Let’s begin with some of the more recent head coaches that have had success in the past decade. We will look at their rosters at the point of assignment and the changes they made in those rosters. We will not look at the entire roster, only those that are key positions or changes that made an impact within the time frame to get them to a winning season. This will include any OC and DC changes made in that time frame as well.

In each case, we will only go as far as a division title or playoff run within the first 2 years…

Let’s begin with Billy Belichick.
He was hired January 27, 2000. He took over a team that had a 8-8 record and this team had not been to the playoffs since 1997. Their record in 98 was 9-7 and in 99 was 8-8.

1/27/2000 roster, not including draft picks, that were on the 1999 roster:

T/G Damien Woody
RB Kevin Faulk
RB Harold Shaw
DT Henry Thomas DT
G Joe Andruzzi G
LB Andy Katzenmoye
WR Terry Glenn
WR Troy Brown
WR Tony Simmons
QB Drew Bledsoe
K Adam Vinatieri
DE/DT Brandon Mitchell
CB Tebucky Jones CB
LB Willie McGinest
DE Greg Spires
LB Ted Johnson
DT Chad Eaton
S Lawyer Milloy
T Bruce Armstrong
S Tony George
CB Kato Serwanga
CB Ty Law
LB Tedy Bruschi

Damn!!! I see quite a few names in that line up! And 97% of them were starters!!!

Now let’s look at their draft in 2000…
  1. 1 Choice to SF thru NYJ
  2. Klemm, Adrian, T, Hawaii, 46
  3. Redmond, J.R., RB, Arizona State, 76
  4. @ Cherry, J’Juan, DB, Arizona State
    Robinson-Randall, Greg, T, Michigan State, 127
  5. Stachelski, Dave, TE, Boise State, 141
Marriott, Jeff, DT, Missouri [from StL] 161
  6. Harris, Antwan, DB, Virginia, 187
    Brady, Tom, QB, Michigan, 199
    Nugent, David, DT, Purdue, 201
  7. Tisdale, Casey, DE, New Mexico, 226
    Pass, Patrick, RB, Georgia, 239
Only 3 names jump out and grab you...

In 2000 they go 5-11 under Billy Boy… Even with the talent that he acquired from the 99 season!

Next season… 2001 line up…

C Damien Woody (On 2000 team)
RB Kevin Faulk (On 2000 team)
RB Antowain Smith
RB J. R. Redmond (On 2000 team)
FB Patrick Pass (On 2000 team)

LB Mike Vrabel
WR Terry Glenn (On 2000 team)
WR Troy Brown (On 2000 team)
TE Jermaine Wiggins (On 2000 team)
QB Drew Bledsoe (On 2000 team)

SS Lawyer Milloy (On 2000 team)
T Grant Williams (On 2000 team)
CB Ty Law (On 2000 team)
OLB Tedy Bruschi (On 2000 team)

2001 draft picks…
  1. Seymour, Richard, DT, Georgia, 6
  2. Light, Matt, G, Purdue [from Det] 48
  3. Williams, Brock, DB, Notre Dame [from Min] 86
  4. Jones, Kenyatta, G, South Florida [from SD] 96
Holloway, Jabari, TE, Notre Dame [from Min] 119
  5. Akbar, Hakim, DB, Washington, 163
  6. Love, Arther, TE, South Carolina State [from Det] 180
    Myers, Leonard, DB, Miami, 200
  7. Pochman, Owen, K, Brigham Young [from Det] 216
Turner, T.J., LB, Michigan State, 239
Seems that are 2 names that jump out as well in this draft… But if you haven’t noticed yet, the BILLY is hitting 2 of 9 in this draft and hit 3 of 11 in his first draft…

Seems to me that BB inherited a great starting line up from the get go and he padded a couple of positions before the team went to the SB in 2001…

Now… Let’s take a look at his staff!
Year 2000===== DC - Romeo Crennel, OC - Charlie Weis,
Year 2001===== DC - Romeo Crennel, OC - Charlie Weis,
So what have we learned in this scenario… It takes consistency with players and coaches to build a team that goes far… 97% of the 2000 team was part of the 2001 team that won the superbowl!!!

So is Bill a genius or did he step into a pot of gold?

I will post another history lesson tomorrow… We will look at yet another team that has turned it around in 2 seasons or less….

CHEERS!!!:dolphins: :dolphins: :dolphins:

Thanks for the history lesson. I think you have your OC and DC mixed up though. Romeo was Belichick's DC I think. Good post.

that was an excellent post, I think a lot of supposedly dolphin fans should read this... 5 STARZ!

I stand corrected... I misread the coaching list... I will correct it. Thanks for your input and tact in delivering such!!!

great work...lots of fine points...one thing though...Bill B, doesn't pick his players...his GM Scott Pioli does...

yeah one thing that stands out...he sure did have alot of draft picks to pick players from..unlike us

So Billy Boy, takes nearly the same team from a loser to a top contender from one year to the next. If that doesn't scream of great coaching, I don't know what does. Billy Boy did what Saban hasn't been able to do from one year to the next. He hasn't had this team prepared well to start the season, he's been slow to make changes when things are working and his offensive staffing decisions have been below average at best.

I believe that you are missing the point here bro...

What did Nick inherit? He definitely got one of the finer defenses in the league and they have gone from the top 10 in 2005 to the top 3 in 2006.

As far as offense, GUS and SAGE as QBs to DC and JOEY... HE also had to start all over again with a DC and an OC... Secondary is almost a complete wah from last year and the OL has had major changes as well...

Don't worry though... When I get done with the "History of Successful Head Coaches" I will follow it with how NICK SABAN ranks among them...:D That is, BTW, the whole reason that I am doing this thread!!!

And you are saying because Billy inherited a team that didn't change much but was absolutely awful one year but went on to win SB's he inherited far more talent?

My point is this. Bill has always found a way to take mediocre to above average talent and get the absolute utmost out of it. He's a phenomenal teacher and understands how to prepare a team completely for each individual challenge. He not only gets the utmost out of that talent but gets them to work seemlessly with the rest of the team. How many so called offensive studs has he lost and replaced them with guys that are seemingly as good? Bill understands how to utilize the strengths of his players and through strong team play reduce inadequacies. The same sort of thing Mangini has done this year.

You'd be hard pressed to say that any Pats team hasn't overperformed or overachieved. They were the second largest underdog in SB history and won. He even uses the rules to his benefit. The rules had to be changed because of how he manipulated them in secondary defense.

And of those draft picks, he had 5 players of 20 that ever amounted to anything... A 25% ratio... Is that Good?

It doesn't matter, he makes the most out of mediocre players. It's the only way a guy can win multiple superbowls in a short period of time in the era of free agency. He's a pioneer and already has to be considered one of the greatest coaches of all time across all sports. He's the greatest teaching coach the NFL has ever seen. When something is wrong, he teaches a guy that may not have the physical ability to compensate how to do it mentally.
