Fritz Pollard Recommendations

And to further expand on the Rooney rule.....it's the most retarded thing brought to the NFL table. To me, it devalues a black man going for a coaching or GM job. So we have a list of candidates that we like but we have to bring in an African American for an interview that we have no interest in hiring? It wastes that mans time from getting on a flight and going through an interview process, money and time well spent elsewhere. And it's not fair to him that he knows his time is being wasted because of this rule.
To me, if you are the right man or woman for the job, these teams will seek you out. I don't know, maybe we can get some feedback from our African American posters here on this subject

The long term success of Ozzie Newsome as Baltimore GM, means that every NFL team should be open to simply appointing the best person for the job regardless of race. I am foreign and have difficulty understanding why every appointment should not be strictly merit based, but I have been around long enough to understand and accept that racial sensitivity is real.
I just want us to find the best GM prospect out there. Doesn't matter if he/she is white/black/yellow/red/brown. The process should be seen to be fair and let's just get the best.

I agree - hire him!

Before I get spammed, let me fully disclose that I am Black. Yeah, I could use the term African-American, but I was born in '75 and calling me a Black man is just fine with me.

I bring this up because I noticed that none of the named candidates for the current openings are men of color. The Rooney Rule is not there just so teams can comply with a cursory interview. It's there to allow minority candidates to get a foot in the door. I want you to look honestly at the following profile and tell me that this would not be a worthy candidate for our GM position. My point being that Ross has an opportunity that he is not seizing. Why waste interviews on crappy retreads like Pioli, Tannenbaum, and Mangini.

Lionel Vital, Falcons director of player personnel:
Vital is a former NFL player, he has over 20 years of scouting and personnel experience, and has helped find players for some of the premier organizations in the NFL, including the Patriots and the Ravens. He has been a part of multiple Super Bowl franchises and has spent the past six years under Atlanta GM Thomas Dimitroff, who continues to develop top personnel execs who go on to become GMs (Les Snead to St. Louis and Dave Caldwell to Jacksonville most recently). Vital began his scouting career in Cleveland under Bill Belichick, and was with him in New England from 2000-04, in college scouting, and thus has vast experience on the pro and college side. And he knows Smith's division, the NFC South, inside and out from his time in Atlanta.

I suspect that in today's society any really good candidate would get interviewed for a top NFL position when that person is highly qualified irregardless of their race or the Rooney Rule.

And if it has to be a black man, can we steal Ozzie Newsome away from Baltimore???

Since [STRIKE]stealing[/STRIKE] getting Ozzie would require breaking NFL rules, you'd probably have to give up a couple of #1 picks for signing him.

I'll be honest. I don't want to hire a guy for the job just because he's black to feel better about or Fins participating in being equal opportunity employers. White, black, asian, hispanic, middle eastern, I just want the right guy for the job.

I think everyone is for the best hire possible. When I look at all the candidates, Gamble impresses me too. I think the Rooney rule exists because we've all seen the same retreads get jobs over and over again without a minority interview.

no problem!! thats a bargain seeing how our other gm's have cost us 5 times that many #1 pics. :boohoo:

Because Pioli sucks, BB had no interest in bringing him back to NE, and KC was kind of a mess and Pioli brought Matt Cassel as his savior.....no thanks. And as for NE having talent and Pioli bringing that talent in....when was the last time anyone saw a Pats player leave and become better or even stay as good as he was under BB. Benefits of having the best coach in the league by half a mile and a top-10 all-time QB(that Pioli lucked into in the 6th round, so I don't give him credit for that either).

Racism is dying but not dead

your kidding, right?

probably need another forum for this, but, go breakdown in COMPTON and come back [if you live] and tell us all about the dying racism.

go to east l/a, baldwin park, la puenta and hang out. see how long you "welcome"!!

go ask an asian or asian store owner in the compton/watts area how their treated, if they experience any racism. what do you call WILDING and the KNOCK OUT GAME? blacks are not the targets. and its getting worse, especially in las vegas, nevada.

come to arizona and see the illegal hispanics throwing rocks at whites and at their cars. beating white kids in schools. spray painting anti white slogans and taunts on white owned homes and businesses. you dont get a lot of media coverage on that because it would go against the communist agitators and race baiters image of arizona being the desert harbor for white racists. cant have the truth get out!!

just way to broad a statement DLOCKZ.

I agree that some of the application of the Rooney rule has been uneven. Many interviews are cursory and a waste of time, but I don't completely devalue the reasons for the process. I'll give you an example that's become a very recent problem. When you look around all 32 NFL teams, how many have an African-American in an offensive coordinator or QB coach position? Sure, you can find defensive coordinators, linebacker coaches, defensive line coaches, secondary coaches...but there are only 3 teams that currently have African-American offensive coordinators. Harold Goodwin (Cardinals), Pep Hamilton (Colts), Jim Caldwell (Ravens). With Jay Gruden getting the head job with the skins, Hue Jackson might slide on up in Cincinnati to make it 4.

Now look at the head coaching vacancies and who teams are interviewing. With the league designed as it is now, teams are increasingly looking to offensive coordinators as head coaches. It's a problem that very likely doesn't sort itself out on its own. I dug this article up from 2012. Just have a read and give it some thought. http://espn.go.com/espn/commentary/...de-nfl-hires-offensive-defensive-coordinators

That's why I've always felt job applications should have no race/sex/age on them. Only a number designating the applicants resume'. Then after those are culled through, you'll find the best few candidates and interview from there. (sorry off topic a little - it's just a pet peave of mine).
But I'm with everyone else, I don't care if the guy (or gal) is black, white, pink or purple. If they get us winning I'll be their biggest supporter.
