Positives
* Ryan Tannehill showed a lot of mental toughness after a very poor 1st Half. He made some excellent throws in the 2nd Half. He ran for a long of 40 yards on a read option. He tossed two TD's to help get his team the lead. Finally, he got out of pressure a few times and made some plays under duress.
* Tannehill had 49 yards on 3 carries.
* Lamar Miller ran with a purpose in the 2nd Half. He finished with 53 yards with most coming in the 2nd Half. He also had a big catch to keep the drive alive in which Miami went ahead for the first time in the game. He finished the catch and run by lowering his shoulder on knocking the helmet off of Clinton Dix.
* The pass protection was good in giving up one sack…that one sack Branden Albert got knicked on. RT got out of some messes as well.
* Jarvis Landry had 71 yards on 5 catches and 1 TD.
* Mike Wallace 67 yards on 5 catches and 1 TD.
* The offense was 3 of 4 in the Red Zone.
* The run design in the second half. The zone reads opened up after RT kept the ball a few times.
* The run defense was stout. They held Eddie Lacy to 40 yards on 14 carries (2.9 per rush). Overall, the Pack ran for just 3.6 per carry. If you took away, Aaron Rodgers scrambles, Green Bay had just 87 yards.
* The defense kept GB to 5.5 yards per pass play. They did not give up big plays today.
* Cameron Wake was a beast today. He had a sack and a half, 1 TFL and forced an intentional grounding. He kept coming and coming and was Miami's best player today.
* Olivier Vernon did his part at DE. He 1.5 sacks and 2 TFL. He played the run well setting the edge consistently.
* Jared Odrick had a big stop on a 3rd and short in the 2nd half. He also swatted a pass down in the Red Zone.
* Koa Misi's return to the lineup was strong. He had 9 tackles with 8 of them of the solo variety. He had 1 QB hit.
* Reshad Jones was solid in his first work of the season. 9 TOT, 9 Solo and 1 PD that he almost intercepted.
* Landry had two nice returns and made smart decisions returning punts.
* Jonathan Freeney blocked punt.
* Caleb Sturgis banged through 48 harder for the team's first points.
Negatives
* Joe Philbin taking two timeouts on the final, game winning GB drive. It is a practice he has used in the past and often backfires. While his team might have been tired, the Packers were on the ropes. The TO's allowed the Packers to re-group and eventually score.
* If the TO's were to set up a final defensive strategy, having Phillip Wheeler one on one with an athletic TE is just awful coaching.
* The defense played awful situational football. On Rodgers fake spike play, most of the players stopped. However, the most frustrating part of the play was all Cortland Finnegan had to do was tackle the Packers receiver in bounds or even herd him back to his support toward the middle of the field. If he does, the game is over and the fake spike attempt by Rodgers would have looked foolish. Instead, it was a successful play because Finnegan pushed him out of bounds. Mind numbing play by an experienced veteran.
* Miami was down 10-3 and it was 4th and Goal. Joe Philbin went for it and a run (third such try) up the middle was stuffed. The team needed points and not necessarily TD's today. Miami needed points on a day in which the defense played well and the Packers eventually wilted in the heat. It was a reckless decision on Philbin's part.
* Another slow start for Joe Philbin's team. Miami gave up a TD on the opening drive and it took 2 full quarters for the offense to start producing.
* With about 30 seconds left in the First Half, Miami had a choice of a long FG attempt, to go for a 4th and 3 or punt. Philbin punted taking away a possible scoring opportunity.
* The offense had a chance to put the game away with a 4 minute drill. If they came up with one more 1st down, the game might have been iced. Instead they went pass, pass, run and punt. Joe Philbin inexplicability stated the goal was to get a first down on that last set of downs, but that does not explain the run on 3rd and 9. Simply poor decision making, planning and execution.
* Tannehill was awful in the First Half. He had two interceptions…both were forced. After the blocked punt, Miami was 3rd and goal and went to pass. RT went to Brian Hartline and missed him by throwing behind him. The issue was not just the ball location, but also Charles Clay was wide open in the flat for six.
* RT tried hard counts in the 2nd Half only to pull his own tackles offsides.
* The offense was set up by the special teams on two short fields and came away with three points on the first two possessions.
* Not accepting the ball after winning the coin flip. Green Bay proceeds to go down the field and score a TD.
* 0-3 Turnover Differential.
* The offense was only 4 of 10 on 3rd down.
* Allowed TD's 3 of 5 Green Bay trips to the Red Zone.
* The defense allowed 8 of 17 on 3rd down.
* Rodgers picked up a 3rd and 8 on the opening drive with a draw. It kept the drive alive in which they scored a TD.
* Lost Time of Possession 37:12 to 22:28.
* Mike Wallace's drop at the end of the First Half in the 2 minute. It was an accurate throw and could have gone for big yards.
* Cortland Finnegan was awful. Missed tackles, 2 holding penalties, gave up catches and of course the blunder in the second to last play of the game.
* Reshad Jones lost his jock when a scrambling Aaron Rodgers pumped faked him.
Overall Assessment
* What a heartbreaking loss. So many chances to steal this win. From the fumble recovered by the Packers on the last drive, to multiple throws to keep the drives alive, to not being able to maintain offense to nail the game down…it would have been a huge win, but Miami came up with nothing.
* Today, the defense played really well despite some short comings. They had no support from the offense for much of the game and were put into some tough spots against a great offense. They matched Green Bay much of the time, but in the end there was too much asked of this unit.
* Aaron Rodgers is the best QB in football.
* Without the offense playing more consistently and finding scoring opportunities versus quality opponents, Miami will never get over the hump. It is time to step up be accounted for.
* I am happy with the resiliency that Ryan Tannehill showed. He was abysmal in the First Half, but he kept a stiff upper lip and kept plugging away. It was not a perfect day by any stretch and with better play in the beginning of the game, the Fins might win. With that said, he showed some mental toughness by helping his team get back in the game.
* I saw many holds on Green Bay linemen trying to slow down Miami pass rushers. but never was there a holding call.
* It must be stated that Joe Philbin was brought to Miami to fix the offense. What exactly has he accomplished in his two plus years with that side of the ball?
* The coaching staff had two weeks to prepare for this game and while the defense and special teams played spirited, the offense laid an egg for two quarters. One would think the team would have had some wrinkles and figured out how to have some success through self-scouting and the extra time to prepare.
* Why does this team start so slow? At this point, I put the blame at the feet of the head coach.
* While we talk about the slow starts of Philbin's teams, we must remember his charges do not finish typically. Today, was another example.
* Today, was a non conference loss. True, it was a home game, but it was a NFC game. Things are okay in that regard.
* Lots of football is left to play. I do think Miami loses next week in Chicago (sorry guys), but comes back to beat Jacksonville in a close game and beats the Chargers the week after. If this occurs, Miami would 4-4 and at worst two behind New England in the loss column. My point is there is still a lot of action left in this NFL season and Miami still has everything in front of them despite what happened today and some of the ugly trends of this team.
