i am by no means advocating ireland as the best GM in the NFL, Ive been critical of him in fact, but its kinda gotten ridiculous here at finheaven with the piling on of ireland. its clear at this point that sparano is not a good coach. it was clear by the second half of last season, and the warning signs were even evident in his first year looking back.
Ireland is a different story entirely, and u see ignorant articles like this popping up around the internet:
http://finnation.com/?p=4332&utm_so...ee-agency-mistakes-of-the-irelandparcells-era
EVERY SINGLE item listed took place while parcells was CALLING THE SHOTS in miami and assigns the blame to ireland. pat white?? are u kidding me? its come out since that draft that pat white falls squarely on parcells shoulders. why are we still assigning the blame here to ireland?
its pretty clear at this point that Ross had a mandate to limit spending in the offseason, and the only thing we can fairly judge ireland by at this point is this years draft. the early returns certainly indicate we had at the very least a good draft.
if you want to be critical of ireland thats fine, but if your going to be critical of him - at least be ACCURATE in your criticism. and keep in mind that you dont TRULY KNOW what he was responsible for when Parcells was here. for example, while in dallas, parcells didnt want demarcus ware he wanted DL marcus spears. the cowboys took ware and spears was still there at 20. the cowboys ended up with the best pass rusher in the NFL because of ireland.
Phillip Merling was essentially a FIRST ROUND PICK. new england vacated their 32nd pick (in the first round) miami chose merling in that spot. this was a parcells pick. and merling is a first round bust. jake long was a parcells pick (perhaps ireland would have opted for Ryan - we simply dont know). pat white was a parcells pick. trading ginn, trading satele for nothing and signing grove to a huge contract - all parcells moves seemingly.
pile on ireland if you want, but the book hasnt been written on the guy yet like it has with sparano, there are simply too many things the public doesnt have information about that goes on behind closed doors. if ireland was in charge for the past 4 years, clearly the blame would fall squarely on him. the FACT IS HE WASNT - PARCELLS WAS. and we dont know how ireland has graded players. all we have to go on is this years draft. i say only the draft because its becoming pretty clear the plan was to limit contracts for veteran player acquisition, perhaps in an attempt to clear the books for a potential new coach next year. if this is the case, we cant really blame ireland for not bringing in guys as band aids to plug the holes that clearly exist. even a guy like columbo - how do we know sparano didnt push for him??
im not defending the guy, im simply saying 80% of the criticism thats heaped on the man simply isnt accurate, or deserved. the vast majority of it should fall on parcells plain and simple, and the only thing we can ACCURATELY judge ireland on at this point is this years draft.
