Let's start with an obvious one...Phillip Livas. This guy showed explosion on punt and kick returns. While he is a tiny guy, just think of the kind of impact he could have in our games. The field position battle is one of the most important aspects to success, and with Livas I think we have many more positives than negatives.

Matt Moore. I think he earned himself some first team reps. While he was playing against backups, he showed that he can get out of the pocket and that he can place passes at the right time. He also showed us that he does have some arm strength. I was telling my dad when he came in that he throws like a cupcake, and I was genuinely surprised to see that he had some zip on those passes. I think Moore is a level headed guy that if he learned the offense well enough, could play some good football for us.

Benny Sapp. Give Sapp all the **** you want, but he looked pretty good last night. He showed great timing with his pass breakup, and the very next play he jumped a route and picked off a pass. If he continues to play like that, I will have no issue with him being our nickel corner.

Roberto Wallace. Who knows if his touchdown was just a blown coverage or if he can get open like that on a consistent basis, but Wallace showed me enough last night to kick Marlon Moore to the curb. With his size and speed, he could potentially be a good receiver down the road.

Jimmy Wilson. After an early pass interference call, he made amends quickly and had some nice pressure and a great sack/forced fumble. He certainly looked like he could compete for a nickel or a dime role right now. It is too early to tell how he would do at safety, but look for him there as well.

Chris Clemons. Many have said that Reshad Jones should start over Clemons, but what I saw last night was a guy that added size in the offseason and a guy that was more consistent. I got pissed last season because he would tackle high and miss tackles. He made some nice timing plays last night with his blitz (where he wrecked JP Wilson) and on a pass in the end zone where he smacked a guy as well.

Nic Grigsby. I want this kid to seize this opportunity. I didn't see much from Hilliard or Sheets that showed they should make this team. I hope Grigsby does enough in the upcoming games to get a roster spot.

Chad Henne. I know I have Matt Moore up at the top, but I want to see both of these guys do well. Henne took more risks last night, which he should have only had one interception because a pass bounced right off of Fasano's hands. I liked the long pass to Hartline, and didn't like the pass into coverage to Bess that got intercepted (where Bess supposedly ran the wrong route)

Im hoping Gates can take the #2 receiver job from Hartline. Also rooting for Wallace. Ive given up hope on the QBs now...

Yea I got my guys:

Livas as the primary returner
Gates as the #2
Roberto Wallace - love our WR situation
Jimmy Wilson - Love this kid
Benny Sapp - guy gets hated on, but he is more than serviceable as the nickel. Hope the veteran can rub off on some of these youngsters with his intensity.
Kory Sheets - Let me explain, the guy has speed for days, but he seems to have the want to run it up inside with the big uglies and I respect that . . . I hope he finds more running room next game and breaks off a play or 2.
Chris Clemmons - the guy is steady and still gets hated on, I hope he has a good preseason
Matt Moore / Chad Henne - I wish both guys well, god knows we could use 2 good players at the QB position
Kevin Burnett - Love what he brings in coverage, but hopefully he can be stout against the run . . . I think he will improve with the increased reps

i don't think this team will carry a kory sheets and a reggie bush...similar games as runners and we know bush is a lock...if bush was to get hurt i think thats when the call would go to sheets to come back...

grigsby...wasn't all that impressed last night...need to see more though...i can see him as the 4th rb but i could also see him being cut for someone elses cut player and they try to stash him on the p squad...jurys out on that one

got the dvr rolling so i can key individuals today...

I need a second opinion on Columbo and Carey. Carey looked overweight and out of shape, and Columbo looked slow off the snap. Let me know what you see on that regard

i'll check them out...interior oline is also gonna get a good amount of my attention...incog and pouncey

i do know that last night at least i saw no outside pass rush help for cam wake...just guys 2 stepping with tackles...but the feed wasn't great

I think the "pass rush help" is gonna come from the secondary more than anything, kind of like we used to run that sneaky CB blitz in 2008 that Nate Jones excelled at and that Benny Sapp touched on last year. Really hard to gather much from last night on this defense . . . I wouldn't even look at the defense heavily. Focus on the entire OLine for us . . . and the running backs.

I'm looking up on Grigsby and I don't get why he wasnt drafted off physical talent alone. I mean if Vernon Gholston can get drafted #6 overall off good workouts, why not this guy?

thats true last night we played a lot of soft coverages etc and its hard to get a read on anything defense wise probably but you'd still like to see someone other than cam wake flash some talent as an edge rusher in one on one looks...my initial look last night again with a not great feed i didn't see it

as for the pass rush from the secondary these guys are gonna find ways to get jimmy wilson on the field in certain packages and send him on delayed blitzes and coming from all over...that kids an enforcer off the edge as a blitzer...thats a skill we got to put to use

Livas is the guy I will definitely be watching the rest of the preseason. If he can duplicate his success on returns I think the coaching staff has to consider keep six receivers this upcoming year.

right now livas needs to make this roster as the punt returner at least...worst case only carry 3 rbs initially...we need that make the first guy miss and explosive quality on our specials returns team...carry 2 te's fasano and clay (h back) 3 rbs if you must and 6 wrs...livas the 6th

if he continues to show ball security he needs to make this 53 and be active on game day...

I really like Gates, Livas, and Wilson. They all impressed me last night. Moore looks good although he gets haooy feet in the pocket. Maybe there will be a QB controversy soon? I think they will keep Sheets b/c he isn't one dimensional as one would think. I think he is better than Grigsby, but maybe he can show what hes got in the preseason games to come.

keeping livas which they should means moore and wallace is on the bubble
livas maybe 5 7 though he is not a twig ..

I think if Livas would make the final 53, it means they kept 6 receivers and either Moore or Wallace doesn't make the team. My early bet is that Moore would be the one released/traded if they decide to keep Livas.

Again, it was just the first preseason game and Livas still has a lot to prove to earn a roster spot but he just seemed to be a natural when it came to returner. He caught the ball and just ran, there didn't seem to be a whole lot of dancing or waiting for things to set up. He caught the ball, found the hole and went. Now maybe Atlanta just has a God awful special teams, or that Livas found luck or maybe it was a lot of combining factors coming back to the fact that it was just the first preseason game. Maybe Livas disappears in the next few weeks, who knows? If he doesn't disappear, I think he makes the team.

I didn't really know much about Phillip Livas before last night. I saw a 5'-7", 179 pound undrafted wide receiver burred down at the bottom of the depth chart. I didn't know he tied the NCAA record for return touchdowns at Louisiana Tech. Every year there seems to be one guy that catches the heart of the entire fan base, and sometimes they end up making the team, like Bess in 2008. I think Livas MIGHT be that guy.

Though I will say that if he does make the final 53, please switch to a number in the teens. #85 doesn't look good on him. lol

Moore played against second teamers but he mostly throws the ball where it cannot be intercepted. Every throw Henne makes has potential pick written all over it. Id like to see what Moore can do with the starters. I hope this is a fair competition and not just a love fest between the coaches and Chad Henne.
