How much money are the Dolphins on the hook for Tua?

I won’t link it to concussions, but there are some posters here with some very short memories.

Steve Young had 7 career concussions. Aikman had 10.

Take aside the increased sensitivity in this ultrajudgy world we live in, Tua is still several concussions fewer than those guys. I suspect if the decision is his, he will likely choose to play. And everyone acting like he’s some strange anomaly and walking on eggshells for him should remember these other QBs who went through the same and more and were simply expected to play.

I’m not saying what’s right or not. I’m simply saying the smart money is on him playing again. And then possibly, again.
Not all concussions are created equal though.

Could they Have him voluntary retire, give the $ back, then pay him what he’s likely owed to be a part of the coaching staff/front office without being on the hook of salary cap?

Personally I don’t think he’ll retire, and will be back.

Feels like if they even float that idea, Goodell would pounce on a couple more first round picks

The first question is if he gets medically cleared. If not, the question is moot.

Question is also who has to clear him? Dolphins medical staff? NFL? A doctor of his choosing?

He needs multiple clearances, both from the team doctor and an independent specialist.

1. If Tua is NOT medically cleared to play again, he can collect on the remaining $124m guaranteed.

2. If Tua IS medically cleared to play, but opts to retire, he foregoes the remaining $124m guaranteed.

Now that we know the Dolphins would benefit from Tua being cleared to play and not wanting to..... we might see this battle take place.

The Dolphins have to get their team doctor (an employee) and an independent neurological consultant to both agree Tua can return to football. Personally, I don't think this is much of a hurdle. The Dolphins have unlimited resources, and finding a doctor that agrees with them won't be difficult. Let's remember, football is inherently a dangerous sport. It's always safer to not play football, but I think the bar will be low here.

The question is then, if Tua finds his own doctor that says he shouldn't play, the NFL and independent arbitrators will get involved. Tua being carted off the field after coming back to play would be a TERRIBLE look for the NFL. So I see them firmly on the side of the player here. I think ultimately this ends in some settlement with Tua getting some but NOT ALL of his remaining deal.

Did I get anything wrong? What are your thoughts?
Too much and anyone who was beating the drum for this contract extension now sees why it was a terrible idea.

What about the balance of his signing bonus…are you predicting he’ll collect the balance (124 Million) or the percentage of the signing bonus (54 Million) that he has already collected? I don’t think your line of thinking is far from what will happen…just curious about the bonus.
Wasn't the signing bonus 44 mill, plus the 5th year of his contract. Remember his new deal is an extension, starting next year with the 50 plus.

Knowing how the league holds us to the highest level of the laws and rules, and screws us over the most, or at least close to the most...I can see the league forcing medical retirement and granting him his guaranteed money, which will fvck our cap up.

Let's look at this logically. The worse outcome for the league is if Tua is medically cleared and decides to retire because no way he doesn't demand that $124 million regardless of the clearing. There will be a huge lawsuit between the league and the NFLPA. Let's face it, Tua could find a million doctors to support a retirement. The league will make sure that scenario doesn't happen. So if Tua puts out feelers that he will retire no matter what the doctors say, I guarantee that the doctors won't clear him.

I think the worst outcome for the league is if Tua is cleared and plays, and then gets another concussion.

Personally, I think if Tua wants to retire and the Dolphins medically clear him to play, the NFL will land on Tua's side in arbitration because it looks way worse as an organization to allow a player to kill themselves.

Yea, I think I said the same thing. The NFL will not be fighting the PA over this. In other words, we will be on the hook for all the money and cap space.

I think the second worst outcome is one where Tua is retired and the Dolphins cap is wrecked for years to come because of a league commodity that is no longer playing while an NFL franchise sucks really bad and doesn't make the league as much money anymore.

None of their concussions left them fencing on the turd. Furthermore the league has implemented many protocols stopping players from playing with concussions. It is no longer expected.

I think it'll be somewhere in between where all parties win.

Dolphins pay less.
NFL doesn't let Tua play
Tua still gets paid a lot of money
