houck set at 4

I have no problems with anything I've read, but remember, the article does say if the season were to start NOW. This lineup is fluid still.

I think we all knew McDougle and James were going to start, but I'm not at all suprised by the fact that McKinney's still in there. Hadnot has been a pleasant addition. I didn't know what I expected from him, but it appears that he might actually be a quality player. Good or him, better for us.

I don't care who wins the starting left tackle position, I just like the fact that they're battling and that their's real competition going on for it. I am confident that the best player for the job will win the job. If that's McIntosh, fine. That means that Carey is working hard and progressing. If it's Carey, McIntosh provides really solid depth. Either way, we're in better shape than I thought, and with zone blocking, I think we're in great shape...

Not happy with Seth would actually like to see Wade Smith get a shot there. But I agree with the rest of the Oline thus far.

I am actually excited to see what Seth can do this year with a good line coach. I honestly believe he is going to be the biggest surprise/impovement on the team this year.

Hold the presses

One thing that is more certain than ever in our media culture is that people jump to quickly on information as gospel. No where in that article did it say that Houck said these guys were the starters. That was implied meaning. Remember what they say about assumptions.

Well hopefully Houck improves McKinney's blocking technique, becasue I got tired of watching him getting bull rushed into our backfield  .

I agree with McDougal, Hadnot, and James starting; but I'm still skeptical about McKinney...just too many bad memories. If anyone can turn him around; I believe Houck can.

I'd rather us move rex over to the center slot and keep mcintosh at LT...then move vernon over to rg...:D
I don't want to sound like a jack *** but why do all of us think we know who should play where?? I have opinions like everyone else but I actually think these coaches know more than me. If Houck thinks Seth is the best center on the team than so be it. I assume he knows. I don't think his choices are final at this point. Hell I thought we needed a LT and when he was hired the re-signed Macintosh and didn't even go after one in the draft until the later rounds. When that happened and considering Mac played in San Diego with Houck I just assumed we missed something last year and the coaches coming in saw more promise there than we, the fans, were giving this unit. I do think Wannstadt was loyal t a fault, with the coaching staff and players.

For this year, that would be nice and I would agree... but this year we arnt tryin to win it all, we are tryin to build for the future. And IF Carey can play LT, I want him playin there as soon as possible to start learning the posistion that way maybe next year he will be comfortable at LT with a year under his belt...

Nasty

when i played football the coach would say one thing and do another all the time..., it's a ploy to get more out of the players. Houck may have one player ahead of another player on his head but not on paper yet as he his looking for more out of this group. They should all know that they are in a competition until the last day of training camp. My thoughts anyway.

Good point.

Lee listen to the interview. He pretty much says we are ggod to go at thoose spots but LT is still up for grabs.

I have no issue with McKinney at center. I think he was hurt the most by Tony Wise's coaching (or in this case lack there of). I think the McKinney we see this year will be a vast improvement over what we have seen the last year or two. I could see him being a very good NFL center.

The most interesting thing is Vernon Carey at left tackle...if Hud pulls that one off and Vernon becomes a starting left tackle Hud should be immediatley inducted to the Pro Football Hall of Fame. I'm not down on Vernon at all...in fact I have thought all along the guy should start but I was thinking right guard or right tackle....never in my wildest dreams did I think of him as a left tackle.

Ditto my man. I thought Vernon was a career RG. From what I heard, the U of M scouts even said he was dumb as dog poop and a slow learner. I never thought he had the footwork for LT. I figured he would be our RG this year.

If Houck transforms him into our starting LT, wow. I will eat crow. Miracle of the year.

Rex should be the starting Center, Mckinney blows big time, thats what I'm worried about most on this O line.

He answered the question as to who was emerging as a leader, not who was starting. He also said he hoped that ONE would emerge of those he listed as a leader and that you can't tell that until they play the games. I'm sure he didn't mean he would start one player for our OL.

Also, another piece of misinformation, propogated by the media; when he commented that "I don't know what they were trying to do, last year", he said it in the context of explaining he couldn't comment on what the problems were last year because because he wasn't familiar with what went on last year. NOW, we all know that's false because we know he studied the tapes, BUT, he wasn't going to make any disparaging comments about the prior staff.

I want all our First Round Picks to start this year...Ricky...Ronnie...Boston?...and that includes Vernon Carey at our LT spot...hey if you saw the coachs interviews you can see houck has confidence in Carey to start there...he helped a Roman Oben of the Charger get better...and plus hes from THE U

Another thought guys. What if Hudson Houck looked at this line and said, "What kind of depth do we have at LT?" I'm sure his answer would have been...none. Therefore, Vernon Carey, an expensive first-rounder, was given a look. I think McIntosh beats him out and Vernon rides the bench, but with dignity this year, because no one expects him to start at LT in his 2nd year. This gives the coaching staff more time to develop him, but I'm not overly optimistic that Carey will ever perform up to his loft first-round draft choice status.

Also, I really don't think Hudson had much choice. He came to the quick conclusion we all made long ago, no way was Wade Smith an LT. St. Clair failed at LT in St. Louis and we knew we couldn't get an LT this year in free agency or through the draft. Alabi is a project. So Carey, by default, was the only logical choice to provide some kind of depth at LT this year.

Houck, in case you haven't noticed, hasn't given Carey any ringing endorsements, only the standard coachspeak that he is working hard, etc. I hate to be pessimistic and I hope Houck works his magic with both Wade Smith and Vernon Carey, but I'm afraid both of those guys are examples of bad drafting from the WannSpiel era and will be backups this year, eventually fading off the team when suitable replacements are found and salary cap issues can be resolved.
