Long offseason without football, so I thought I would write up how I would have handled offseason. This is not done with the intention of thinking im right, but something to kill time, look back on and hopefully have others do same.

IMO not including coaching changes there were 3 deficincies which had to be fixed this offseason:-
1-Offensive line
2-Run Offense
3-Run Defense

I would tailor FA along 3 lines:-
1-Re-signing what works
2-Fixing the deficincies
3-Allowing room on roster to attack the strength of the draft.

Re-signing what works
Randy Starks DT - underrated and highest rated FA interior defender on PFF rankings
Brent Grimes CB - best player last year
Chris Clemons FS - Massively underrated IMO. Pass D was not an issue last year and part of that was down to Clemons.

Fixing the deficiencies
IMO LT was the major need this offseason. There were 4 options:-
1-Eugene Monroe
2-Brandon Albert
3-Jared Veldheer
4-Anthony Collins

Monroe was my favourite but he was always signing with Baltimore. My choice would have been Collins. The other two, both have injury issues and Collins much like Albert is a better pass blocker than run blocker, which fits what Philbin wants. He also costs approx. $3m less a year.

The RT spot was more difficult and I can now see why the Dolphins chose to fill through draft of which I agree with. All the above mentioned are best suited to LT and all are overpayed to play RT. In my mind much like Munroe, Strief was never an option and the fallback was resigning McKinnie or Clabo.

My other FA choices would have been:-

Knowshon Moreno RB - Better all round player than Miller and also superb in pass protection
Ben Hartstock TE - An excellent blocking TE of which we need to compliment Clay and challenge both Sims & Egnew.
Anthony Collins OT - LT was need and he is excellent in pass protection
Shelley Smith OG - A run first OG but has played under Benton and would challenge for starting spot.
Brandon Spikes ILB - A lot would disagree with this but IMO, the poor run game was down to the LB core not the D'line. He is one of the best run stopping ILB and immediately improves the run game allowing Ellerbe & Wheeler to challenge for OLB opposite Misi. We all obsess about beating the Patriots but we lost to the run first Bills twice last year. Winning one of these would have had us in playoffs.
Louis Delmas S - He would challenge both Clemons & Jones for starting time. IMO competition creates improved performance and Delmas would provide that.

Allowing room on roster to attack the strength of the draft
I like the idea of identifying before FA, 4 strength positions of the draft and then tailoring FA so that our perceived 'needs' tie in with this. I would then double up on these positions allowing competition between rookies and back end of roster, with the expectation that the 1st round pick would start day 1.

For example, IMO the 4 positions of depth in draft were WR, OL, DT & CB (DE was a strength IMO but with 4 already on roster it would have been a wasted pick). WR & OL was a strangth of 1st round, with OL being more of a need and depth at WR was greater. Thus I would have gone OT in 1st round:-

I will stick to the picks we chose at:-

1st pick, 3 choices - James, Bitonio & Kouandijio. As a player I prefer Kouandijio, but he does not fit the pass orientated zone blocking sheme we run. I like Bitonio, but his arm length scares me as an OT prospect. James IMO does not have the upside of the other 2, but is a day 1 RT starter, who fits a ZBS and is a very good pass blocking OT.

Rest of draft would have gone:-
2 - Louis Nix DT
3 - Donte Moncrief WR
4 - Pierre Desir CB
5a - Antone Exum CB
5b - Laurent Tardiff-Duverney OT
6 - Jeff Janis WR
7 - Anthony Johnson DT

Please tell me what you disagree with and more preferably would love to read other views on how you would have handled offseason.

First and foremost, the whole house would have been cleansed. There were several glaring coaching problems last year and I am trying to be optimistic this year.
1. The Bucs game after the Martin scandal. Philbin needed to rally his team and have them focus on the task at hand; he either wouldn't or couldnt.
2. Half-time adjustments. We always seemed to come out flat and never seemed to be able to adjust to the other team while they always seemed to adjust to stop us.
3. The last two games. Absolutely inexcusable. How do you lose to Thad Lewis and Geno Smith when your playoff lives are on the line?

Secondly, I try to address ALL "need" positions before the draft. You do not want to go into the draft "having" to fill a certain position, like we had to. James may turn out to be a good pick, but everyone knew we were going for OL.
Thirdly, Free agents: I like the Albert signing, along with Smith. I would have signed another T or G and maybe trusted Garner to fill the other role and see how the draft went. Finnegan would not have been my #1 choice and I probably would have tried to keep Patterson on a restructed deal. Delmas is fine, but we need more depth there. I'm okay with the changes on the D-line as we probably couldn't keep Solia and Starks. I'm not sure what to do with the LB as we kinda have to keep what we have as they would not have saved much to let them go, then where is the money coming from to sign someone else. I still want to re-sign Keller, if he's healthy.
Fourthly, trades. I'm going to see what I can get for Wake. I have Vernon and Jordan for my ends, Wake is getting older and is going to cost more. If you don't trade him now, you don't get much for him later. I also am going to do anything to get anything for Moore. His salary is too high and I will draft a QB to replace him, unless you trust Devlin.
Fifthly, cuts. Moore, if no one will give me anything for him and Patterson, but as I mentioned earlier, try to bring Patterson back on a re-structured contract.

