Have the Dolphins Really Improved this Year?

I don't have any stats to back this up but I'm pretty sure if we just had McKinnie all season we'd have at least 10 wins right now.

If it was true that Tannehill would've been sacked a lot less because of that, then the variable most predictive of wins -- offensive net YPA -- would've likely been enhanced greatly. The sacks are a big reason the team's record isn't better than it is.

We've had two new starters on the left side since the midpoint of the season and a new center for a game, you would think offensive ypa would have gone down, but instead it remained constant (or went up?). My point is if you had him the entirety of the offseason and season those stats would be much improved and we'd be in better shape depth wise and we probably avoid bully-gate.

Take a hint. 99% of the posters here can't stand you. If you want to do analysis for yourself then by all means spare us the unwanted bullcrap that you post. And yes, I saw your lame disclaimer. How come your the only poster in the history of Finheaven that requires a disclaimer? Everybody knows your agenda and is sick and tired of it. Read the responses to your last post. Everyone hates it. I have no doubt that you are intelligent and have a high I.Q. so utilize your Mensa brilliance and get a clue that we don't want to read your voluminous, pointless crapola. If the majority was enjoying your posts that would be different but almost nobody is. I'd enjoy posting with you but first admit that Tannehill is playing winning football and clearly getting better and understand that your longwinded metrics are not appreciated. If you enjoy that type of mental masterbation go for it. Your clogging up our site that we've enjoyed for years. We don't want that junk or your pointless stupid disclaimer. AND WE DON'T NEED 3 YEARS TO JUDGE TANNEHILL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! If you hate Tannehill and the Dolphins go join a Tampa Bay site and leave us alone. We're on to your nasty agenda. Your worse than a troll. I'll give you a tip. Watch the games, record and rewatch the games. Use slow motion to see what players are doing the job and who could be doing much better. This will tell you everything you need to know about if the team is better, not better or whatever. Our record is better now than it was last year. We have a great shot a finishing 10-6 and making the Playoffs. Forget all your stats, this proves were better.

We are a smart well coached team, other than the frequent avoidance of rushing attempts. I hope that is a thing of the past.

Lately our offense is incredibly dangerous, creating spacing everywhere. That aspect has been all but ignored while praise is heaped on Tannehill.

I'm not going to get carried away if the passing numbers aren't ideal. That's true of the Dolphins or any other team.

This year we have cornerbacks who have made plays when they are available, and the key penalties have been next to none, outside the first Patriot game and a stretch in the Ravens game. Overall we certainly can't complain about the officiating, given our low penalty numbers.

Nothing is 100% true to the numbers, as shouright has pointed out countless times. But if we want to make the jump forward that so many will no doubt be comfortable applying toward 2014, our passing attack has to improve considerably without sacrificing anything on the defensive end. I'm never happy relying on interceptions, given how that category can change on a dime.

An 8.1 quarterback provides margin of error that a 7.1 quarterback can't begin to threaten.

I just have to give them credit for finding ways to win, or not lose, in the final plays of the game. Its been so damn close all year, you only hope it builds confidence but we've lost our fair share as well. Keep it rolling because if we make the playoffs or not, im sure we will make these last 2 harder than they should be.

With the benefit of hindsight its unreal how easy our schedule has been, we caught almost every break possible and could have easily won 12 games. Almost every team we played were either rebuilding or injury riddled, with the exception of the Saints and Colts and we managed to win the important game of those two. Can't count on that every year.

Plus, I would add people were doing a lot of bitching about the Pats getting a break in the early part of the schedule, well we get to play the Bills and Jets while controlling our own destiny. Doesn't get much better than that.

Personally, I enjoy most of Shouright's threads. His stuff is interesting and most of it I would not know how to find myself. I dont have to agree with what the statistics suggest to find them interesting to examine. I think a large part of the issue is most of the people who have a problem with his posts simply do not understand the math involved or how to interpret it. I would enjoy the threads more if people simply discussed the information instead of getting frustrated and bashing the poster.

straight up - dude is boring us

Shouright - have you taken the Myers Briggs? You must be an ESTP ... not a dig. It takes all types. :)

Thanks Kev!!! I do understand all of it I just think you get much more out of watching the games! I one of those nuts that watches then over and over. How can metrics tell us more? Just not a fan.

Curious why you don't compare Points Per Drive (for and against) and make your comparison with that information? That's a much clearer reflection of how the entire team is functioning. Labeling this as "Have the Dolphins Really Improved this Year" than trying to sell that an individual stat (YPA) is the stat most closely associated with winning is questionable. YPA can be associated with a QBs performance but it is subjective and prone to confirmation bias.

EDIT: Though the below information is subjective I think it gives a clearer picture of what your eyes are telling you.

Points Per Drive Offense:

2012 - 1.51
2013 - 1.78

Points Per Drive Defense:

2012 - 1.62
2013 - 1.75
