Right. it's not that easy!!
Like I said, we are not talking about Manning or Brady. If we were talking about Aaron Rodgers I could understand if we took Long over him. These guys are bringing up Matt Ryan. The guy who maybe 5 people on this board said to draft. He has turned out to be a solid QB for sure. Franchise? Hardly
Next season. If we were to take Long over Luck I once again would understand.
But not for Ryan.
I wonder how happy they would have been if we ended up drafting Brady Quinn who many more on this board clamoured for. He was a better prospect. by many, coming out over Ryan.
You have lost your mind my friend...
Brady Quinn was never a legitimate franchise quarterback prospect... he padded his stats against the Service Academies. He was too bulky, stiff, and robotic due to his upper body being over developed, and lacked accuracy. I tried to tell everyone that Miami needed to stay away from Brady Quinn... In other words, I was in the 5%.
I told 'em that Miami needed to draft Patrick Willis instead because he'd beat out Crowder and/or old, slow, concussed Zach Thomas "with one arm tied behind his back".. my exact words.
Matt Ryan is absolutely a franchise quarterback... which is why Atlanta chose to build around him. Ozzie Newsome knew it too.... which is why he tried to trade up for Matt Ryan and select him #2 overall ahead of Atlanta when Miami passed on him for Jake Long...
The reality is, even Andrew Luck has a 25% chance of ever becoming as good of an NFL quarterback as Matt Ryan is. As "safe" of a QB prospect as Luck is considered to be by the talking heads, he's no safer than Matt Ryan was. Luck has more talent around him than Matt Ryan EVER had at BC... Ryan also faced much better defenses on a regular basis than Andrew Luck has.
Again, you don't build around a left tackle when you have the #1 pick in the draft and you need a quarterback.... I knew Matt Ryan was going to succeed. I knew it. I knew he would.
What you people don't realize is that a franchise caliber quarterback, a quarterback like Matt Ryan... can affect the game WITHOUT even being on the field. Quarterbacks like Matt Ryan can affect the opposing head coaches decision while he's standing on the sidelines, and force errors in judgment. You need to look no further than Sean Payton going for it on 4th down with a lead in order to keep the ball away from Matt Ryan... because he knew Matt Ryan would drive the ball down the field for the winning score if he punted...
...the same way a quarterback like Peyton Manning forced Bill Belicheck to make an error in judgement and go for it on 4th and 1 because he's so afraid of him... Think you'll see any coaches going for it because they don't want to see Jake Long on the field? Maybe Sparano....he'll kick a field goal to keep Jake off the field, but that's about it....
As for your original post, you're way off on Green Bay's offensive line. In fact, it was the weak link on the team. Did you even watch the Green Bay/Atlanta playoff game?
The Falcons defense had a dozen clean shots at Rodgers in the backfield for sacks... the pressure was getting through. So much so, that they had John Abraham lined up at nose tackle in several instances instead of rushing him off the edge. However, Rodgers made the plays HIMSELF... not his offensive line. He's the one that left defenders grasping at air...
Eli Manning won the superbowl with a 5th round pick playing left tackle... defense is an entirely different issue than offensive line.
Miami and Cleveland are in the same boat... they have the most irrelevant pro bowl left tackles in the history of the NFL... good luck with that.
