I have a question re: Saban's draft

Here is another quick though...

Will there be a "better" RB in next year's draft... better than Ronnie?

Probably not... so...
better to get a QB next year, since it seems to be much deeper at QB.

You could make an argument that Reggie Bush is better, but I would take Brown over Bush anyway.

Even a good QB is useless unless the rest of your team is strong. Coach Sabin is building the a team for the future. When he draft our franchise QB the rest of the team will be there ready. Feely or Gus will be fine until then. Either of them are capable of this team into the playoffs. Bringing young QB into a stable cohesive offense will give us a quicker return on our money. Who knows maybe with some GOOD coaching Feely or Rosenthal can bloom into QB of the Future and we can use our draft picks to build elsewhere.

I believe Coach Saban had said that if Adrian McPherson would have still been available for our 4th rd pick he would have gave it a serious thought about drafting him. But I'm kind of glad he didn't, I believe Travis Daniels is going to be a very good player for us.

That was the fifth round, he said he did consider Orton in the 4th though.

Oh, don't get me wrong. It was a great draft. We'll have more starters out of that draft than all of Wannspeil's combined.

I meant just regarding the QB position. Did he blow THAT? Or are we missing something?

Every player has a draft grade and apparently when each round came up, there was another player who graded out higher than whatever QB was still available.

Looks like Saban is building a team that will in the future beable to support (possibly) a rookie QB. Which means if we have a solid D and a good running game that the QB will only need to just take care of the ball for the most part untill he learns everything and can be effective on his own level.

that's the one that hurts. Although I like Daniels, Orton was the QB i was hoping for.

true, and what I'm thinking is that Saban was basically considering AJ a rookie, and that he saw something in his practices that made him think that he had whatever it takes to win.

Reggie Bush is in the right system. He doesn't have the size speed ratio that RB has.
RB would out perform him at the combine just like he did everyone else this year, and he would have jumped ahead of Bush on most draft boards.

You have to remember he also promised Frerotte a chance at fighting for the starting spot and it did look like Feely was improving at the end of last year so he might of took those things into consideration before drafting a quarterback plus he might of figured its a rebuilding a year so if 1 of these qb's don't pan out he can just draft next year and the players he drafted from this years can develope into starters quicker since he is a defensive minded coach plus he wouldn't have heat from the fans to start the quarterback they drafted if hes losing this season.

is it possible that he saw, or sees something in AJ, or Gus that made pass on any one of the QBs that we could have had?

Or did he blow it?

He didn't really blow it, Alex Smith was taken (even though I'm STILL not sold on him) and look how far Rogers slid, that shows how most teams felt about HIS talent. Ronnie was there and I'm assuming he thought RB was the most immediate impact need for us. While I'm not Saban so IDK for sure, that's just my take, there wasn't a QB that warranted a 1st round pick, and, in the positions we picked in the other rounds, he must not have felt the available QBs should go there. I don't think he blew it at all, I am surprisingly pleased with our draft, it's the first one we've had to cheer about in a LOOOONG time. I'd much rather grab the guys we did this year and suffer one more year with a crap QB (or try to salvage something in FA) than have drafted a QB high and STILL have no QB for a year or two whuile he sits and learns, PLUS none of the guys we got.

It's neither of those options. He sees a stop-gap QB in one of them. Does it matter if he got his QB this year? Next year he should snatch one up, but where's your QB prospect in 2005's 1st round that offers more than Ronnie Brown will to the future of this team? Who is 2005's QB prospect that offers more than Matt Roth does to the future of this team? Where was 2005's 3rd round QB prospect that offered more to the future of the Dolphins than Channing Crowder? These were the questions and progressions of Saban on draft day. Mistake? No, I don't believe he made one.

The other part of your questions was does he see something in Frerotte and Feeley? For a season, a short transitional phase in the process of rebuilding a franchise, perhaps. Long-term, no.

he probably saw that no qb's were worthing taking in this years draft.

definitely next years draft is stacked with qbs and i see saban scouting and taking one of them.

I don't see it this way at all. Leinart is the only sure fire 1st round QB in next years draft. If Jacobs comes out it depends on how he does this year, though I think he's a big talent.

After that who do you have? Paul Pinegar from Fresno St. might be the third best guy and we could actually take a look at him due to the SAban/Belichick connection.

I guess I just wish we had taken someone in the draft to try and develop at least. If nothing else, you get a free spot on your P-squad for one.

It would be hard to decide whom to not draft out of our picks, but I never really liked the pick of Roth as I thought we were pretty deep on the DL.

Saban took the players he thought were the best avialable at that pick. He didn't blow anything.

You might be on to something here...Good quote.
That scenario you made is Pittsburgh last year on draft day.
And look how successful Ben Rothlisberger was as a starter at the NFL level last year because he was surrounded by a such a complete team and was just asked to take care of the ball. He didn't post great numbers, but the only number that really counts, W's.
