How Exempt Should The NFL Be From Real Life?

For a moment, let's forget about most of what's going on with our team, and focus on what's going on in the NFL. I read a VG article from former Phin Lydon Murtha defending Cog but, that has nothing to do with my point. He states that he had to pick up a tab for dinner in the amount of $9,600 in 2009.

Murtha was a 7th round draft pick of Detroit, and his salary was $310K. After working his ass off for years to try and have a shot in the NFL, all he got was $310K, and it was not guaranteed as all 7th rounders. Yet, he had to pay almost 10 grand for players making 10 times as much as a "right of passage."

Anyone have a problem with that? How many here would pay anything in coming out of College or HS to start a job?

His paying that takes away that money from family, maybe kids, to feed guys making much more for a night. I do not see that as right anywhere other than in the NFL.

I think this is a great question, it does appear to me that culturally the NFL version is at odds with society at large. The idea that these men are professionals but yet behave at best like frat boys is hard to justify. I have still not heard how using racial epitaphs toughens anyone up, or how cutting someones hair makes them a better teammate. There are tons of philosophies on team building and mentoring most don't include putting icy-hot in someones jock.

I would be curious why anyone thinks its OK for this behavior (hazing) to go in the NFL but yet should not be done at your own office or job site. Do you actually wish it did go on at your work?

We so often hear tragic stories of players lives after football, shouldn't there experience at the first job help them become integrated into society?
