With a new regime here in Miami we know that the rebuild is in full effect, but it’s been difficult understanding what Miami’s short term plan is.

For example, reports suggested we were in on Trey Flowers, in on Juwan James, and in on the Pierre Desir. This gives off the vibe that tanking is/was not the objective from the onset and while compensatory picks are all the rage now, they didn’t appear to be a part of our short term plans.

This begs the question surrounding our QB situation and whether we draft a QB in 2019 or 2020. It just seems hard to believe that we were prepared to spend money and compete while waiting on QB until 2020 where you certainly want to have a top 5 selection.

It’s for these reasons I believe we have a QB target in this draft, but it’s hard to see this regime relinquishing valuable 2020 draft capital to move up and grab Haskins or Murray.

It won’t be as bad as it looks. I get a laugh out of people freaking out about our lines. Nothing has ever been settled in March we should know this from being the free agent champion year after year while the Patriots sit back. There will be adds. I don’t think we’ll be great, nobody wants that anyway, but I still think it will take the wheels falling off injury wise to land the 1st overall pick. Nothing is ever as it seems in NFL football outside of the Patriots being good.

As bad as it looks our situation isn't so bad. We're clearing cap room have a shot at adding a QB this year if they fall in love with one of them and if not next year one will surely be within reach.

Yup we still clearing cap room, gathering picks, and getting out of stifling contracts to rebuild. We still want good players and so we were in on the free agents mentioned, but not for crazy long term money.

Of course Miami is going to be interested in players in F/A, but unlike in years past, they don't seem willing to over pay for mediocre players like James and others. Flowers is young and a scheme fit, but, Detroit way over paid. I like how Miami has adopted the New England way of approaching F/A. They always signed the 2nd and 3rd tier F/A. Miami also, seems to have adopted the Cleveland Browns way of maximizing cap space and then using it to acquire draft picks and players via trade, due to the abundance of cap space accumulated by the team. Brock Osweiler's trade to Cleveland netted them a 2nd. They also traded for IBJ AND OV!!! New England was able to pounce on Stephon Gilmore, when they had the cap space to absorb his new contract. This is the new norm in Miami and I like it!!!

I think it is a smart draft strategy to not go into the draft looking completely desperate for a qb. We have a better chance of one falling into our laps. Had we not signed fitzpatrick, Im sure there would have been a few teams that would be competing with us to move up to get one. Even more reason why i feel like we are in it THIS year for a qb. You cant count on getting tua or anyone of those other prospects next year. TUA may continue his schooling as his parents wants him to finish his degree...herbert i dunno...and lawrence isnt even coming our next year so i dunno why we feel like we need to be all in on something thats not even available yet.

It's a good question. I don't believe tanking was ever an option. Building right, yes and that most likely meant being in the running for a top pick.

Miami has a lot of options. I think it comes down to how they rank the quarterbacks from both the 2019 and 2020 drafts.

If Murray and Haskins are right there with Tua, Froom, Love and Herbert why not move up if you can. If not, wait and build the lines in 2019.

They won’t call it tanking, even the Sixers didn’t, but I don’t see how you can call it anything other than that. They might have been “in” on James and the other players you mentioned, but they’re not here and as it stands now, the offensive line might as well include me if it weren’t for Tunsil.

We’ll know for sure after the first night of the draft is over. If we don’t draft a QB, they’ll accidentally on purpose be aiming to be in a position to draft Tua and hit the ground running from there. That’s the plan I favor, for what it’s worth.

Right now it appears that tanking is the theme.
I am only interested in the coach and GM. If they are more of the same we have had here since 98 then tanking will mean squat and just put us further behind. If this turns out to be the Patriots way then I will be happy and happily eat crow.

I feel almost certain Miami will take a QB this year. Just not sure what round.

Grier has been pretty good with gamesmanship in the draft. Last year everyone was sure we were gonna take a QB. Later it comes out we had told TH we were going to make noise about a QB , but it was just that, noise, and he was our guy.

Now it seems that everything is pointing to a 2020 QB. We can’t be that transparent can we?

I’m saying we take a QB this year.

It's still wait and see for me. this teams is notorious for going off the rails. look at 2016, the teams wasn't good but we found a way in the playoffs. That next year Gase and co. are talking super bowl. What preceded next was total malpractice by Mike T.

I'm interested to see if they adapt the Patriots cap structure. There are about 28 teams who still can't figure out how to use the cap (even the phins). I pray for the day we can figure it out. The rams had tons of star power last year and still couldn't get it done.

I, too, believe it's a QB this year. It's a dangerous game to play to bank on next year when a lot can happen from now to then.

It's probably inconsequential but I'd like to see what we get for Quinn. If it's picks next year, I'll lean more to next year. I know it's a silly opinion but they paid for the Tanne 4 and seem to be ready to pay once again for a return on Quinn. I think paying for more next year picks is somewhat telling no matter how much I'm reaching there.

I keep repeating myself but it just has to be, has to be a trade down if we are truly banking on next year. We have to make absolutely, without a reasonable doubt certain that we have the ammo to move up to number 1 though we may not need to.

There's always 2021 picks to use as ammo but I don't like the prospect of working it that way.

I agree about next year. Not so much about this year. Miami would need to jump ahead of the New York Giants to potentially secure a QB in 2019. Costing picks in 2019 and 2020, while potentially sacrificing the ability to field 53 and drafting players at position of need in 2019 (Offensive Line)!! The buildup of 2020 draft capital, could suggest they are gearing up to have maneuverability to position themselves to draft someone they like, if they don't get the #1 or #2 pick in 2020? I think it's more likely, Miami trades down in 2019. Adding picks to address position shortcomings and potentially drafting a QB in the mid rounds of the draft, like Easton Stick?
