Gator Hoskins will make the team as C Clays backup?

Someone is going to miss out and it won't be Arthur Lynch. At long last, Egnew is being given some decent opportunities and there is a chance to evaluate whether he can be a real weapon or not. Since the big schlong arrived, we have heard about his alleged good hands but Sherman gave him very few opportunities. In Lazor, we have an Offensive Coordinator who saw the Eagles TE's and Riley Cooper (a big WR who catches the ball) as serious weapons while he was the QB Coach. At a minimum, Gator Hoskins probably makes the Practice Squad. However, it might come down to a flat out contest between Sims, Miller and Egnew for the final TE slot on the roster and you know who has the superior athleticism - Egnew.

Lynch is sneaky good as a receiver. He doesn't have explosive speed, but it isn't slow either and he can find those soft spots up the middle for decent games. People who think he's just a blocker will be pleasantly surprised. He's a Fasano type dual player who excels at neither but is very useful and dependable at both. Obviously I'm talking about college production and we have to see if that will translate. But I think he will to a decent degree.
I met Lynch after the first session on Friday. A couple of immediate observations. He is extremely well spoken and I'm not surprised that he was a team captain at Georgia. The other was the sheer size of his hands. Massive.

Egnew is better than Sims so far, which is more a reflection on Sims than Egnew...

How do you know? depth chart? which means nothing to me at this point. I ussually wait another week and the first preseason game to comment on such things. Nothing is set in stone at this point.

Egnew is being given his last chance to prove right now IMO. Taking Sims reps.

No way! Athleticism? The guy cant run a seam route. His blocking must be much better though and his size prob helps. He drops the ball at times too at key 3rd down spots. doesnt get seperation IMO.

Egnew's 40 time was 4.62 seconds (3rd best TE in his Combine). Lynch and Sims ran 4.75, while Miller ran 4.85 seconds. You may also be surprised that Egnew excelled in the vertical jump (=1st), the broad jump (1st - he jumped a record 10'11" - he still holds the TE record jump by 3") and the other events (3 cone drill he finished 3rd, 60 yard shuttle, 3rd). While the Big Schlong is best remembered for his Hard Knocks near tearful appearance, most fans forget that he had an incredible 2012 Draft Combine and that meant a lot to Ireland.
I stand by my earlier statement that Egnew is the most athletic of the four.

Lynch is a good blocker too its down to Sims or hopkins in my opinion. Egnew is gonna be used better and thrive. Just my opinion. Sims doesn't offer much as a receiver the way I see it but I'm not sure Lynch does either

I agree with you here. I think it's going to come down to Hoskins or Sims. Egnew is a good fit for Lazor's offense.

Philbin spoke highly of Hoskins in his post pad-practice presser. I've predicted practice squad for Hoskins but you never know. He's said to be an uncanny understudy for Clay.

This is my thought as well. The bigger issue, though, is if the team keeps six wide receivers. I like the highlights on Hopkins, while Lynch doesn't overwhelm in anything I've seen. I believe Sims and Lynch battle for the last spot and Hopkins could make it to the practice squad. News out of camp is good so far for Egnew.

Doubt they will carry 2 undersized h back types in clay and Hoskins unless the talents just rediculous...Hoskins more p squad candidate IMO...promote if clay gets hurt type stuff

Unless sims just sucks in pass pro I see no way they cut him especially when right tackle right now sounds like it will need a lot of help...to offset protection issues team may have to play more 2 tight end sets...obvious in line candidate is sims...

I'm sure the team knows that...if James shows issues in preseason I bet sims will be in line just off of him a lot to try and compensate come regular season

And he has the best highlight package I've seen since Russell Wilson's.

And Egnew had one of the worst highlight packages I've seen for a drafted Dolphin playmaker. Right up there with Daniel Thomas.

I'm overly excited about Gator. I think we got the real deal with him. There are passing situations where I can see Lazor salivating at the options Clay and Gator on the field at the same time may afford him.

Mogwai - I respect your opinion. So I'm very interested to hear that you're excited about Gator. Did you get the opportunity to see much of his college football? He sounds very good, how the hell did he go undrafted? Welcome feedback...
