GM and OC on shaky ground..for what it's worth

Just get a freaking new GM, chances are that GM will want to hire his own HC, and there's lots of teams looking for a head coach right now, so hurry up Mr. Ross.

ESPN made a mistake. I have it on good authority that Jeff Ireland just got the job last Thursday, and he only got "Final Say" on the following Monday.

I heard Philbin has complete control over oline. Hence why it's sucks so bad..

So is Ross going to fire Sherman without Philbin's consent? That's a great way to run a functional organization...

Hopefully we have a decision by the end of Friday. If Ireland isn't fired the fanbase will go ballistic.

I suppose I sound like a broken record, but I'm just stunned that Jeff Ireland is still employed by the Miami Dolphins. Enough is enough.

I think that retaining Philbin and firing Ireland and Sherman is exactly the correct decision.

As to what GM would accept a job without being able to hire his own coach, I think that prospective GM's would be salivating at such an opportunity. Just look at Gettleman in Carolina who neither hired the coach nor drafted the QB.
In such a situation the new GM gets a free pass for the first year because he wasn't allowed to bring in "his guys". If the team does poorly then he gets to hire his own coach and draft his own QB. It buys such a GM a lot of time before his own performance is evaluated.

But I'm sure if Ross takes this approach he'll be labeled as the biggest moron in the world. In truth, it's the shrewdest decision he could make and the quick turnaround of the Carolina Panthers is evidence that adopting this model can lead to success. The parallels between the Panthers and Dolphins are even more relevant considering that Tannehill will also be entering his 3rd year as starter. Give him a new OC and QB coach and combine that with the natural improvements that QB's typically make between years 2 and 3...

This requires a collaborative approach. Not an authoritarian one. people tend to think Irish is authoritative but he was collaborative and always has been with his coaches...maybe to a fault?

I recall Jeff saying when they hired Philbin, "I just hope he can coach"

he is telling you he agrees with the owner to work with the new coach.

I certainly hope the new GM is a personnel guy. I agree that the relationship should be collaborative, but not perforce as it is with the Jets because Idzik is a capologist as was his predecessor Tannenbaum.
