Guards Galore

LT- Someone we draft or free agency
LG- Hadnot
C- GOod draft pick
RG- Shelton
RT- Carey

This can very well be what our line looks like if our coach feels Hadnot is not the man he wants to build the O-line through in the draft! He says to build a team you need a Centre QB RB and FB (He was refering to offensive side of the ball)
good post...you may end up being right on the money with OL scenario.

No way you put Hadnot at LG. He was pushed around too much to be our LG. RG, maybe...but not LG. If Hadnot isnt our starting C, then he's our backup C/G.

unless Shelton takes a paycut, he's making way too much to play RG, and where we'll be picking in the 2nd, you've got Ben Grubbs, Josh Beekman, maybe Ryan Khalil, Aaron Sears, and Doug Datish all available, then you've got the C from Hawaii in the 3rd and Manuel Ramirez. Too many good guards to pass on in favor of a failed LT.

He wasnt a "failed" LT. DMac was the "failed' RG...so Shelton moved inside because he was the better runblocker. Saban stated it in a press conference and so did Shelton.

I watched those games over again and realized that Carey actually struggled more than Shelton did in the first few games...

Ok, lets try to think realistic here. If we were to go out in Free Agency and sign a G (Dielman, Steinbach, ect.) thats probably the only "big" FA pickup we will make. Currently our O-Line looks like this.

LT - McIntosh
LG - James
C - Hadnot
RG - Shelton
RT - Carey

Hadnot, Shelton and Carey played well all year. Our O-Line was clicking towards the end of the year. Even when our line wasent playing admirably it wasent because of these three guys. Like the saying goes, dont fix it if its not broke, in this case, it is not broke.

LG and LT are going to need to be assesed. A free agent guard could be a possibility or perhaps Levi Brown in the draft. We very well may keep McIntosh for another year, the same goes for James. IMO, the two positins on the line that need help right now are LG and LT, not C, RG, or RT.

Agreed

id keep hadnot at RG....

i want joe thomas (PIPE DREAM) or hope levi is worth it at 9......

if either of these dont pan out, then we have to put Alabi in there.....

then sign either steinbach or dielman and the open spot has to be a draft pick

toledo is a waste....cut the rest of them....

lettin berger go was a mistake or bad gamble....

if we cut the rest, wheres the depth

Berger? What has Berger done? Zip! C'mon, bro...doing the same thing some of these guys were doing about Garrett. He stunk as our QB coach and people wanted him to be promoted to OC???

you don't move a LT to RG just because the RG is playing poorly.

bennie anderson and jeno gotta go...theyre both pretty bad

I agree. I liked both of the signings at the time. Anderson had played pretty well for Baltimore, and James was a very solid lineman for Carolina. Whats with all of these decent linemen coming here and just falling apart? Remember when we signed Stockar McDougle? He was pretty good for Detroit and off our team in less than a year.

Don't forget that our offensive line suffers about 15-20 injuries per season.

I don't know that Shelton is making way too much to play RG, if he plays it very effectively. It's also a luxury to have a player that can backup at LT if needed.

According to the NFLPA website - in base salary - Shelton would be the 53rd highest paid lineman in the league.

There are also 31 guards making 1.4M or more. There are 17 guards making $2M or more. That's just base salary - not counting roster bonuses.

Shoot, Bennie Anderson got a 2 year $3M deal - at that rate I feel Shelton is a bargain at a cost of $2M this year.

The thing is, unless you draft a replacement, free agents are expensive. You can draft a rookie like you suggest - spending a premium pick - but there's still no guarantee that the rookie will contribute this season - or ever.

I can see cutting Shelton next year when his salary goes up, but at this point you'd only save $250K I think. I'm not sure why you'd cut him unless you're absolutely positive that (a) you've got somebody better, (b) that person won't get injured, and (c) your LTs stay healthy.

"Hadnot, Shelton and Carey played well all year."
...
"I watched those games over again and realized that Carey actually struggled more than Shelton did in the first few games..."

-- Hadnot and Shelton played like dog-crap the first half of the year. Both played Average or better the second half of the year.

Carey played outstanding the first half of the year, and average during the second half of the year.

Jeno James played hurt. When healthy, he's very good. His several knee surgeries are a big concern though.

MacIntosh played Average. He's a free-agent... probably won't be back(Unclear... With Cameron, who knows). McKinney will be cut. Uncertain about Bennie Anderson.

Repost:
"Run-blocking Ranking(Week 8 - 2006)
Shelton(week 3 - 1.28 YPC)/MacIntosh - 29(2.35 YPC)
Jeno James - 6 (5.07 YPC)
Hadnot - 30 (week 3 - 3.35 YPC)(3.48 YPC)
Combination - 5 (5.16 YPC)
Carey - #1 (6.49 YPC)"

Shelton's 1.28 YPC run-blocking(week 3) was beyond pathethic. That's worse than a rookie. He's no Left Tackle.

Hadnot had a terrible start to the season as well, ranking 30th in run-blocking for centers (there are only 32 teams). It is even more confusing with his guards ranking #5/6 on either side.

***************
In the second half of the year.... Shelton, Macintosh, and Hadnot all averaged 4.4 YPC run-blocking.

Their League rankings for weeks 9-17 were:
Hadnot(#15) at C, Damion MacIntosh(#12) at LT, and Shelton at RG(#11).
*******
Week 9-17:
Kendyl Jacox - 4.56 YPC (#13)
Vernon Carey - 4.18 YPC (#15)

Carey seems to be the only player who got worse in the second half of the season... #1 in the NFL through week 8... he was average for the second half of the season.

I saw Hadnot miss the easiest blitz pick up ever. It was like he was blind in his right eye. I think we need to upgrade at center. I've changed my mind on Shelton, might as well keep him at RG no matter the cost. If we don't draft a LT, Mac might be the best we can do

I'd say Alabi is a better choice considering his physical skills.
