You dont trade top talents at their position to set a tone for a franchise. Philbin showed he would never be a winning coach when he came in and traded its most talented player. If you cant work with talented guys, you dont belong as the head of a NFL locker room.
Thats a big reason why this team is in the hell it is now.

Where is the reset button?
Vontae Davis is the Brian Hartline of cornerbacks. Can play the position but gets as many interceptions and game changing plays as Hartline seems to find the endzone. Definitely not worth the contract.

Sure there are. But top 5 talents don't grow on trees. By definition, there are only 5 in the NFL at a time.
When you have one, you thank your lucky stars and work with what you have however he may come.
Wallace is an above average player (making top dollar), and I guess has a better attitude than Marshall did. Even on his best day he is not in the same league of receiver as Marshall though.
I don't get blaming Philbin for trading Vontae. They were obviously disappointed that he didn't come to play ball. Surely word of that got to Ireland, but Hard Knocks showed pretty clearly that Ireland was the one making the decision in that regard. Philbin just didn't stand too much in his way.

You shouldn't be pissed, we have Brent Grimes. I feel much more confident with Grimes lined up against the other teams #1 WR than I ever did with Vontae. Grimes is also much more intelligent. There were some truly brutal bone head moments from Vontae on hard knocks.

Davis is a good corner, a #1 corner at that. But the contract he got? Jesus.....
Colts GM is destroying that team with terrible trades and crazy contracts.
We traded Davis because he was a head case and a bit of a diva. Late to practice, out of shape, etc.

The wake-up call for Vontae probably did him some good. He likely landed in Indy knowing he needed to step it up, or his Grandma was gonna whup him. Who's to say he would have sorted himself out if he had stayed? That said, Jamar Taylor is the direct result of the Vontae trade, and he hasn't seen the field yet, so we lost one season's DB play as a result of the trade.
Remains to be seen whether Taylor will justify the deal. The saved cap money is essentially still sitting in Ross' bank account.
On balance, I'd probably have kept him, which feeds into my thread in VIP about roster churn with no discernible improvement.

I was completely shocked when I saw the money he got! Vontae is only a marginally decent corner. Definitely nowhere near the top of the rankings.
