Houck on McKinney

Steve McKinney moved to center when he was picked up as a UFA by the Texans. He was a left guard in college and at the Colts. When he was told he was moving to center he spent a lot of time in the off season with Seth learning how to be a center. System, system, system!!!

Houck versus Wise??? I only know what I have been told--Houck teaches gap responsibility and technique. He has a bit of a Jekyl/Hyde personality and will totally humiliate a player on the field then praise him in the film room for the same play. He has pre determined favorites but NO position is settled. I thought it very interesting the only time Vernon was with the "first bunch" was when the public was viewing.
Wise was a strictly man on man guy and that scheme is ok with people and a backfield that has been together for a while. Defenses that went to exotic zone blitzes and overloads created havoc for our guys. With no running game and no "hot" reads there was no chance to slow rushers. Tony was not a teacher to young guys--he had little or no patience. In his defense, I think he was dealt an impossible situation with five new starters, no consistancy in the backfield, and bickering amongst offensive coaches. So far as evaluating players last year I think it should be totally forgotten and burn the game tapes.
Concerning Seth's "sweating" I don't quite understand how you can play hard in south Florida and not sweat. Once it's soaked how much wetter can it get? I watched him for four years at A&M and I didn't hear any such complaints. It's a bit like the line calls thing. Some reporter had a "source close to the team" and makes that crap up and then some of our more astute posters make a ridiculous issue of it.

Very interesting. I heard the same thing about Wise. I heard it was very difficult for the young guys to grasp ahold of his game plan. also that the veterans were responsible for preparing the younger guys.

About Vernon, I still do not see him starting at left tackle, that's interesting how he only got 1st team snaps in public.

"Houck indicated he has been impressed with the work of center Seth McKinney and that McKinney appears to be on track to retain his starting job. In addition, Rex Hadnot and Stockar McDougle have impressed Houck at right guard and right tackle, respectively."

I'm surprised:goof:

Maybe Houck can work magic.

Personally, I don't think there's anything good ol'Huck can do about McKinney getting steamrolled by the more physical NT's and DT's in the game........he's flatout not strong enough, not enough lower body strength.

His bro is a pretty good C too for the Texans. So I'm sure Houck can help this McKinney reach his potential.

Let's botox the man's jewels hahahah........really though, I heard that's the new treatment for excessive sweaters.

How do you feel about Houck as opposed to Wise? Do you think that last years' problems can be solved through this coaching change??

 I truely believe they can. I saw it when Bates took over.

From all what I read Houck does not very often mention the name McIntosh.
Houck has coached that guy before in San Diego and the Chargers did not spend a lot of effort to keep McIntosh a year ago when he moved to the Fins. I think if Houck liked what he saw in McIntosh he would have tried to keep him. Also, IF he is really trying to convert Carey into a LT then he must be really desperate

From what I remember Mac had a injury that they were not sure how long it would take to heal completely, if ever. Even last year he was still getting over it. By the end of the year last year, most of his problems were mental, and I think a good O-line coach can change that. I think McIntosh will win the starting LT job and if not I think St. Clair will get it. Carey is just not a LT from what I have seen.

Seth McKinney never played ONE down at guard for A&M. He started at center his redshirt freshman year and stayed there for four years. He never missed a game and I can't remember him missing but one practice in five years. His o-line coach remained the same but the offense changed four times in his four years. There were some challenges for some to make changes but not Seth. The very least of his problems are mental mistakes. I have asked this before with no reply but can anyone reading this board tell me (specifically) a bad call or a mental mistake he made last year?

It has been acknowledged, can't remember where - maybe Miami Herald, that a lot ofthe OL problems last season were because Seth couldn't make the line calls in time. Whether or not that is indicative of Seth's abilities, the system, or the coaching - I do not know.

I don't buy this compliment Houck is giving McKinney.....

McKinney was one of the weakest links on our OL in 2004. He should have never been starting either. He's a rag doll out there, and his transition to starting NFL Center was a complete failure....

He's not cut out to play C. Honestly, he just looks to small, and too weak to hold down the middle. Ruddy, even though a dinosaur, could have done a much better job last year if we would have kept him....

I don't like this at all. Houck may be a magic man when it comes to teaching, but on the field is where it all counts. McKinney sucks at C, and it's as simple a that. Put him at OG where he belongs. I'm not even sure if he could handle that...

We'll see how this all unfolds, but if go into the season with McKinney still starting at C, Frerotte better be prepared for IR....

PHINZ RULE!!!

He is too small and weak to play center, so we should move him to guard?? Centers are usally the smallest and "weakest" of the O-lineman. They more often than not, helping with double teams or getting out to the next level trying to pick off LBs. Guards need to be the biggest and strongest, while tackles need speed, quickness, and long arms. If he is too small and weak to play center, set him on the bench, we have a log jam at guard.
