Hickey, take a look at what Ozzie did.

Maybe we got it right by investing 2 high draft picks in the O-line. Because Ozzie elected not to draft O-linemen and also lost players, it sounds like he could experience some problems. It would be a crying shame if his $100M QB got injured because of inadequate protection. Sounds like Ozzie has to consider a trade if he is so thin on talent.
Maybe we reached for James, but it sounds like we did a thorough evaluation and determined how he ranked compared to other options. Full marks to Hickey for following his board re a position of need and getting the guys he wanted. He has effectively supported his coach in presenting some options. There may also be some merit in getting an old veteran like Clabo or Winston for added depth and experience in the locker room.

He did get hurt week 16 and I have to think his terrible play week 17 was a result of that injury. Sound familiar?

Thanks for the pragmatic point of view. When there is no RT on the roster (not even a backup) heading into the draft, its always best to not draft one and try to fill the starting RT position with an injured UDFA who is projected to be a backup even when healthy.

I'm not really disagreeing with you Zounds. I too would have preferred that each team fill the vacant spot on the roster before the draft. And, if you re-read my post you will see that I started out by qualifying it as not being an answer for the short term.

I think we can both agree that the abysmal pass protector Shelley Smith is not the answer as a starting OG for a predominantly passing offense. Agreed?

And I'm also not banking on the injured Fox to be the solution either, aljough that one is debatable. So, I think we agree that the Dolphins still lack one starter along the OL, right?

Just to be clear, I'm assuming that Albert at LT, Pouncey at C, Turner at one of the OG spots and James at RT are our other 4 starters.

We both agree that Ozzie still lacks a starting RT for opening the 2014 season. I was just pointing out that he does have a good prospect for the 2015 season. He still needs a starter for 2014.

That's an excellent summary of Ozzie's method. Sound philosophy and inevitable to be successful long term. Naturally there will be peaks and valleys. The hilarity is that as soon as the naysayers think they have discovered a valley and attempt to rip Ozzie, the next high point is likely already underway.

Thanks.

The Ravens went into the draft desperately needing a RT. The Ravens left the draft still desperately needing a RT. As of right now, the Ravens have no RT on the roster. How is that good?

If Newsome were our GM, and he didnt draft a RT, lets be real...you would be calling for him to be fired.

End of discussion.

Wish we had Ozzie, but to suggest he's more prescient than his peers can be easily debated as it has been here. You can't debate the SBs and Divisional championships but as pointed out here, the past doesn't exonerate him for present boneheadedness, nor should it.

For some on FH, there's an ingrained reflexive mindset that so long as it's a player, coach, GM, deal made, draft selected, etc elsewhere, they automatically compare favorably to the Fins. If Kotite was stilll coaching the jest, we'd have members wishing we had him instead of Philbin based on his Philly successes before he jumped the shark. If this were '83, there'd be members looking the gift horse Marino in the mouth declaring there's a reason he plummeted to us, he'll be suspended for drugs and that we should have traded up for Todd Blackledge. It's just the nature of the beast around here. I can understand that in the relatively archaic times that have no connection with now, the Fins were an exemplary franchise and by comparison, it's disgraceful now. But the reality is that it's not only NOT your father's Oldsmobile, but not even yours since the make is itself extinct found mostly in classic car shows and in junk yards. It's just become "Pavlovian" and while he has less flaws than many, Ozzie's still got them

Worried

Miami Dolphins: Can this end up being a wonderful draft for the Dolphins? Yea, sure. But the front office could've traded down in Round 1 and still might've had a very legit shot of picking Ja'Wuan James. Second-round pick Jarvis Landry (No. 63) can contribute right away, but running a 4.77-second 40-yard time (last among wideouts at the NFL Scouting Combine) and having the second-lowest vertical jump is a tad worrisome. He wasn't fully healthy at the combine, but his subpar performance in Indy and average speed (4.62-second 40-yard time at his pro day) qualify him as possession receiver. The thing is, Miami needs an explosive playmaker who can line up in the slot. Landry averaged just 13.2 yards per catch in his college career.

Third-round pick Billy Turner could move inside on the offensive line, but asking a small-school player to switch positions in the big leagues sounds more like a task for a fourth- or fifth-round guy on a club with this many holes -- not the 67th overall selection. At least he's done it before, which helps.

Get over it already. We needed o-line help much more than the Ravens did and Hickey did what he had to do to correct the major issue this team had from last year.

Who cares what the Ravens did.

This. Seriously. Get over it. I really hope James becomes a great RT and yet people will still probably bitch

We did that last year... guess what happened

58 sacks later we got our right tackle.

Love Ozzie, think he's a heck of a GM but looking at his selections at OT the last few years I wouldn't exactly call him great at evaluating the position.

2007 3rd round (66th overall) - Marshall Yanda OT (most know he's a pro bowl guard for them now)
2007 Jared Gaither (supp. draft pick) - Jared Gaither OT (Has a few career starts but he was nothing to right home about and is now out of the league)
2008 3rd round (99th overall) - Oniel Cousins OT (9 career starts, now with Cleveland)
2009 1st round (23rd overall) - Michael Oher OT - Mr. Blindside. Was never the player on the left side they expected. Moved to the right side in his 3rd year I believe. Now with Tennessee.
2010 6th round (194th overall) - Ramon Harewood OT - Played 6 games with 5 starts his rookie season and hasn't been in the league since
2011 3rd round (85th overall) - Jah Reid OT - 7 career starts in 3 seasons, none last year
2012 2nd round (60th overall) - Kelechi Osemele OT - Kicked inside to guard, 23 starts last two years
2013 5th round (168th overall) - Ricky Wagner OT - 2 starts last year as a rookie.

It seems unless the OT Newsome drafts are kicked inside to Guard they're not very good so maybe he should have reached for a tackle...or maybe he can just trade for one like he did Eugene Monroe and save himself the trouble of drafting a position he hasn't had much success with.