I prefer to keep my own players if affordable until after I have a know comodity on the team that works.
Resigned for 1 year at least and all were affordable
Chris Clemons (backfield captian missing skill but backfield has fallen apart in the past in his absense IMO)
Nolan Carrol (Carrol was showing some good promise last year we have a mutile year investment in terms of time in the guy)
John Jerry (Jerry can play guard and tackle and could provide some insurance if Albert goes down as he has every year but last year and some insurance in case one of the rookies does not work out. I understand the the bullygate BS but Jerry did not appear for his part to be a main cog in that situation)

McKinney ( I proably would have signed him on the cheap for the above insurance see Jerry.

Outside of that my main thrust if I could not have resigned those 2 offensive guy would have according to the money signed I believe it was Moreno a veteran guard for Jacksonville, a proven inside linebacker and hit Big Paul on another home town discount. May not have been able to afford all 3 but I would have gone after 2 real hard and then double up in the draft at those positions for help on top of the 2 OL men we draft this year.

First off, Philbin would be gone..
Clemons signed him on..
Jerry gone signed big mac for 1 year
Finnagan, a gamble but not bad. big reward. If not Taylors ready.
Big paul, resigned..
Blount over Moreno.

Albert or Monroe, I like Morone as well. the oline is a no brainer..

Draft:

Move out of #19 and grab BPA and pick up a 3rd

1. ASJ

2. Hyde or Hill

3. Moses

3. Gabe Jackson

4. Huff WR

5. Exum CB

6. Janis WR

7. BPA

Undrafted any and every ILB I could find and wait tll the 2015 draft

I would have spent the money to sign D'Qwell Jackson. Otherwise, I am satisfied that the team is significantly improved. I cannot wait to see Tannehill run Lazor's offense.

The only think I may have done was make stronger pushes for Asamoah and Livinal Joseph...

I actually like what you all did in the offseason minus the LBer position. I would have upgraded there big time I think your LBers are not thay good.

But when I look at a team on paper well Fins got better though I hate saying that.

I actually like the Bills O'line draft picks. With teams all clamouring for pass orientated lineman, the power running, man blocking types are falling. If you run that you you can create a beast of a line.

With C.Glenn at LT, Kouandijio & Cyril Richardson, its going to open up holes for Jackson and Spiller. Just hope to god Henderson doesn't get his act together.

So true, and what's going to happen is the running is coming back like it always does.. The NFL is on a college kick right now, pretty soon the Running game will be back in force and the teams that catch on sooner will be the one's playing in January.. A good running Game always open up the passing and the Bills know that...

Like a couple of others have mentioned Philbin would have been gone. Not sure I would have let him on the plane after losing to the bills for the 2nd time. I have ZERO confidence in him at this point. Can't understand our owner's thinking. He fired Tony but kept Jeff, now he kept Philbin but fired Jeff. Was it Jeff's fault the team came out like a bunch of girlscouts the last two games of the season with the playoffs on the line?? Both should have been fired. Philbin is simply not a leader of men. He throws a hissy fit over something like a gum wrapper on the locker room floor, but turns a blind eye on a situation as big as Martin/Richie. Seems like a bit of a control freak to me. We won't go any where with him calling the shots.

Next I would have resigned Nolan and Clemons for small salaries like they signed elsewhere. No way I sign Courtland. Would have liked to kept Big Paul but not for the price he signed in Atlanta. We are gonna miss him for sure. And we HAD to sign one of those two KC guards. Our GM found the only FA OG in the league worse than the backups we already have.

We are looking at another 6-8 win season, with the jills getting better I see us finishing 3rd at best this year in the East. But on a bright note, that should at least get Philbin out of here. I see a situation where Philbin doesn't even make it through the season, and that would be fine with me.

Where?? At what position?? I mean if you break it down position by position across the OL you can say we got better at LT, but as a whole I really don't see a better OL. At Rb, yeah I can see that, but where else?? Trading Paul for Mitchell was a downgrade, trading Patterson and Nolan for a washed up injured Finnigan was a down grade, Delmus for Clemons was at best a wash, and I really can't see a late rd pick doing much to upgrade our LBs.

The two bottom teams definitely got better in the East, I really don't see the top two teams having gotten better.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion but have you ever liked any move the dolphins have made??? You may have done so at some point, but I can not remember ever reading anything positive from you about the Dolphins...

As to the OP's Question - I like the direction the organisation has taken with Hickey... has he fixed everything NO but I think he has started well... I would have seriously tried to drop back in the draft and tried to pick up James a little later, gaining another pick. Week one will tell us everything!

Looking forward to beating the Pats week one and shocking all the naysayers...

You may be right about this but I think for what Coyle wants to do, Mitchell offers more of an all around game that Big Paul did not or could not. Mitchell was very good against the run for Houston last season plus he offers the potential for Miami to have a true three or four man rotation to keep the defensive tackles from tiring out in the 4th quarter when teams go to their hurry up offense.

I see a lot of Philbin firings but nobody saying who would have replaced him. Big time draft impact.

I retain Philbin and do a lot the same. I would have overspent for Byrd over Delmas and likely a different younger corner over Finnegan.
