Hayden Fox's Preseason Week One Assessment

Did it seem like Tanny held the ball a beat too long on a couple of throws? He zinged it to Miller on at least one of them... I didn't get to replay and maybe it was a coverage issue. I was excited they got the first drive in with some authority. Ditto on the lb crew and after lobato came in it was three and out almost every drive for the rest of the night. It's preseason and we had some positives to take away and some full speed tape on our rookies.

The deflection that Tripp had with his left hand was impressive. Showed a lot of athleticism no matter what team he was going against.
Tripp could be good. He is just learning his role but he impresses as a competitor. Interesting to see that he got plenty of playing time. Because Jordie can play all 3 LB roles, he could be a handy player as the season unfolds.

You are the guy around here that talked about Tripp first last spring. If he makes it and contributes that avatar of yours better change. I will always connect you and Tripp. Nothing bad if he does not make it because he was a late rounder, but if he does you get my draft guru nomination.

Marcus Thigpen will make the team. He is our 6th WR in the slot. He is also our top return guy until someone comes along and unseats him. Wasnt all that impressed with Damien Williams, either one for that matter with the accolades they were getting. Its still early and they could prove me also premature, but last night was there chance and so far, people have not lost their jobs.

Anyone ever suggesting Rishard Matthews would be outside lookin in was just premature. He was in the doghouse for being late to meetings and such. Had nothing to do with his play. He got his tongue lashing and now everything is fine.

Surprised no mention of Will Davis. Liked the agressive play aside from the penalty. Thats exactly what I want from him. I think he is ahead of Taylor. Taylor played well however. Love our depth there. Aikens is our rookie holdoff.

Gillislee is making moves to move up past D Thomas as long as he is out. Alot of people hate Thomas but I think Philbin hasnt written him off. It ends up 1. Miller 2. Moreno 3. Gillislee in the end because he is a decent blocker and is better runner than Thomas. Once again, I think Thigpen does many jobs so anyone writing him off is wrong. We need multiple people who can return kicks. And he did a nice job faking punt reception letting it go into the endzone.

Not worried about RT running the rock. In fact, I think he should take off more often than last year when he doesnt see anything but open space. Its a safe positive play that keeps the defense honest. The run option is simply a great surprise play and its one that can put a nail in the coffin in a game. RT was a WR who was sacked 58 times and was not injured. With this new offense and its wrinkles, its simply one more great play that Lazor will use to great success. And as you can tell from last night, they have other options with it. Imagining you will see more pass out of it too when the DE/LB crashes down on him.

The defense will be fine. The offense will be scoring **** ton more points this year, which in turn helps the defense.

No worries.

You know this how?, by how stellar they were to finish the year last year, by all the amazing pickups on Defense in the offseason, or by the stellar preseason game last night?

Thx Hayden. I'm pretty optimistic that he can make it. Always a good sign when a rookie flashes immediately in the preseason and you just have to listen to him interviewed to tell that he is very high character and loves to play the game. I'd still be surprised if they rush him along, my expectation is mainly Special Teams, but if Wheeler stinks it up, he is one of the options because of his versatility.

I'm still worried about the OL but I do agree with the linebackers. They are terrible, and while our defense wasn't statistically terrible last year any educated football fan who watched the games could tell you that our LB's often hurt and sometimes prevented our team from winning by missing tackles the defense is designed to funnel to him them and by again failing to secure their coverage. Lazor's scheme may have the ability to impact the OL as much as players, but we've got the same scheme and LB's from last year and I don't think anything will change.

I was hoping that Coyle would have been replaced along with Sherman.

To be fari, Coyle's D always seems to keep teams from scoring TD's. I will give him that. They seem to yield rushing yards, miss tackles not get off the field quick enough nor make huge game changing plays…but in the end, they keep the opponent off of the scoreboard.

A somewhat positive that I took away from having a fairly inept Lobato at the helm is all the work our defensive received. I am encouraged by the likes of McCain, Tripp, Fede, and Anthony Johnson (to name a few) and am glad they got extended playing time. These guys are raw, so I hope the extra playing time will help them develop more quickly. We need the depth.

I think defenders need to watch tape on Michael Thomas to learn the fundamentals of tackling. If he can clean up his coverages he will be a star. Most fundamentally sound tackler I have seen in a long time.

Though its way to soon to grade this rookie class my initial impression is Hickey put together a solid group. Landry is the steal of the draft. Refreshing to see us not waste early picks.

Phillip Wheeler has gotten no better. He needs to get cut.

and thanks to Reshad Jones, he will def get more play.

One interesting thing I saw this morning: Apparently, a number of our players had the flu in last night's game. Koa Misi was asked about it, admitted that he was ill, and then said it was no excuse.

I buy it. I noticed he was huffing and puffing and looked absolutely winded after five plays. I figured he was just not in game shape. Maybe not.

IMO move Jordan Tripp to MLB, just put him in, start him. Move Misi back to his old spot. Cut Ellerbe. Move on.

I don't think that group would be any worse, but there's definitely a chance it could be better. At the very worst, I think it will be better once Tripp gets more experience.

McCain looks nice. Very intriguing player. He's got a pretty sweet burst to him and can explode to the ball carrier. Did a good job rushing the QB as well. I like him a lot.
