Hickey and Ole Jeffy Boy

The best move Ireland made while here for him was signing Matt Moore. That move kept him on the job for a few more years. Unfortunately for us that move probably cost us Andrew Luck and stuck us with Ireland for a few more aggravating years.

If your commanding officers tell you to do a mission that you think is wrong, and they can't be reasoned with, are you a weak individual if you still follow their orders? There is a power structure in our organization, just like there is one in the military. There will be disputes, that is a given, which is why ONE MAN has the power of final say, so that these disputes don't drag on for days/weeks/years.

If you believe the coaches believed Martin was going to work out just fine then how do you explain the fact that we pursued, and offered Jake Long a contract at all. Or the attempted trade for Albert. Clearly that is evidence that SOMEBODY in the organization was unhappy with the LT position. And I'm pretty sure that somebody was not the man thats since been fired.

And lastly, only a moron would risk Tannehill's blind side with a suicidal, drug abusing quitter. That is information Ireland and Philbin had at the time. For your theory to be correct BOTH Ireland and Philbin have have to be morons on an equal level. The odds of having two morons in complete agreement that they should trust a quitter to protect a raw QB's blindside, with no backup plan, would have to be astronomical. If only one of them is a moron it can't be Philbin, because Ireland still had the power to get a LT in here. If only Ireland is the moron then things play out exactly like they played out.

please don't compare being a coach in the NFL to being in the army. If I disobey an order in the army I can be put in jail and brought up on charges. Philbin is free to quit or make a stand anytime. I don't believe for one minute that Jeff Ireland made the decision that Martin would be our LT without input from the coaches, that makes not one bit of sense.Ireland is not so brilliant that he can think he knows football better than the coaches.

Irleland was a bad gm but people are stretching way too much to think that Ireland made the decision that MArtin should be the LT, its a conveinient argument though.

If the coaches were happy with Martin explain why we offered Jake Long a contract and offered to make a deal with the Chiefs for Albert.

And will you guys stop it with this ridiculous notion that quitting was a viable option for Philbin. He took the job knowing Ireland, not him, had final say. If you're planning on just quitting whenever you don't get your way then you effectively have final say. He agreed to the power structure when he took the job now he has to be a man and live with it. Though I do believe if Ireland wasn't fired Philbin would have quit.

Ireland is the only Dolphin GM to ever hit on all his first round draft picks. Every one of his first rounds picks have been a success in the NFL. Sure the 2nd and 3rd rounds were disappointments. Free agent pickups like Grimes, Wake, Bush, Dansby and Starks were major hits along with college free agents Bess and Carpenter. Since Shula left churn is the best word to describe the Dolphin rosters and look no further to any magazine of past rosters and you will see the majority of guys drafted into the NFL from another team on the Dolphins roster before Ireland came on board. That being said there are definitly holes on the Dolphins roster at OL, LB and RB that Ireland left behind and with one preseason game behind us perhaps the OL is looking better. Philbin and Hickey at the beginning of this season both looked like dead men standing in the NFL "Not For Long" but Hickey's draft could save both their jobs and is showing some promise. The huge issue currently appears to be the same we had during the Marino years which was we could not run or stop the run. Meaning the defense is left on the field for the majority of the game and even with a QB like Marino a combination like that does not work long term in the NFL. So lets hope Tripp can step up at Mike and Miller or Moreno can carry the rock between the tackles this year.

Its not ridiculolus decisions like moving rt to lt are not made by gms

Not to criticize anyone who does, but I can't bother to analyze a GM's picks until we find one that can deliver more than 8 wins, because it's just not good enough no matter how we twist it.

Here's hoping I can be bothered to one day look back at Hickey's moves.

All of the top GMs have a resume filled with questionable choices. What the "winners" also have in common is that they acquired a very talented quarterback. Ireland I think did that. He brought in a bunch of very good players through various means and was able to get something for a few of our head cases that were cancerous to our team. He did that while correcting our cap at the same time. He is gone and we need to look forward, not backwards. I appreciate all the players we have now that are very talented that he is responsible for. The ones that are mistakes will soon be gone. As far as Pat White is concerned, the guy gave up on football. He was brought in to run a specific offense, just as Daniel Thomas was and the coaches chose to not use the players that way. Ireland can control neither of those things.

