Here is drive Chart in 2nd half on Sunday....You decide for yourself

Yeah and even if they could have gotten anything the backs were both playing like **** themselves. Like that play they highlighted where Thomas had a huge hole but instead of taking it he cut back and ran right into the blockers. Sherman must be thinking wtf is this ****, I had a more talented players at A&M.

I didn't think that was a huge hole...one of those lbs was flowing right over to it...d Thomas has almost done about as much as he could...kuechly sniffed out every run play in the hole or just as the Los we had like a real boss lb does when he's clean...

We don't get that ever from the lb position...we lost yardage also on freaking false starts by the guards and tackles over and over and we can't run the ball...we can never run the damn ball...which means all those bootleg pas that you'd like to run off wide stretch action but can't cause the de doesn't respect it on any other down but first and long are out of the play book...

This teams inability to run kills the o more than any missed throw by the qb

Pretty ironic that the only time Lamar miller runs thru contact is when he's going backwards...yeesh

Any focus on the reasons for this loss in my opinion has to revolve around the number of first downs the team had in the game. That number was 13, which if extrapolated to the season as a per game average, would place the Dolphins well beyond last in the league right now, even much worse than lowly Jacksonville.

As Awsi Dooger said above, I suspect that's associated with a poor commitment to the run game, which creates a predictable, one-dimensional, more easily defensible offense.

Tell me how many first downs did San Fran have against that panther d the week prior...everyone's gonna be below the league average playing against that defense...at least during that win streak...they are top level defense for a reason...

You can run into stacked boxes all you want against them you will get nowhere with our oline talent and play against that front and that mike backer

I don't agree. This was a complete team loss...just like we have team wins this one was a team loss. There are a lot of things I can point to as reasons we lost...a lot of little things that add up. The dropped pass by Matthews in the end zone (yes he got popped illegally and the flag got picked up but if he holds on we have 4 more points), the FG by the Panthers at the end of the half (Coyle took responsibility for the call), the defense giving up an 80-yard drive to start the 2nd half, the slightly underthrown ball to Wallace in the first half (he caught it but obviously if Tannehill hits him in stride its another 6 points right there...I will say, while everyone is hating on Tannehill, I saw marked improvement in this game on the deep ball...Wallace had to slow up but in games prior Wallace was having to come to a near dead stop to wait on the ball...it's getting better but people are too blinded by their hate to see it), the ultra conservative play calling in the second half with the short passing game, Lamar Miller running backwards and losing mega yardage killing drives, the kicker thinking he was punting and trying to make his FG attempt go out-of-bounds at the 1-yard line, the inability of any of our players, WR, TE or RB to break a tackle and make a freakin play, the defense giving up 4th and 10 at the Panthers 20-yard line...do you know how big a stop that would have been?...the inability to bring Cam Newton down on at least 3 different occasions when he should have been sacked for a huge loss.

I see plenty of blame to go around...so you can blame it largely on Tannehill like you want but I guess I was watching a different game.

Excellent post on the details of the game, and plenty of blame to go around, felt all the frustration all over again. If you forced me to pick a side I would say the offense overall was more responsible for the loss..Is it just me or is this the most frustrating of seasons? It ranks up there with the 1-15 season for me.

Offense was definitely more responsible for the loss, however in fairness we did play the #1 defense in the NFL and exceeded their average points allowed. I'm not saying that's good, but I honestly thought our passing game showed some progress in some respects on Sunday. 16 points with a missed field goal against the Panthers defense is honestly a better performance than 20 points against the awful Chargers defense or the terrible performance we had against the Bucs before that.

That would be a method used to replace a run game. The Dolphins didn't invent doing this it's common and generally an accepted form of offense when you have no running game.

Yep short passing game used to offset the lack of running and get the ball out of the qbs hand quickly with 3 step drops and catch and fire

I agree, we were able to move the ball better than I thought against that defense especially with the OL situation. However in the fourth qtr. felt the defense really gave us the chance to close the game a couple times. When the Clay catch got reversed, in particular, I thought that was enough to propel the offense to just pick up a couple more first downs..wasn't to be however.

Except, the Dolphins have a running game, as evidenced by the fact that its yards per carry is at the league average.

What the Dolphins don't have, by contrast, is a commitment to the running game, as evidenced by its percentage of total plays accounted for by the running game that places it 3rd-worst in the league, at the 8th percentile.

The Dolphins were not just "below average" against Carolina. They were well below the worst offense in the league with regard to first downs on the basis of how the number of them would translate to a per game average.

The Panthers have surrendered fewer first downs in a game this year three other times, and the teams they played against in those instances scored zero, 10, and 9 points, even fewer than the 16 the Dolphins scored.

They have a good defense, sure, but you can't let them one-dimensionalize you in terms of the run game. At that point they have you by the balls. You have to continue to strive for balance, especially when you have a second-half lead and need ball control and a running clock.

Once again, rushing attempts are correlated with wins, not rushing success.

You make a good point, but unfortunately it doesn't work that way, otherwise we'd be guaranteed to beat all the teams who don't have top defenses. You have to win the games you get an advantage in. Panthers were without their starting DE, and their defense didn't create any turnovers other than the one INT which resulted in nothing. Also, their offense started out badly, with Newton affected by that hit. So we had them on the ropes. We should have scored more points, because the opportunities were there in the first half.

Oh ok so going 3 and out over and over by running the ball repeatedly into that front Is a good recipe to win...being that running attempts are more correlated with winning than rushing success...

That sounds ass backwards to me...you have to have success to control the time of possession and chew up clock...

How many 2nd and 10s or 12 does anyone think this team can overcome???

Was just thinking the same thing hoops. At least when we were throwing it wasnt 3 rushes for 3 yards and a punt.
Our only chance at chewing some clock was throwing. To run into that defense would have absolutely worked against us, and given the panther offense even more time to claw back into it.

This thought we needed to stick to running for a yard or two at a time...is ridiculous frankky.

Well you have to run the ball to keep em honest but if Carolina keeps showing you 8 in the box and you know physically you cannot match them in even or negative number scenarios you got to check to something else

But yeah if you want to go 3 and out a lot run Into those stacked boxes over and over...the only way this team moved the ball was the pass and the qbs legs
