How Much Blame Goes On Players?

Real question should be how the heck has rashad jones found a way to just completely get away from the fans & medias targets?

This dude was the #1 rated safety by PFF last year, got his contract, and is now one of the worst. Quite the turnaround by that guy in a few years time. This guy did absolutely nothing for us this year.

Tannehill really struggled in the two final games. I can understand how the really cold gusty wind in Buffalo would be difficult if he's not used to those conditions but after Hartline went down against the Jets, he really struggled and then he tried to force things and threw the interceptions. Did he have any injury concerns going into these games? He looked abnormally bad.

He hurt his knee in the Buffalo game (even missed a few series) and was wearing a sleeve during the week at practice. Basically the same thing that happened to Flacco and they both looked like garbage the final week, probably not a coincidence.

Great question. I don't know what happened there, Jones was terrific a year ago. He earned the big contract. While he flashed at times this year, I was very surprised that he went backwards - probably more than any other player on the team. Has anyone got any explanation? Did he get corrupted by a woman? I don't understand it.

Re: 1. The o-line is all on Ireland, but Philbin never even tried different personnel in games after seeing that he had a problem.

Thats like, the opposite of the truth or something.

The starting line-up was bad in preseason. The starters were bad to begin the regular season. During the games before Bullygate, Philbin only substituted due to injury. He kept saying that "he believed in these guys" (the original 5 starters). McKinnie was brought in, Martin was moved to RT, and Clabo was benched AFTER Ireland and Philbin's meeting with Ross. Philbin would have continued to play his original 5 starters if not forced by Ross to make a change.

On second thought, I'll change my assigning of blame to 50% on Ireland for his failure to put together a strong o-line after years of working on it (and drafting/keeping Martin), and 50% on Philbin for trying to force the OL into a different scheme.

The point is that a high number of sacks doesn't automatically derail a season in terms of a QB's overall performance. It's not like being sacked a great deal inherently equates to a bad performance overall.
Of course it doesn't... there are exceptions, you should know that...

Exceptions to what? You sound as if you know of some sort of objective rule that exists between sacks or pressures and overall QB performance?

overall most qb's that take the percentage of sacks that Tannehill has took have less than stellar seasons.
Pressure like that causes turnovers and the body takes a beating. whenever a qb takes that many sacks mistakes are going to happen.
I personally think he did solid for as crappy as his line was.

And if that's true, how do we know it's due to the sacks and not to the fact that those quarterbacks aren't very good?

Here are the ones who have taken at least 50 in a season since 1994:

Their QB ratings appear to be independent of those sacks. The ones who would normally have higher QB ratings still do, and the ones who would normally have lower QB ratings do, as well.
