Hire Marino as Football Czar

Heard other people mention JT. How do you think he would do as a GM? He seems to be real smart, and he loves the Dolphins.

These threads about hiring former players to be GMs are missing the point.

Being a GM isn't about how popular you were as a player, the skill set to be a GM does not overlap with a players skill set, that should be obvious.

How did Matt Millen fare? He knew much more that Marino about football. How many rings does that guy have?

GM's need to be able to evaluate talent and manage a team which are NOT normal player skills

Ozzie Newsome has done pretty well wouldn't you think? I would think some players could recognize talent pretty well seeing that they played against it every week. I agree not every player could do it though.

Ozzie worked in the front office for over 10 years before being named the GM. He paid his dues and learned the job before he was promoted.

I'm going to get a lot of thumbs down for this, but I don't want Dan Marino anywhere near such a job.

Dan Marino took that job once and quit after two weeks when he realized he was actually going to have to work.

No thanks.

Yeah but that was 13 years ago

Yeah, it might take a while but some players could do it. Ozzie and others have proven it can be done by former players.

they hired him before and he quit after about 3 weeks didn't he?

He found out that he was going to be a "figure head" and not have any control...

If they gave him FULL control...I'm in!!!

I don't want him to be GM. I want him to be the guy that the GM is accountable to. I don't want Marino picking players, I just want him holding the decision makers accountable.

Give him the keys and let him roll with it. We have nothing to lose... Bring back Marino and Shula Jr. for those that disagree, I could care less. It would be magical to have these guys working with the organization again.

You've got to have someone in that role who is a football guy. Ireland as GM reporting to Ross is a disaster. Ireland can just BS his way out of any poor decision and Ross doesn't know jack to disagree. Imagine Marino (or any capable football guy) in that role in the offseason.

Marino: "Jeff - there's no way in hell you can not re-sign Long, move a poor-performing Jonathon Martin to LT, and have no one at RT and actually have that as your plan for the season... I mean WTF?!"
Ireland: "Well, we'll find a nice acorn or 2 and Martin will get better and better..."
Marino: "B***S*** - Tanny will get killed. Enough of your acorn nonsense. Do you think I'm playing QB? I'd even trouble behind that pathetic line. Well, maybe not. Anyway - go do some homework and figure out how to get us some NFL-caliber OT's"
Jeff: "But..."
Marino: "Get moving and get out of my office. I have a tee time in 30min. No more BS tomorrow"
Jeff: "yes sir"

Pretty basic stuff. Accountability.
