Garner at C, Pouncey at G: No Brainer?

i think any NFL person would laugh at anyone who suggests moving an elite center to guard, and replace him at center with a journeyman O-lineman.

garner's value to this team is depth OL at all five positions. and thank god for him this season (and previous seasons).

if dwight stephenson or jim langer or mike webster walked into the locker room at 27 years of age, an NFL person might take you seriously about putting pouncey at guard. but suggesting moving a potential all pro center to guard? laughter.

Just because San Diego's D is, what, 27th in the league...it doesn't mean they cant play. Any Given Sunday.

San Diego's 27th ranked D went up against two interior backup linemen, and Clabo who acts like a PS. Yet our OL did good. I really hope McKinnie gets re-signed for 2-3 years.

I think you guys may be getting ahead of yourselves. San Diego's front is not exactly elite. Let's see how Garner continues to play but there seems to be a reason he's been a back for two different coaches now.

I absolutely agree that this is worth exploring, and also because Pouncey seems to be giving away the snap with his head motion. Garner does not do that.

For once, let this coaching staff please try something proactive. Pouncey was a guard in college and all I've heard is that it was a more natural position for him. Give it a shot, what's the worst that can happen? Bad OL play? That's just par for the course this year.

Give me a center who doesn't give away the snap count like he does. That to me was the BIGGEST difference yesterday (ofcourse blocking is a given requierement).

Next Sunday might be brutal, and have us all clamoring for Pouncey and Ritchie back. I though about including Martin, but F*** NO!!

I still would rather have Pouncey at center. He is athletic and can pull like a guard. He is a top 5 center and if he can keep his head on straight he has a chance to become one of the best we have ever had obviously with Stephenson being the best. What struck me from the OL play Sunday was the athleticism that Brenner brought. Too me I would give Brenner a shot along side of Pouncey to give us more of that athletic play. To me this is the kind of OL we need not cornfed big boys like Jerry and McKinnie. Granted the SD line wasn't that great so Brenner's showing could have been more impressive than reality but never know until he gets some chances.

I say remake the OL to be like the old Denver OL's when Shannahan was there. I think those OL's averaged under 300 lbs but could move quickly and pull aggressively. This is what we need. Pouncey at center and quick tough guys around him. Maybe Brenner would become one of those.

Interesting idea, considering that he played guard at Florida when his brother was the center. He had a little bit of trouble at the beginning when he started playing center at Florida. However, he was a beast at guard.

3 years for McKinnie? Really?
The guy is 34. I don't see much tread left on those tires. Find someone good in free agency, and if not then in the draft IMO.

This is very true. Pouncey's true position is at guard. He only played center one year in college and honestly had a ton of issues with snapping the ball. That hasnt been an issue in the NFL though. Regardless, he would make a great guard

Move Pouncey to Guard....I know Cleveland's center (Mack) will be available during free agency, sign B. Albert and go to the draft for the other positions...

Now, with what I'm about to say now, please don't misinterpret, but with Pouncey out last night, there was more cohesiveness than there's been recently as all 5 were/are on a similar par level of ability to each other, including Brenner, granted it's not the level that we need as we continued to see pass pro issues, but they worked well together and had decent success in the run game. I'm not saying get rid of Pouncey that he makes our OL worse, I'm just saying that there's such a difference in talent level between he and the other 4.

You're absolutely spot on in your analysis. The line needs an overhaul because we need more players like Pouncey, and less like Jerry and Incognito. Going forward, I would like to see a lineup of McKinnie (LT), Pouncey (LG), Garner (C), Brenner (RG), Clabo (RT). Shifting Pouncey to LG strengthens that side of the ball and allows him more freedom to pull or get to the second level. I also would start Garner and Brenner the rest of the year to see how they hold up with a larger sample size of snaps. The scouts should be scouring the tape looking for more athletic players on the line...I would start at Oregon.

Garner was flat-out better at C than G, and Pouncey is a better athlete than anyone that plays O-line for Miami and G is a great position for better athletes. You could really start having more motion run plays and such.

But then, that might be considered bullying and Pouncey might quit.

JK.

Im on board. What Pouncey does very well is get out to the second level and make blocks. This will be an asset at guard pulling, I think it is more beneficial to have a more athletic guy at guard rather than C
