I love Nick Saban...BUT..he is full of crap on this one.

Why is he downplaying Will Poole? The guy was a first round talent that was on the fast track to the starting unit.....

He also graded out higher according to Mel Phillips than Pat Surtain last year.....

I don't get why Saban had to do this.....maybe he is just fluffing it off so the team doesn't get down...afterall...we are a team....and no one guy is bigger than the sum of it's parts.

hopefully for the same reason that patriots didn't miss ty law.

And, Section, you mentioned it in your original thread, one guy isn't bigger than the team as a whole. You over react to the loss of one cornerback and what does that say to the rest of your team? I think what you do is downplay it, and send the message that hey guys, we can succeed because of how all 11 players on the field do as a unit, not how one individual performs..

thats right and thats the mentality that has won with the pats recently...
as fans we sometimes freak out saying oh my this guy is out etc....
but if u have a team playing as one you can have even a earthwind moreland or a wr/brand new db plugged in there and the defensive scheme works....

not many people out there including myself thought the pats secondary and defense would hold the colts to 3 total points, and they were lucky to get those as a sure int was dropped in the endzone right before they kicked the fg......

Poole was probably going to be the starter going into this season but what's not to say one of the other corners won't emerge in camp. Both Patriots starting corners went down last year and they didn't seem to be discouraged. It's about protecting the secondary by applying pressure on the offense.

I dont see the big deal with what Saban had to say about Poole. Hes a 4th rounder who started 1 game last year, and was drafted by spielly/wanny. Alot of guys have first round grades on predraft sites and what not it doesnt really mean anything at all.

I fail to see where Saban is full of crap.

Or Roosevelt Colvin, the year he was their most-prized FA signing, but missed the whole season due to a knee injury - and they won the Super Bowl anyway.

From the Finheaven front page:

Head Coach Nick Saban indicated Friday that the loss of cornerback Will Poole  who probably is out for the season with a knee injury  is not a major blow to the defense.

"Will Poole was a second-year player, a developmental player at that position who hadn't played that much," Saban said in a transcript on the Dolphins' official Web site. "We were looking to see the best way to use him in our defense, whether it was to be a fifth defensive back, or any other way he could best contribute."

The corner position is critical to the defense," Saban said. "I think that is the position that probably can put limitations on what you can do."

In an interview on 790-AM, Saban acknowledged an interest in former New England cornerback Ty Law, who is coming back from a broken foot.

"It makes it really, really difficult when a guy is coming off an injury to try to make a prediction as to what his productivity could be," Saban said.

Yes to the last part of your post, Also Poole has never started full time in the NFL so he is still somewhat of an unknown.

well, I would say its early and june 1 is around the corner. Also look at New England.....do they have all world corners? no they dont. in fact, they took a WR and made him part time CB. So what does that tell ya? it tells ya that safety is the position we need to worry about more than anything. Not that CB should be written off. But once again, Saban will build it in years to come, not this year, even though I think we could do some damage this year and surprise, I do not think Saban is worried about what transpires this year in the grand scheme of things. Long haul.

People want to get up in arms and shut you up the minute you mention how alike the two coaches are and how simular things will be, but, it's hard to ignore when there are so many circumstances that smack you right in the face of how simular some things all. I know not everything will be done as if they are mirror images, but, why ignore the fact that there ARE simularties. This happens to be one of them. The sum of the team or defense isn't defined by a single piece...

The statement is standard coaching psychology. If the Dolphins were to lose the entire starting defense to injuries he would still say that nothing has changed and its time for the backups to step up and prove themselves. Being an NFL coach requires never looking back and never feeling sorry for yourself

What is he supposed to say?

That they miss Will Poole...and they don't know how they are going to replace him...

You know people mystify me...here's a nice prospect that isn't even a starter yet...and we're up in arms.

It stinks to lose any player to injury, but if you follow our recent history its pretty well expected by now.