And what makes you think any of those scenarios leads to a better result than 8-8? Keeping 2 or 3 TEs and a RB in to block on every down is a handcuff. Playing Dallas Thomas just to prove a point is a handcuff. Jonathan Martin was the best LT on the team. That doesn't mean he was any good. Or that Joe Philbin was happy with the situation. Your job is to try to put you team in the best situation to make the playoffs, even if that means taking a gamble on ratfink.
When I read your post, all I see are excuses dude. :deadhorse:

Whoaaaaaaa!

Jake Long played a couple years at a high level and then fell off greatly due to injury, and various reasons. Quickly becoming next Tony Boselli Jr!

Vontea Davis never lived up to his draft status here or in Indy. For every great play he makes, he has 2 WTF moments that extend other teams drives, or gives up a TD.

Jared Odrick is middle of the line average nothing more!

Mike Pouncey is no where near as good as people on here make him out to be. He was over drafted, and because of that gets more attention then his head bobbing play warrants. Lets not get into his off the field issues.

Ryan Tannehill might actually become a franchise qb, but I will credit Philbin and Sherman more then Ireland for drafting him. A new HC always gets his QB and Sherman was his college coach.

Dion Jordan is a nightmare! His is exhibit A of a idiot GM that drafts by matrix and not needs! He traded up and gave away picks for a player that had no place in our defensive system. It is the very pinnacle of it's my way I know best Jeff Ireland!

Add all those together and that is why we have suffered 5 years of mediocrity under him! He wasn't great with the cap either! Our cap space was a function of FA bust being cut, high draft picks not being resigned, and no franchise qb contract.

It baffles me that a "actual" Dolphin fan can defend that ****head and claim he did anything well!

If we can't hash out who was responsible for what roster moves how can we possibly have a discussion comparing Hickey and Ireland? Is it fair that Philbin gets the blame for Ratfink Martin but doesn't get the credit for Albert, or Landry?

A lot of you sound like jilted women. Move on.

I believe the bad was a group decision just as the good - they should all share blame and credit. With that said, I will say this ... I like what I've seen from Philbin so far this year. I believe he is making a tremendous effort to become a leader, and that's a good thing.

Well I guess you have your opinion and I respect that.

Jake Long is a pro bowl starter currently whose career is blimished by injuries which I find hard for a fan to blame Ireland for, Vonte Davis a current starter for the Colts and ranked as one of the top cornerbacks in the NFL by Lindys pro football magazine, Jared Odrick is another NFL starter again ranked by Lindys as one better NFL defensive tackles, Mike Pouncy another NFL starter again ranked highly by Lindy's as one of the better centers, Ryan Tannahill another NFL starter while not ranked by Lindy's like the other first round picks chosen by Ireland but some fans on this site have been pretty hopeful about the guy which takes us to Dion Jordan chosen last year by Ireland in the first round. The story goes on the Jordan pick that while Ross was having dinner last year the night before the draft with the Dolphins coaching staff which player would they take in the entire draft if they had the opportunity and the concensus was Dion Jordan. Thats the coaches, coaching your team this year that came to that decision fills you full of confidence does't it? Yea fact Ireland as the GM should know when the his coaches are making boneheaded decisions about players on their team thats his job and he failed telling Plilbin and his staff that they were wrong on Jordan. What the Dolphins gave up to aquire Jordan last year for the 3rd overall pick was a great value based on the picks they traded away. That trade value was Irelands but I will point out that Jordan the player is currently being used at a position he did not play at in college plus his talents fits the 4/3 not the 3/4 defensive front that we currently use. But hey Philbin and his staff really wanted Jordan and hopefully he works out and does not turn out like most the first round bust picks we had before Irelands arrival.

Let's not forget his first QB miss: taking Chad Henne instead of Joe Flacco or Matt Ryan. Most GM's don't get a second shot to draft a QB after missing on their first try. And it is still debatable that Tannehill was a better pick than Russell Wilson (as the 60+ page thread from a couple of months ago attests). Jeff Ireland cost Dolphin fans six years of their lives.

Bill parcells was here when we drafted Henne. I was speaking soley to the moves made post Tuna.
