The Dolphins’ decisive playoff loss on Sunday reinforced what the team’s decision-makers already knew: They must augment the front seven on defense and bolster an offensive line that couldn’t generate nearly enough push against Pittsburgh.

Unless the Dolphins move on from Branden Albert — who’s under contract for 2017 and who’s valued internally - the offensive line changes might be limited to procuring a new right guard to replace free agent Jermon Bushrod.

Solving the defensive front seven issues will be more complicated. The Dolphins want to keep Ndamukong Suh and Cam Wake and restricted free agent linebacker Kiko Alonso, but most everything else is in question.

The good news: The Dolphins have the resources necessary to strengthen the roster.

The Dolphins have $137.5 million committed for 2017 cap purposes, with the cap expected to rise from $155 million to the $165 million range.

Factoring in $8.4 million in carryover space (according to NFL players union figures), the Dolphins will have $36 million in space.

Two expected moves - cutting Mario Williams and Koa Misi — will save another $8.5 million and $4.2 million respectively, pushing cap space to nearly $49 million. Cutting Dion Jordan ($3.2 million savings) brings the total to $52 million.

Releasing Earl Mitchell would save another $4 million, bringing the total to $56 million. If the Dolphins cut left tackle Branden Albert, which would be a surprise, that would add another $7.2 million.

That's a lot of money, re-sign Alonso, Sims, stills and branch. Extend jones and Landry. Sign a LB and Guard in free agency and then use the draft to fill in the rest

I'd be okay with this. I would likely sign 1 or 2 more free agents than that as long as they were fair contracts though

Do we have a real shot of getting a 5th for Matthews?

We'll need more then just 1 LB and 1 Guard in free agency. Need to add more veteran talent than that.

I don't care if we do cut Albert. We need to move Tunsil to left tackle and Albert is injured all the damn time anyway.

If there was ever a year to trade down and pickup multiple draft picks this is the year. We have to bring in as many bodies as possible (draft wisely) and hope to hit on at least five players. Way to many holes to hope that a player here or there is going to make the difference. Gase please contact Jimmy Johnson and ask him for a little help with this.

Did somebody say picks and money?

The Herald saying,"expected to add multiple draft picks " is an amazing bit of fruition"

That might be the silliest headline I've seen in a while. "Expecting to add multiple draft picks"? You mean as in the ones they currently have? Or like every team in the league?

Was that a mistake that should have said...."Expected to add multiple free agents"? LOL. Gotta love blog journalism.

Might be a reference to compensatory picks.

What always kills me is how the fans generally see exactly what's needed(LB, G, DL, etc) and the Dolphins go add something completely not on the list of priorities.
Hopefully this offseason will be following the blue print we all know they need to follow. Oh, and get it right at the same time.

You mean like 2016 when they traded 3 draft picks to add a receiver in the draft when we already had Stills, Parker and Landry? Good thing our new front office isn't like that. :err:

What's on the agenda this year? Spend a first round pick on a safety?
