The wake-up call for Vontae probably did him some good. He likely landed in Indy knowing he needed to step it up, or his Grandma was gonna whup him. Who's to say he would have sorted himself out if he had stayed? That said, Jamar Taylor is the direct result of the Vontae trade, and he hasn't seen the field yet, so we lost one season's DB play as a result of the trade.
Remains to be seen whether Taylor will justify the deal. The saved cap money is essentially still sitting in Ross' bank account.
On balance, I'd probably have kept him, which feeds into my thread in VIP about roster churn with no discernible improvement.
