Hayden Fox Assessment: W17

Hayden, enjoyed your assessments this year! Thanks for doing them...…….

... but disagree regarding Beth Mowins.

When the game started I thought "ah, they have the F team announcing this". I thought she did fine with what they had to work with, no complaints about it.

Otherwise, I agree with Hayden regarding Josh Allen but disagree regarding Beth Mowins.

She is perfectly fine as play by play broadcaster. It is misogyny in action. Nothing else. I actually saw that demonstrated on a college football site several years ago on Rivals.com. Someone quoted a broadcaster from that day, with numerous comments made during the game. It was an obscure game than not many people saw. Posters were agreeing with all the comments, and some were saying how astute they were. The OP remained completely silent. But finally another poster jumped in. He said he recognized those comments. They were all from Beth Mowins.

Suddenly the OP returned and was saying he made the thread for exactly that reason. He said he had noted for years that Mowins would say things that people on the board agreed with, and often Mowins was emphasizing them before they became consensus. Yet when Mowins herself was the topic, it was nothing but negativity and animosity.

Talk about adjustments. This one is worthy of a response a week later.

First, a play-by-play announcer is paid to speak, almost continually, for around 3 hours during a football game. Over the course of that time, one is bound to say something astute, even if they don’t really know what they are talking about. It is the sheer volume of words coming out of their mouths, and into the broadcast, that makes it nearly impossible for them to misspeak, or state an observation that is off the mark, one hundred percent of the time they are talking.

Take any standard “tape guy,” for example. A tape guy will make thousands of posts while in a state of complete cluelessness. Yet, any tape guy will occasionally stumble upon a correct assessment. This does not make any of the tape guys knowledgeable or a valuable resource. Because they will still wind up proclaiming solid play from Tannehill, while posting from Adjusterville.

Second, it is also important to note that most of the comments from play-by-play announcers, excluding descriptions of the action, are not their own thoughts. Most of the facts that play-by-play announcers deliver during the game, are either given to them on a sheet before the game begins, or are told to them in their headsets during the game. It is rare that a play-by-play announcer will offer any analysis of the action.

Therefore, what happened on that forum, was a flawed experiment. Your guy cherry picking statements from Beth Mowins, and posters blindly agreeing that they were astute observations, only to find out she made them, does not mean she is a good play-by-play announcer. It is textbook adjusting.

How is that different from any Tannehill adjuster pointing out that he went 12-4 as a starter, over some 16-game stretch, albeit not an entire season? Or proclaiming Tannehill is a quality QB because his passer rating was 11th in the NFL? Why not tell the whole story? Why not post an entire transcript of a game, removing the names of the broadcasters, and compare them?

Because, without adjusting, one must face the reality that Beth Mowins is a terrible play-by-play announcer, who does not deserve to keep her position in a football broadcast booth. It is easier to hide reality behind “isms,” “phobias,” and “ists,” all of which are adjustments in and of themselves.

The truth is, few people care whether Beth Mowins got her current job based largely on her sex or not. If Beth Mowins were good at broadcasting football games, most people would also be glad that she was granted the opportunity, even if they were told it was because of her sex. The problem most people have, is they suspect that she continues to be employed as a football play-by-play broadcaster, based on her sex. Because Beth Mowins is not good at broadcasting football games. There are likely hundreds of people, not men, people, who would love to have that opportunity. Yet, Beth Mowins continues to claim a position in the booth, despite clearly not being competent. One simply needs to have watched enough broadcasts in their life, then listen to a Mowins broadcast, to know this to be true.

The most important jobs of the play-by-play announcer do not include analysis. They are to describe the action accurately, create seamless and fluid transitions to the other members of the crew and to breaks, bring a pleasant sound to the viewing experience, and to offer accurate information that is relevant to the game. Mowins fails miserably at all of this. She consistently mispronounces the names of players, is unpleasant to listen to, often bumbles the game situations, and misinterprets the action on a regular basis. People who have watched enough of the games she has broadcast know all of this to be true. Even the mayor of Adjusterville couldn’t convince them otherwise.

This is my 2nd go around with her and I thought she was terrible. Furthermore, if she was one of the Amazon Prime all female broadcast from earlier this year then that makes it even more awful, as that was the all-time worst broadcast ever IMO.
