Grade Hickeys first draft and why?

C+...he filled some needs but left a 3rd rounder on the board IMO by not trading out of 19. He gets the plus because this was a pretty weak draft in general.
Is this your opinion?
Because every expert, who analyze these things for a living, say this is one of the deepest drafts in years.
i'll give you a grade in 3 years.
No one knows how any team did till then.

C

Uncreative and pretty much acted as though his hands were tied... throughout the draft

Like the draft but nothing spectacular to comment on...

B- I didnt like the jj pick. A rt at 19 need or not was poor value. I wanted cooks.after that though thought it was good. I think Brandon cooks and a trade up to grab a tackle in the 2nd. I liike the guy the bills drafted in the 2nd

C just don't believe in his small school recruits. Not one of these players is taking us to 10-6 THIS year.

Wins and losses is the only metric that matters. This draft class won't get us any further than 9-7, so I give it a C-.

I would give a final grade of C to C+, Hickey defiantly grades different than the analysts. It looks like he values tough guys. He took alot of SEC players and smaller conference players.
James- 49 Games... its a lot for a lineman in a 4 year SEC College Career. Its not an impressive thing in a first round pick. i would love this pick at 50.... and it would have been ok to trade up to 40ish. C-
Landry- Leading Receiver on an SEC team in his senior year. played some as a True freshman. Should bulk up some and can be a great addition in the Slot. i like this pick at 63. B+
Turner- Started 56 Games... Was injured in the fall of 2011 and only missed the season opener. started the rest of the season. Should be a rotation player on the line. not a great pick at 67 but not with our next pick at 125 if you wanted him he was a good pick. C
Aikens- Made a mistake in 2010 in Illinois so his character is a question mark, it cost him draft position. He played in all of his teams games in 2011-2013 and started most. a good pick at 125 C+
Lynch- Team Captain and started 25 games at TE. Rib injury cost him a game and a half his senior year but he was back on the field for the final 4. Started as a true freshman then sat out a year as a red shirt. i like this pick at 155 B-
Tripp- Team Captain, Played as a true freshman, started 36 games during his career. Overachiever and motivated. had a good season then an injury limited his sophomore year. Will see the field on Special Teams. not bad at 171 C
Hazel- Started in 39 games, illness kept him out of one. I think he may make the team in a year or two but i don't see a spot on the roster for him. He may find a spot if someone gets injured. Good value but no spot. Good at 190 but no real impact this year. C
Fede- Scratching my head here. i guess he could make the team on Special Teams but i really dont see any value in this pick. He may contribute and not a bad 7th rounder. at 234 you could have had someone like Michael Sam, at least it would have been positive headlines.... I would say C is not a bad grade here C

I think you have to take the undrafted signings into account as well because look at what Seattle has done with undrafted players that has lead to there success the last 3 or 4 years.

C- Small schools and Value. If he would of just traded back in the first and picked up a 3rd

I'll let you know in December.

I will defer my grade as well. I am very curious to see if one of the team captains develop into a leader in the future. I will have to wait 3 or 4 years, but I am curious.

D.

A completely missed opportunity to drastically improve this roster with the only redeeming factor being we will get some starters. We get starters while other teams collect prospects who will become some of the best players at their positions in a few years. A great example would be the 2010 draft. Odrick, Misi, John Jerry worked their way into the starting lineup. Meanwhile, the Saints, Panthers, 49'ers, and Bengals spent the last few years laughing up their sleeves at everyone who passed on Jimmy Graham, Geno Atkins, NaVarro Bowman, and Greg Hardy.

In an absolutely loaded draft class we reached for a 2nd round pick with the 19th overall selection. The best people can say about him is "hes the 5th best tackle prospect", which i dont consider all that great of a praise. Especially not at 19. This is going to be the warning lesson for all teams when it comes to drafting for need for years to come. It almost always leads to reaches, sometimes massive ones.

I like Landry the player, i dont like Landry the selection. We had an opportunity to grab explosive players and instead settled for another possession receiver. Again, i like the tough son of a bitch, but we could have improved that unit a whole lot more by doing things differently. He will eventually replace Hartline. We made a lateral move there instead of stepping forward.

Billy Turner...im completely indifferent towards. Maybe the first few rounds took it out of me. Relying on yet another tackle prospect to covert to guard hasnt worked for us yet, but who knows. If i had a gun to my head and had to make a decision, id say he will be competent. He wont provide the kind of impact other players would have in that same round. Im not a fan of trading up for him though, would have rather kept the fourth.

The rest of the draft was depth moves. Ive been at the head of that bandwagon complaining about our lack of depth, so i cant complain all that much. Like most everyone else, i was intrigued by Pierre Desir and would have felt a lot more comfortable taking him over Walt Aikens, but thats hardly my biggest complaint of the draft.

Our draft was a lot more reminiscent of the Cowboys drafts than the Packers. And as the Cowboys have repeatedly shown, drafting for need leads to failure. We spun the tires, while teams like the Packers, Saints, and even the Jaguars and ****ing Jets took 3 steps forward. That leaves us 3 steps behind. Again. For all the money we've dropped the last few years and all the draft picks we've made, i still believe our 2010 team was superior to any unit we've fielded since with the exception of Ryan Tannehill over Chad Henne. But how much could Tannehill improve a 7-9 team by himself? 2 wins? 3? Either way, that team wouldnt have competed for a Superbowl and this team sure as hell wont.

This draft knocked us back by 2 years. At least. So it gets a D. And it could easily have gotten an F if this class wasnt so talented that we could scoop up some starters. But grabbing starters over stars was a poor show.

Do you guys remember a team back in the 90's build on small school talent? That team won 4 consecutive AFC championships with small school players. Nothing wrong with small schools. Have to give them a chance. Look at last year brought us, nothing worth mentioning.

D. Big reaches in first two rounds. Passing on Manziel when you don't have a franchise QB will haunt you for a decade. Hickey is Ireland 2.0 He takes low ceiling safe need picks. There won't be anything close to a star out of all of these picks. These are the type of drafts you expect out of N.E. who already has stars or SEA. But Mia needs butts in the seats and somebody with star potential. Looking at their roster it is the most vanilla team I can ever remember. Hopefully after you go 5-11 you will find a real GM and not your 5th choice and let him hire the coach like it should be. Then you better hope there is a franchise QB otherwise no matter what you do this farce will continue. For a franchise who doesn't have a QB it really is sad to see year after year them passing on them. Ryan 'Henne reboot' Tannehill has given zero indication that he is that guy. Until you get that guy you must at all costs take a QB especially when the best one in the draft miraculously falls to you. I feel so bad for my buddy and the rest of Fin fans. He is so apathetic now and it's a shame because he is a huge fan. Not fanboy apologists like you read on here.

It's hard to say. I slammed Ireland for being a slave to need and that seems to be the case with Hickey's first draft. That said, the offensive line was so bad that reaching for James is somewhat understandable. I do like James, but feel Miami could have traded down and still landed him in the late 1st, or drafted Brandin Cooks, who I think will be elite in the slot. The focus was clearly surrounding Tannehill with talent and keeping him on his feet. I certainly agree with that.

I like the wheeling and dealing to get more draft picks. Landry is good enough to challenge Gibson right away in the slot. That could turn out to be the best pick. Love the Turner kid. He is physical and has the feet to eventually move to left tackle. Love the Tripp pick. I think he has the talent to start in 2015 and could become an instant favorite among fans - has that type of persona.

All in all, I think Miami gets three immediate starters in James, Turner and Landry. Tripp could emerge as a starter in 2015. No elite players, but some solid guys.
