After watching the first episode Hard Knocks, some light was shed on the Vontae Davis situation. From what I take from it, they see a player with all the tools and a high ceiling who is not pushing himself. I remember and incident last year, Vontae was called out by a teammate (I think it was Brandon Marshall) because he showed up at practice hung over. I believe Vontae has been going through his football career on his talent with no one around to push him towards acheiving more. This new staff is putting across a clear message to him; "you are good, but you can be much better." I hope his status as #2 on the depth chart proves to be a humbling experience for him and they keep him there until he starts to work harder. This is probably the first time in his life he was listed as a non-starter in anything, and I hope that's all it will take to motivate him to want to be better. It seems that Sean Smith and Richard Marshall understands this, and they are being rewarded for their hard work, now it's time for the light to come on for Vontae. Once he gets it, watch it, he will be that All-Pro CB (or damn close to it) most of us envisioned for him. How Vontae responds to a staff that wants more out of him is one storyline I think is worth watching.

I applaud this staff for not allowing Vontae to continue his complacent ways like other staffs in the past, and continue to push him to become the best he can possibly be.

You just can't have guys like that around, the attitude can be contagious and there has to be a higher standard instilled. You play for the Miami Dolphins, that should make you feel proud and motivated to belong and scared to not be a part of it. It seems like Vontae thinks he's arrived and can just cruise from here on out.

I think the funniest part was Reshad Jones just basically saying **** off by his facial expression

But serious though, If he responds to the coaching, he'll be ok.

I agree with all post above.

This is unchartered waters for him, and a competitor like him will respond to this depth chart ranking. This is exactly what he needs. He'll get it, and the Fins will benefit from it.

He had a hard time adjusting when he was a rookie as well.

I think he just needs a little more time to adjust is all. He obviously loves to play football.

Coyle is the guy who is really showing up the prior DC though IMO.

He is getting after them, ALL of them. :d-day:

He looked liked the biggest idiot on the show. I hope he learns from the experience. He's been exposed on on national TV. Let's see how he responds.

I was shocked to see Vontae's attitude. But I think the coach hit the nail on the head when he told Vontae that hes just so used to being an athletic freak. Vontae has been able to get by his entire life because he is so gifted physically. Hopefully he understands now that in the NFL its not just about that. You need to be a PRO!

So TRUE! Considering DBs is his specialty, I'm expecting signifcant improvement from our secondary this year.

Well said!!!!

I really like Philbins demeanor. Very Dungy-esque.

I think the players respect the staff, and the staff shows them some space and mutual respect.

Haven't heard of this type of harmony on the team for as long as I can remember.

No doubt. And I also like what Philbin said about not using the depth chart to motivate players. He stated he does not use the depth chart to motivate players, cause if a depth chart is needed to motivate you, then you are not the type of player that fits in his plans long term...

I think Vontae pushed the previous regime as far as he could knowing he would always be handed the #1 spot considering his draft status and talent...but not with this regime!
