Hurricane Irma Only thread

Tornado warning here in Miami Dade County. I also saw a water sprout like 5 houses to right of me earlier... Scared the F out of me lol.

Tornadoes are far more powerful but in a vastly smaller geographic area.

Wind speeds from tornadoes have been known to drive pine needles into trees.

They can hit the house across the street from you and leave your home completely undamaged.
 
It's really odd that Irma hasn't turned north yet. She's way past where she was projected to turn. Still moving west.

Maybe FL Panhandle landfall isn't out of the question after all.
 
A tornado is much more powerful than a hurricane, inside of its arc. It also is usually good for only a half hour, usually less.

A hurricane lasts for days instead of minutes, and is gigantic.

The sheer size and duration of a hurricane (which I have never experienced) sounds a hell of a lot worse than a tornado (which I have experienced).

Tornadoes wreck farms and towns. Hurricanes wreck states and small countries.

So yeah, while a tornado may be more destructive in its tiny little area, I'd take it over a hurricane all day long.

The real disadvantage of a tornado is you only get a few minutes warning most generally. Just enough time to gather the family and head to the basement.

They are saying on channel 4 here its about to stall and then turn up.

To clarfiy, yes overall I agree with you, but the thing is if your in the path of a tornado- there really is zero protection.

At least with the hurricane your shuttered up etc and hopefully can withstand it - unless your directly by the eye wall area.

Quite true. Grew up dealing with it and am still dealing with the damn things, every spring/early summer. Like I said when I edited my post, the real problem with tornadoes (other than the obvious) is the almost zero warning time. We have watches, warnings, and emergencies. Watches mean likely, warnings mean funnel clouds are dropping, and emergencies mean there's a mean one on the ground and she is inbound hot.

I dunno. Tornadoes can **** some **** up RIGHT NOW, with zero warning. And pound for pound, they pack a hell of a lot more punch than a hurricane....

....but they only last a few minutes, a half hour is a pretty old tornado. And they are pretty focused, very small storms compared to a hurricane.

I was but I had an issue getting on the flight because of no return trip... :\ The track changed as well so I weighed options and we stayed.

Close to 20 years ago we had an F5 less than a quater mile from our house in the middle of the night. Craziest thing I've ever been through. Absolutely sounds like a freight train. Didn't even know what it was or that it was a threat. Not until i started getting calls from everyone first thing in the morning asking if we were ok.
No warning, makes it much more terrifying.
 
I'm getting my Irma updates right here on FH. For all the weather shows, I figure the guys on the ground (you Floridians) explain it in Laymans terms with better accuracy.

But you hurricane folks have terms I don't understand. For instance: what is a "wobble"? And what is a "band"?

Us folks in the Midwest (tornado guys) haven't heard of these before. Sorry for the ignorance.

Weather Channel just showed a reporter standing on a street in Miami in ankle deep water talking about the incoming storm surge. All I could think was, "Hold my beer & watch this" :facepalm
