How can Ryan Tannehill & Mike Wallace take the next step?

Tannehill needs to develop a better deep ball with correct anticipation on where the receiver will be, not is. Secondly, Wallace needs to get better at contesting the ball

I see that the issues arm mostly with Ryan's throws. mike gets open just fine, but the long ball is mostly under/over thrown. Can you say Chemistry?

I expect a lot of improvement. Consider this:

1. Second year together, full offseason together, and it often takes a full year or so to get in sync with ridiculous speed.
2. Brandon Gibson was showing very well pre-injury last year, and with him in the lineup the offense kept the chains moving, meaning more chances to throw, and more opportunity to wear the defense down.
3. Tannehill rarely had a clean pocket with time to throw last year. No matter what, the presence of Branden Albert will give Tannehill more time to decide, more time for Wallace to get open deep, and allow Tannehill to focus solely on his downfield throw. Likely drafting of scheme-fit pass pro OL should bolster this.
4. Natural progression of a QB who has shown the ability to learn from his mistakes and continually improve.
5. After that season, Wallace will play with a chip on his shoulder, and let's face it, he dropped a lot of balls last year.
6. Our run game was non-existent under Sherman and our atrocious OL last year. Lazor always produces a decent run game. This takes some of the focus off of Wallace and the pass game and wears out the defense over time. Also, Tannehill is very good at play action fakes. If we generate a run game, they will be very effective, particularly over the top to Wallace.
7. Bill Lazor. He is excellent grooming QB's. We saw what he did with Nick Foles, who IMHO is less talented than Tannehill. Lazor also utilizes a lot of elements that Sherman didn't, like screen passes, motioning the WR, moving people around, disguising formations, etc.

Tanny needs more air under it.

I said the same all last year and not changing my stance on it.

He lacks the arc some of the more fluid, natural deep ball throws have and the "anticipation" of the route the WR is running after 20 yards. His pocket footwork also needs adjustments.

The guy we drafted was a dart throw in the intermediate areas and outside shoulder. That's what we got and we've seen it with some of those lasers he throws. I think he faces a real uphill battle though trying to be something that he's not and teams will continue to force him into the short/intermediate areas of the field, having no respect for getting beat over the top.

He's made the deep throws just fine to other receivers, just hasn't got in sync 100% with Wallace. No worries they will work it out.

My opinion is this, and some of you have said it as well: practice, practice, and practice some more. They need to spend alot of the offseason together hanging out together, really getting to know each other, learning each others strengths&weaknesses. Go to a park with a bag of footballs and play catchwith each other: deep routes, short&intermediate routes. Hell, use the entire route tree. Get the new playbook and learn it together, quiz each other on it daily. Some QBs&WRs can and do have instant rapports with each other; others have to work on it. RT17 and MW obviously need to work on theirs to get better together. Let's hope they're working together to improve and get better.

Here's some random excerpts pulled from pre-draft scouting reports.

Weight transfer and hip rotation on his deep balls and bucket throws is an issue and he tends to underthrow them.
In Tannehill's case, he tends to drop his elbow below his shoulder when throwing the ball and does not completely follow through with his arm on passes. He will sometimes come up short on his follow through with his arm because he hooks it, which leads to deep passes coming up short despite him having the velocity to throw them.
Lacks consistency to his deep ball throws, not showing the touch and placement necessary to completion. Will work to perfect this area of his passing game, leading up to the NFL combine and Senior Bowl.

As you can see, his deep ball has always been an issue. It also shows he hasn't gotten adequate coaching from us to fix these issues after 2 seasons, which is concerning and why a lot of us have been calling for the removal of Zac Taylor.

Also, almost all the places I grabbed these from, were praising his pocket presence. I think with a revamped line and Lazor coaching him up, we should see Tannehill's potential translate into production on the field this year.

He did?

Tanny was 11-for-60 on anything 21+ yards with 2 TD's and 4 INT's ..... Wallace was the recipient of 6 of those completions (36 targets according to PFF). Where was all of this "regularity" hitting the other WR's deep?

The thing with the deep balls that end up hurting are the missed TD conversions, as they are big time momentum shifting plays. Consistently missing them can be deflating to the offense.

Fact of the matter is, Tannehill has to deliever this year or it's going to be really tough to keep making excuses for him. This team is being built around him and almost every need has been upgraded, so hopefully he will break though.

He did compete really well and performed great at times this past season.

you mean can tannehill take the next step.

this is ALL on tannehill. wallace had NO issues with his previous qb and he didnt forget how to blaze by defenders on his way down to miami.

its funny watching the tivo of the games and seeing how short tannehill throws his passes to wallace and how all he can do is stand there and wait for the ball to come down like someone was on a platform over the field and drops the ball out of the sky.

on the latest free agent show that was running on NFL NETWORK, they had a segment they kept showing where wallace had spit the defenders deep with a safety over the top and wallace had to stand and wait for the ball to come down and of course, the 3 defenders were right on him by then and the ball was picked.

it is just hillarious watching people put the blinders on for tanny's long ball SHORTcomings.

I am not saying he didn't compete, he did a lot of things right last year, he just needs to take that next step, preferably right into the playoffs.

I don't think Wallace is anything else but a speed guy, he's not a good receiver and he ain't tough he doesn't fight for the ball.
We'll see this season what Wallace does he got $60 million to run a go route ****ing the worst signing ever.
