How badly did we misuse Karlos Dansby?!? Why did we get rid of both him and Marshall?

You spelled Jeff Ireland wrong.

Ireland wasn't the one who had a stick up his butt about character guys and outspoken players. He was the guy who brought these guys in, why get rid of them when they were still productive? Because the coach didn't want them. Ireland messed up a lot of things, but he is not the reason many of these productive vets were booted from the team.

Dansby was a bum when he played for Miami. He was paid to play and lead like a pro-bowler and only managed to squeak by as a slightly better than average LB. If we weren't paying Dansby like Ray Lewis at the time I wouldn't have had a problem keeping him around but since he was making pro-bowl money and not playing or leading as such it was time for him to go.

Ellerbe didn't perform well last season either but there are still two things going for him moving forward 1) he came cheaper overall than Dansby and 2) he is younger, if you look at their play for Miami (not what Dansby did in Arizona this season) the level of play between Dansby in Miami and Ellerbe wasn't that big of a drop off to be honest.

Marshal can catch passes from the greatest QB to ever play the game, according to him at least, let him and Cutler play **** around in Chicago. Dude made Martin look sane on some occasions and needed to go.

Last year playing for Arizona dansby had:

122 Tackles
6.5 Sacks
19 (!!!) PD
1 FF
4 INT
2 TD...

- Dansby was playing for a contract last year and had no job security, which likely motivated him more than we he had a cushy contract in Miami
- Dansby had a greater supporting cast in Miami, and therefore had less opportunities to make more tackles
- Dansby spoke out publicly against the team several times
- Dansby showed up to camp overweight again
- Dansby was grossly overpaid in Miami
- Coyle likes faster linebackers that can rush the A gaps

Consider these factors and get back to me....

How badly did we use Reggie Bush in the passing game?
With us he had back to back receiving seasons of 292 and 296 receiving yards
with Detroit in 14 games he had 506 receiving yards.

Bush's 292 and 296 yards receiving were the lowest of his career other than
2008 when he only played 8 games.

I do not believe we have great coaches in Miami, but some of the statements about great coaches are useful within this discussion.

* has a vision for the team.
* constantly trying to bring about the vision through teaching
* brings out the best in his players
* makes good decisions consistently

I will not knock Coyle and Philbin for having a vision for their defense. I believe they want an aggressive secondary. I believe they want mid sized fast linebackers. I believe they want DT to penetrate instead of focusing on occupying blockers. They want an ideal representation of a 4-3. Given his performance, it is reasonable to release Dansby since he does not fit the vision. I am disappointed that they did not do a better job of coaching Dansby to his potential within a 4-3.

Also, I will not criticize the acquisition of people during the Ireland time frame. It is clear that Philbin and Ireland did not cooperate efficiently when selecting and signing talent. I believes that Hickey and Philbin have a shared vision. We will have to wait and see if they made good decisions.

It'll be interesting to see how he performs in Cleveland, since he just got a nice contract. Maybe he only played hard for the big payday? Who knows...

Not to say definitively that contract-lust was the culprit; I agree that the decision to change to 4-3 with a house of 3-4-suited defenders is totally dumb.
