Bill Polian gets a pass for the one great pick he made in Peyton Manning. Looking how bad the team was without him, goes to show that he was more hype than good.
Bill Polian had a difficult decision at the time, Peyton Manning or Ryan Leaf, its easy to sit here now after all the successes of Peyton and all of Ryan's failures to overlook how difficult of a decision it was for Bill Polian and the Colts. Bill has stated that from the beginning they were leaning towards Peyton, but Peyton was no where near close to being the unanimous or "right" pick for them at #1. But what you call being more hype than good, I call making the right decision and creating an all out superbowl contender year in and year out for over a decade. We could only be so lucky as to have a GM to provide that for us.
As for Jeff Ireland. I think he botched free agency any way you look at it. Not getting Flynn or Manning has nothing to do with it for me, but overspending on guys like Richard Marshall and Artis Hicks just doesn't sit well. As for the draft, I loved it. This league starts and ends with the quarterback position. He has said all along that Tannehill was his target and has backed up his pick with conviction, nothing I can fault there, whether or not I disagree with the pick (which i don't).
The bottom line is that his favor with the fans and his job will most likely be a result of whether or not Tannehill pans out. If he does, maybe he will be lucky enough to one day be called over hyped after contending for a superbowl year in and year out on a roster he built.
