Hayden Fox's Assessment: Preseason Week Three

We may not be better with out Marshall, but we CERTAINLY aren't worse.

We keep giving McNutt opportunities. The staff must really like him. I wonder if he's got some intangibles going for him, like great coffee-bringing skills. My guess is we're also going to the waiver wire for a #5 WR, however. Since Bumphis seems all but ruled out, I hope it's Tymes if we keep one in-house

Tyms has over came such long odds as was pointed out in the broadcast. I would put my money on him. He has quickness and speed...plus toughness.
I would find a way to keep 3 rookies...Bumpus, Tyms, and Mcnutt. Matthews has not done much this preseason, I think he is the odd man out.

Matthews isn't going anywhere lol.. The odd man out is obviously McNutt. We either keep Bumphis who can play Wr and ST or Tyms who would just come in as relief once in a while.

Bumphis would be my guess.

I just do not see Mathews not making it he has made the most of the opportunities IMO. McNutt might make it because his college coach is our WR coach. Bumpus I like a lot but they got rid of Devon Bess because of many of the intangibles that Bumpus processes. I have noticed his playing time as a WR has been cut down so I believe they intend to hide him on the PT. Tyms upside and his speed factor is huge especailly if we loose a guy like Wallace for some reason so their should be some thinking of keeping him around for that reason but he is raw. Ideally it would be nice to be able to keep both Tyms and Bumpus on the PT and have Mathews and McNutt on the team as the latter 2 cannot be stashed. Based on past performance/ production I would keep Bumpus and Mathews on the 53 and Tyms on the PT. McNutt has not been that impressive to me. If you had a injury to Gibson Bumpus could fill that role plus he is a punt returner too like Bess. Mathews could possibly place Gipbson less the punt return ability. We loose Wallace then we loose the ability to spread the field so keeping Tyms around would help in that catagory. After writing all this out I say Mathews and Tyms on the 53 and Bumpkis on the PT though I bet it ends up with McNutt and Mathews on the 53 and they will gamble on the PT with Tyms and Bumpkis.

What has Matthews done this preseason? I understand he made the team last year, but I have watched all the games and apart from catching the ball, he has poor YAC. I envision him as a red zone target, and there is the possibility that Shermin is keeping him under wraps.

But.. But.. But, I thought DT was clearly winning with starting RB job (according to those who have no idea what they're taking about)..

I really don't see how we don't pick up a real starting TE either via cuts or trade

Yes at this point I concede that DT just does not have the needed vision out of the backfield and he runs to upright but he does pass protect well and catches the ball out of the backfield decent. That's how they should use him too with a few run sprinkled in here and there just to keep the defense off balance. This can still be very effective and basically it was the same role that all running backs served durning the Marino years, pass protectors and glorified pass catches out of the backfield which will work. I thought the rookie RB from Florida Gillisee last night and he could back up Miller from a injury perspective. Gray needs time on PT to work off the rust to see what we have later.

To be fair he has been hurt and I have only seen really one dropped ball last night based on his opportunities. I believe you do have to take in account his contributions last years when the lights came on too where with the other 3 guys you are guessing.

I disagree. Nolan Carroll is a bad corner

Not according based on stats according to CK.

I want to call out other posters who when someone suggested another player from around the league to serve in Keller's spot, they simply replied, "nope, all he is a Charles Clay". Charles Clay is a non-factor folks and some of the candidates being suggested are a stark upgrade over him.

Clay has fooled me so many times. I grow sour and then get sucked back in...not this time.

---------- Post added at 06:07 AM ---------- Previous post was at 06:06 AM ----------

Plus, remember he is not a pick of this coaching staff.

Clay was just getting in a bit of a grove last year when he went on IR so I believe there is still some upside there. But I agree with you that he is not the answer at this point I would gamble on the Bears pickup Rodriquiz at this point as our starting TE with Dion Sims paired up. Clay would be my 3rd alternative with Egnew holding on by a thread.

PS If we can get Jamar Taylor healthy then it will not be an issue "if".

PS. I agree, but he has missed so much time he is a non-factor through September. It is Carroll or Davis right now.

They are the same, just one is cheaper. Did you see Marshalls play last year, just awful.

Yeah, I saw every snap last year. I cannot get over the Bills game in Buffalo last year where Carroll was flagged play after play. Marshall did not play well last year, but was nowhere near as lousy as Carroll. How much did Marshall's balky back hurt his play last year.

Look, I said from the start that one of the vet CB's would get cut, but I also stated I do not think it makes the team better.

Shiancoe came available. Let's keep a list.

While I think Shiancoe is shot, Ramon Harewood interests me from Baltimore. Started some at LG for the Ravens last year. Not sure of his fit, but it is an interesting cut. He will find work.

I disagree. He has missed time...but he played essentially the entire second half last night. And he will probably play the majority of the game next week. Small sample size but he looked impressive last night. From a mental standpoint I dont know where he is at as far as the playbook...but you would assume he has been keeping up with mental reps. My guess is that he will be playing week 1 or 2...and eventually take more and more reps from Carroll.
