How many wins for Philbin to keep his job?

Philbin does two things as a head coach that I like:

1. He is excellent on replay challenges. He really is.

2. He is very receptive to change in a lot of areas where football coaches are usually extremely conservative. I've heard radio guys making fun of him for the 5 minute water break, for instance. What's funny about it? He is trying something that he has reason to believe can reduce training camp injuries. Last season he tried giving players Thursdays off. This season he thinks giving players Mondays off will be better, so he's doing it. I think 30 other coaches in the NFL give the players Tuesdays off, and I bet for 28 of 'em the reasoning is "Well, that's just the way we've always done it."

He split the practice fields in training camp to get more reps, but then went away from it for a time when he thought it was causing a problem elsewhere. He's also clearly changed his management style and the way he interacts with the players at least two seasons in a row. I actually think that Philbin's willingness to try new things or defy conventional football wisdom is a huge asset for the team.

Of course, the flip side is that I think he often 'plays favorites' with respect to who is going to get playing time, and I think he shot himself in the foot by sticking with Mike Sherman even when it was obvious Sherman was not doing a good job. I also don't see him bringing any special skills or tremendous competence on either side of the ball to the table.

Joe Philbin strikes me as a guy who can be a pretty good head coach if he has good assistants who can see to the details. I don't think he is a great head coach, but Harbaugh did turn us down.

I can't disagree with those 2 points. I just don't think he has what it takes to be a successful head coach without an elite QB to carry him. Tannehill is good but far from elite. He can pick up trash in the locker room better than any coach in the league, as well as read from notecards.

I think the notecards and trash things are totally pointless things. There are far more disturbing things about Joe Philbin's coaching performance you can look at. Connecting a lot of dots on what's going on with Bill Lazor and Ryan Tannehill, I actually think that Joe was completely incompetent when it came to assessing and facilitating the development of his QB. We've been told that Lazor had to come in and immediately fix Tannehill's footwork and that he's suddenly looking much better with the deep ball in practice, and I think back to what GM_Davenport posted about that after the 2013 season.

How the hell does a fringe NFL scout who posts on our board come in and pick up on something that our damn head coach apparently missed for two years while the QB was being tutored by his OC's son-in-law?

That disturbs me.

Perfect example of nepotism at it's finest.. never works out..

Same as I predicted in the other thread...9-7. If we don't make the playoffs though, I would like to see him canned, keep Hickey, and possibly promote Lazor (depending on how this offense pans out.) Hell, I would like to fire him even if we make the playoffs...but I don't think that will happen.

The whole league is becoming a "good ole boys" club. Coaches just bounce from one team to the next, regardless of how bad they did in the last gig. A lot if "in-breading" and nepotism going on. That is why I always hope for college coaches to come in each time. I hope for fresh perspective. That is what Chip Kelly is doing in Philly, and I hope Lazor brought those fresh perspectives with him...and not the "good ole boys club" mentality.

Winning season or get the hell out of here but knowing Ross he will extend him.

9 wins, but you will have to factor in that there are teams out there are better than the dolphins

10 Wins or a playoff birth with 8 or 9.

Dan Marino could very well be the point man finding a new coach and direction for this team come Christmas. There could be some exciting possibilities, but I just do not want to see the team starting OVER again.

10 win and the playoffs, this will not be a Marvin Lewis type of experiment. Show decent progress or find another job.

I think 9 would be enough, though plenty of coaches win/lose due to factors beyond their control. I'd say Rex Ryan is as good or better than Belichick pretty much across the board, but one guy has Brady while the other has Sanchez/Smith. Judging the overall direction of the team is a much better barometer than win total IMO.

If Ireland was as bad as people say he was then Philbin/Hickey should get at least a couple years to show what they can do, otherwise we're just hopping from fall guy to fall guy.

Playoffs or a minimum of 10 wins. If we miss the playoffs at 10-6 I'm not going to want to see the guy canned. If we make the playoffs, regardless of record, same deal.

That kind of rationale has got us keeping people too long as is. When we changed from Sparano to Philbin its not like he tore apart the whole team.

If it is playoffs or bust we will simply blow it up and start over again. Who knows what we'll have then? We finally have guy who at least understands that you can be more competitive in today's NFL if you use schemes that benefit from the newer passing rules. Maybe Marino will be able to "advise" some sense into Ross if Ross wanted more than just the Marino name around to coax a new coach to sign.

It should depend more on how he performs as a HC and how the team reacts. For example, if we have a bunch of injuries and miss the playoffs but the backups play their asses off and are well prepared, firing him would not make sense. And if that happened then this franchise would have to wait for yet another owner before we can compete. My biggest fear is that Ross cares too much about public perception and the public often can't see past this year.
