Martin having the messages stashed away for seven months is telling. His Mom is a lawyer, so maybe he thought he could get something out of this. He makes a public display, then the story blows up in the media, and he is there to scoop up cash at the end. He knew it was not working out and he would likely be cut this year or the next. He gets cut before year 4 and there goes his pension. This might have all been an angle to sue either the team or the league. How can you go out around town and smooch it up with a guy that you think is going to harm you.
Absolutely no proof whatsoever for what you're theorizing. You have to have been bullied at one time to understand what it feels like to be constantly harassed. I was bullied bad in junior high by a sophomore in high school. He was almost a foot taller than me and was into karate. He did everything to me from take my hat to try to light my hair on fire on the bus once. You go through a stage where you think if you're nice to the guy, he'll stop it. He never does. Finally, after weeks of this, he was pushing me (out of sight from everyone so he could maintain his "great guy image") and I snapped and punched him in the mouth. I felt so good then, because I bloodied his lip. Although he went on to kick my ass pretty good.
I hear people talking about "Martin should have done this" and "should have done that". That's great to be able to look at it from a crystal clear angle that is void of emotion, fear and anger. What if I had went to my parents or the school? He might have been suspended, but would have come back and beat the hell out of me, and I would have been labelled as a "narc". I chose the path that I didn't want to go down, but after I punched him, his harassment decreased to the point where he totally left me alone.
Now it's quite a difference comparing what happened to me in junior high and what happened to a 23 year old and 30+ year old in an NFL locker room, but many of the elements are the same. Martin was damned if he did and damned if he didn't. Had he gone to Philbin with this, he would have been labelled a narc or tattle-tale and would have been ostracized in the locker room. Had he confronted Richie in the locker room, which most likely would have gone to blows (see the TMZ video for how tactfully Richie acts), he would have been labelled a trouble-maker and trying to disrupt team unity. I think Martin was just at the end of his rope and didn't know what to do. I'm just glad he didn't try to kill himself.
So before you think of Jon Martin as coward, gold digger, con man, liar, etc., try looking at it from his perspective.
