For a moment, let's forget about most of what's going on with our team, and focus on what's going on in the NFL. I read a VG article from former Phin Lydon Murtha defending Cog but, that has nothing to do with my point. He states that he had to pick up a tab for dinner in the amount of $9,600 in 2009.

Murtha was a 7th round draft pick of Detroit, and his salary was $310K. After working his ass off for years to try and have a shot in the NFL, all he got was $310K, and it was not guaranteed as all 7th rounders. Yet, he had to pay almost 10 grand for players making 10 times as much as a "right of passage."

Anyone have a problem with that? How many here would pay anything in coming out of College or HS to start a job?

His paying that takes away that money from family, maybe kids, to feed guys making much more for a night. I do not see that as right anywhere other than in the NFL.

This picking up the tab stuff is beyond stupid I would probably get flack like Dez Brynt did for not carrying pads because I would not be paying for anyones food

I do not know of anyone, in real life who would. In construction, when I bring a new guy in, he is often asked to buy coffee or a case of beer after work after his second check, as no one knows his financial situation. If he has a problem, the guys always buy for him, and 90% of the time he returns the favor. This is real life, especially in today's economy.

If anything good comes out of this, maybe it will be the elimination or severe reduction of that type of monetary intimidation. As I posted last night, if a fringe player with a short career is able to maintain an extra 10 or 20 or 30 dimes when his career is over, that can be a considerable difference in the ability to go back and finish his degree, or keep him afloat while he searches for another job.

I'm not preoccupied with how this reflects on the Dolphins. We won't be defined or distracted by this. The NFL is evolving and getting rid of hazing and its cousins is a positive step, IMO. I've been impressed with all the coaches and players who have emphasized that hazing was not allowed on their teams. It deflects the ridiculous idea that it goes on everywhere and is somehow a necessary right of passage.

I'm a cheap bastard,so I know they would hate me...but I would tell them to get bent.

that's the real debate, by nfl standards no bullying occured. by societal standards there is definitely some bullying or misconduct but not just to Martin. as far as the money thing he commited to it and then backed out. everything was already paid for, he is obligated to pay once he said yes he would go. I would pay too unless theres some emergency as to the reason why I couldn't go

it seems like I didn't read the thread lol opps but I think the nfl has a certain double standard as it pertains to employee conduct

Agreed. Golic said that Shula did not even allow fights on the field, and was going to fine him for getting into one. Walsh, "Ditka", Polian's teams, Mr Bill, etc, were others in not going along with this.

As reported, this went beyond rookies, and involved vets getting cash. Something is wrong here.

No idea what you do or where you work. Are you saying that you would have done this on your job?

Regardless of the circumstance of the agreement? C'MON Man, you would not pay for dinner but, would for a Vegas trip? ?

What, if anything, have you ever had to pay for in your own work place? What, if anything, were you ever asked to pay for?

I would invite the fellas to have all they can eat at IHOP.....throw down 100 pancakes if you want to, and I will pick up the bill. Maybe I would fork out $1000 for a team meal, but you crazy if you think I am paying 10 LARGE for everyone. Phack them....and call me cheap!!!

did he pay for the entire trip or just his portion of it? hes paying his own portion as far as I heard

I paid for drinks for like 6 of us but we all take turns doing that. I think I misunderstood the arrangement between Martin and his teammates. I thought he was paying only a portion of a trip which he agreed to go on

“Every year, as tradition, the offensive line goes on a big Vegas trip,” Mutha said. “Everything is paid for in advance, from hotels to a private jet to show tickets. Martin originally verbally committed to the trip, then later backed out after everything was booked. Now, if you can’t go because of an emergency then it’s okay, but to say you’re going and then decide you don’t want to spend the money later? Everything was paid for, and then when it was time to pay up he didn’t want to go anymore. You don’t do that to your brothers. The veterans who paid for it, including Incognito and others, asked for Martin’s share, and he gave it to them. End of story.”

that's what I read which is perfectly fine he committed to go

Nothing should come out of this except for think before you start screaming death penatly. Nothing happened to Martin thats even worth discussion, the only reason this has become what it has is became Martin walked off his job and now trying to scheme the league and the fans so he can keep getting paid. period.

The question here is if any rookie should be forced to pay anything, and if anyone here would pay anything on their jobs in real life. Why is the NFL exempt, and why should they be.

Because it used to be that way is not an answer today.
