indefinite suspension but it is what it is. I'd say the discipline he's facing is just. I'm pretty sure he won't be strapped for cash either. Can see him back once the full details of the incident are gathered, barring anything significantly bad we don't already know. Philbin isn't wrong here.

Im didnt mean to imply he was wrong in this particular case. I dont have an opinion one way or another on that situation at the moment other than its a stupid situation for Shelby to be in.

But if your going to have a consistent standard for this team...then, you know, you actually have to have a consistent standard of treatment. Philbin might not be wrong here, but giving full pay to a terrible coach who also lied to his face(Jim Turner)? Fighting tooth and nail for Mike Sherman, knowing full well our potential franchise quarterback was sick of the terrible play-calling? And the drama with Coyle the last few weeks. Players know if they dont play well they will get fired. Coaches apparently get a free pass. To say nothing of the gutting of good players who happened to speak up and raise mild concerns to our staff(Bush, Long, Dansby).

I dont have a problem with Philbin disciplining Shelby. But he should have punished Richie and, at least, Jim Turner as well. He should have let it be known no one is above getting the hammer dropped on them. But right now all our players see is friends escorted out of the locker room, money leaving their hands, and the coaching staff getting to do whatever they want. Combine that with Philibin's 17-19 record, and its not hard to imagine people getting sick of it.

I believe Philbin wanted to cut Richie after the golf club incident, not really a good analogy.
also, wouldn't the decision to withhold pay be made by the GM?

I vaguely recalled that, but was couldnt quite remember. If our teams emotions flare, they will look at the bottom line. Ireland is gone and, while i have no doubt he left a lot of hard feelings, Philbin wont be able to continue using him as a scapegoat.

The withhold pay thing...if your referring to Shelby then i suppose it ultimately is Hickey's decision. But Philbin has been the one attached to this thing. He's been the one preaching ethics the last few years. Perhaps Philbin fought vehemently for Shelby and the players ate it up. But until i see something about that(and its been close to a week now for that information to "leak") im assuming Philbin gave his full support behind the move.

as far as Richie's "putting stroke" incident, if the reports are true, Philbin wanted to treat the player harshly but was over-ruled by Ireland. that would mean the coach is fairly consistent regardless of player status. actually, the reserve player(Shelby) would be getting treatment less harsh than the starter in these two cases.
on Shelby's pay, I don't think it could be done without the GM and was probably a group decision by at least the GM and coach.

Are they allowed to back-pay Shelby if he's proven innocent or if the charges get dropped?

They can. The issue might be appearances. Players have a contract clause about ethics and behavior that doesn't hedge on legality. In short if you do something and make the team look bad you can be punished.

I am really looking forward to what Fede brings. Sometimes opening a door for another player brings good tings. Shelby was foolish.

Players complaining about Wake being in coverage once and a while tells me we have some very dumb players on the team still.
