Fritz Pollard Recommendations

It sounds like Red McCombs has it on Life support and is willing (& has the $$) to prolong the agony.

In no way, shape or form did McCombs statements point towards or even hint at racism. But of course, the race-baiters in the media took off with it and told you what to think. Of course it's racism. Hell, they told us talking about Obama playing golf was racist at one point.

McCombs' comments probably had a whole lot more to do with his disappointment in the fact that UT crapped the bed in their pursuit of Nick Saban.

I agree that some of the application of the Rooney rule has been uneven. . When you look around all 32 NFL teams, how many have an African-American in an offensive coordinator or QB coach position? [/url]

At the same time how many teams have a white starting runningback? Maybe we should require teams to interview a white runningback before they sign someone, wouldnt matter if it was Adrian Peterson that was available the team would have to search out a white running back just to fulfill this requirement before signing. yea that sounds completely idiotic just like this Rooney Rule is. Teams are going to hire the best man for the job regardless of color. If they don't, well then their business will fail and they will suffer anyways for their racism.

The Rooney rule is completely useless. It needs to be eliminated.

What a lot of people are upset about is the shameless propagandizing and shilling for African-American candidates that goes on every time an opening is created. The minute a GM or coaching opening comes up, here come the Internet commissars and trolls extolling the unassailable virtues of this or that "brutha" in the hope that maybe if they raise the noise level enough, some team will hire an underqualified candidate, or one with flaws, JUST BECAUSE of their skin color... which to me is the very definition of RACISM.

I watched a few years ago when UAB had a bball coach opening, where their president basically came out and said they were going to hire the most qualified available "black" candidate they could find. It was HEAVILY implied that no non-black candidate need apply. They indicated that they were interested in selling tickets and recruiting and that a black coach would somehow enhance those abilities.

I am afraid the NFL is falling prey to the same mentality, especially at the QB position. I have posted before that I believe we are not far from a QB Rooney Rule where the league will require every team to carry at least 1 AA QB on its roster through some defined point in training camp. And I also believe they would LOVE to have starting mobile AA QBs in certain cities for the sake of ticket sales and $$$, and are willing to strongly encourage certain franchises behind the scenes in that regard... and Miami is one of those locales.

I think a lot of the Tannehill-bashing is racially motivated along these lines.

Racism unfortunately is alive today, it has just reversed direction on the part of some people.

african american, men of color, black, what the hell is appropriate these days? i can't keep up.

All this got me thinking about a few years back when I was a manager at Fridays I used to work with another manager that was mixed. Her dad was black and her mom white(from Germany)and one day I asked her tis question. "Who do you think are more racist, blacks or white?" an d se said " Blacks are more racist but they're not afraid to admit it" to which me and another manager said to her could it b cause blacks will get away with saying anything but if a white person says something then they're call haters or racist?" And she said probably. This thing goesboth ways. It's not one side as it used to be years and years ago. The rule is stupid. Any owner/GM in the right mind will hire whoever is going to help them win. We don't need to hear about this rule every single time there's an opening. I hope we hire the best person regarless of color or where they're from.

Ozzy rules!!

I can't comment on your opinion regarding the hiring of the head basketball coach at UAB because I'm not familiar with the situation. I will say that if they didn't consider all candidates, regardless of race, they were wrong.

As to your other comment about the NFL unevenly promoting Black QBs, I think that's nonsense. Yes, the NFL is a business and that business sells an entertainment product. I think your argument falls down in a couple of places. First, I don't think the NFL cares whether your QB stands like a statue or runs like the wind. All they care about it is putting a quality product on the field that fans, ALL FANS, enjoy. When Mike Vick had his heyday in Atlanta, there were just as many white guys walking around in Vick jerseys as black guys. Same thing with RGIII last year. Fans like a winner, regardless of race. Second, I look at the crop of college QBs coming out, and there is no dilineation between them as far as style of play and race. In this year's draft, Teddy Bridgewater is regarded as the brightest pocket passer and the most athletically gifted passer coming out is Johnny Manziel. I think the race barrier for QBs has been totally broken.

If you want to see a real example of discrimination, look no further than the CB position. Where's the next Jason Sehorn?

Since [STRIKE]stealing[/STRIKE] getting Ozzie would require breaking NFL rules, you'd probably have to give up a couple of #1 picks for signing him.

Deal! When can we get this done?!

Haha Sehorn, yeah where is the next white CB? In reality though and no one likes to hear this but I'll say it, let's face it most blacks are faster than whites in football. It would take a specially gifted white person to get a CB job in today's NFL. I don't thinks it's racist, it is what is is, getting the best person to play the position.

Charlie Strong got the Texas job. Racism in football is dead bro.

The minute you think racism is dead it'll raise its ugly head again. The NFL may be making some minute headway but don't kid yourself MP

I knew when NRA wandered into his thread his first post was completely meaningless. It was merely a set up for what he intended to say later, with whites as the victim.

As always, you can't fool a handicapper.

According to Fritz only non minorities should interview for the GM job. Doesn't that defeat their purpose? I'm exaggerating of course but by the time the minority candidates decide they should interview the job will get filled. And that's a shame because there are several minority candidates that are excellent candidates. But seriously let's find the best for the job no matter what color they are.

IMO, there are three types of racism (1) intentional and hidden (2) intentional and overt (3) unintentional. By unintentional, I mean the bias that comes from the familiarity of being around people like you. There is nothing inherently wrong with having a greater comfort level with people that are more like you. Minority communities celebrate their common culture. They are proud to be African American or Latin or whatever, and they should be.

The NFL has historically been dominated by whites in ownership, management, and coaching. It is not right but it is a fact. Because of that, there are more experienced white candidates than minority candidates. Combine that with bias, and minority candidates have a hard time getting noticed. The Rooney Rule (IMO) is simply a reminder to teams to widen their search to include qualified candidates of all races, not just the typical white candidates. It will not convince a racist to hire a black coach, but it might cause an owner who would never dream of excluding a candidate because of race to include a few more candidates in the interview process. That could lead to the hire of the best candidate who just happens to be black. That is good for the candidate, the team, and the NFL.

An increase in minorities in coaching and front positions becomes an incentive for more minorities to enter the field and the pool of candidates grows over time. At no time does anyone need to hire a less qualified candidate simply because they are black.

How is Ross or Highsmith more worthy than Pioli

I'll say it like it is...

Because they aren't white -> which further perpetuates "distinctions" in and of themselves and why i can't stand the Rooney Rule -> they should tank it and let the teams find the best person for the job.

The Rooney rule is a slap in the face for the guy who is really not being interviewed for a position, but is really being summoned to appease a rule. It would PISS me OFF!

Let the teams figure it out, they figured out that they can win with Black QBs. Because they WANT TO WIN..., more han they want to hold prejudice. Just let the teams figure it out
