how much of a raise is jake long in line for?

I know that he said he would be here for a while, but would you be willing to spend close to 10% of the team's salary on one guy who plays a position of diminishing importance in this offense?

Philbin considers LT one of, if not THE most important position outside of QB. So it's not a position that is diminishing in importance according to our head coach.

Ask Richmond Webb if Dan Marino's qucik release and pin point accuracy made him better.........

Having watched many of those games, if it wasn't for Richmond Webb neutralizing Bruce Smith for as long as he did, Marino's quick release would not have mattered.

Sad that fans here, to make a point have to trash a player like Richmond Webb. There argument isn't any more relevant than it was then. Except, the players have gotten faster and bigger off the edge. But hey, let Long walk, and watch someone SMART with a franchise QB pick him up....or even better he take a pay cut to go to some place like, ummm... New England and protect Brady's blindside. Now that would be classic.

as far as long being broken down, yeah it's disturbing, but who knows, he's played through injury (for good or bad) and he could be healthy going into this season. the dolphins like the rest of us want to see a healthy long for an entire season before recommitting to him.
And that makes sense but at the same time we're treading in dangerous waters. If we don't sign Long or Wake before the end of next season we will lose one of them. We can only franchise one player and the other will go to the highest bidder on the free market. We're on the verge of losing one of these guys.

There is no denying Jake is awesome but this new offense allows for someone of lesser talent to play the position efficiently and we do have Martin now and a few other guys that can play the RT position (Murtha, Garner, Jerry). Martin could spend the season playing RT and then switch to LT so IMO we have some insurance there. We have no insurance for Wake, he's our only pass rusher. No one else on this roster has proven to be able to put consistant pressure on the QB like Wake does and that's the bigger issue. Ideally it would be good to re-sign Long for the same contract Joe Thomas got from Cleveland and then we can tag Wake if we needed to and I hope that Ireland does that after he gets all the rookies signed and we see where we are with cap space. We should be somewhere in the $7 million dollar range after all the rookies are signed. That gives us some room to sign a free agent or two and it should be enough to sign Long. You have to leave yourself some room though in case someone gets injured and you need to sign another free agent to fill their spot.

then its simple, you franchise jake. wake is on the wrong side of 30 already.

Then you're paying Jake $12.88 million under the franchise tag. Word is the salary cap is going to be flat again next year ($121 million) so he would be getting more than 10%...for just one player. I don't know, I don't know what the right answer is here.

Joe Thomas got 7 years $84 million with $44 million guaranteed. His cap hit the first year was $14.3 million, it's $11.9 million this year my guess is Jake wants a deal similar or possibly just above what Thomas got.

Now that's a scary thought.

Funny how you have a rookie T, being able to handle NFL pass rushers already. As for the choice between Wake and Long, its a no brainer....you take the guy in his PRIME. I can't believe some of you actually buy into this mediocre LT nonsense. If Brady had Long in the SB, they win. Its that simple.

Funny how Jake Long was able to handle NFL pass rushers as a rookie. I don't discredit Martin as a rookie and I also posted that he would play on the right side this year and then switch so he wouldn't be a rookie when he took over the LT spot....but good reading comprehension on your part.

Even though Jake Long is my favorite Dolphin, I have to agree with the people who say giving 1 player 10% of the total pot is ridiculous. Hope Ireland is smart enough to get something for him if does not want to pay him.

Keep Long. we need to protect T-Hills blind side. we need long more then ever with a young QB. You can franchise him next year if he does not sign. I would keep it to 5 year contract and not any longer. We have to block Mario Williams and NE new ass rushers.

I am convinced we have the stupidest fans in the NFL. I cant for the life of me figure out why anyone would want to get rid of our only elite player when he's 26 years old. We have the cap space. Its not a financial problem. We arent signing big FA's with this regime. But people want to let hime walk, and they act like getting a decent LT to replace him would be easy? Even the decent LT's make 8-10 million a year....you want to let Long walk to save 2 or 3 million a year?. Sounds like a pretty dumb idea to me.

New England's left tackle makes $616k a far cry from $12 million a year

I don't mean to be that guy, but I was cracking up at ass rushers.

A good measuring stick would be the contract Joe Thomas got last year. If that's the case then were looking at 8 years 92 million w/ 44 mill guaranteed and probably a little more since it's going to be 2 years later. The first 3 years we would be looking at an avg of 10.5 per year and by the 4th year it drops down to less than 9 mill per year. I think the 4th year is key because it's going to be difficult to pay top dollar for Jake Long if Tannehill lights it up and we need to pay him top 10 qb money on his next contract. I could see us putting an option year around year 4 or 5 of the contract. I could also see a scenario where there impressed with Martin this season and allow Jake long to walk but again that's only if they are happy with Martin because we may not require a top shelf LT with a mobile qb and the offense we will be running. Just my thoughts
