I understand Tannehill not being signed yet. but Egnew and Vernon??!!!

Henne missed the morning practice of day 1 in 2008, but was signed in time for the evening practice.
.

See what happens when a guy isn't in camp on time? Henne misses the morning practice, then is too far behind and turns into a bust in Miami and now is in Jacksonville...

Just kidding flamers!

I'm not sure what you mean by long hold out but both of Nick Saban's 1st round draft picks, Ronnie Brown and Jason Allen, missed the start of training camp in a contract dispute.
Yeah to me a long hold out would be missing a few ps games.

Egnew has signed! Just tanny left!

Heard yesterday some details about the offset language battle that is going on.

The NFL would like to have offset language in every contract going forward. It protects them in the cases like what happened to Jake Delomme.
Carolina released him and owed him $12M, Cleveland picked him up and paid him also. Delomme essentially double dipped for that year get paid by 2 teams.
The NFL wants that pay to add up to the original money but no more.

The reason they are implementing this in the rookie contracts is for leverage against the veterans. The veteran free agents will never agree to this if the rookies aren't being asked to do the same thing. So they are setting presidence with the rookies so that when the teams sign later free agent contracts that can ask for offsets in them as well.

In Tannenhill's case the offset may not amount to that much if he gets cut. But add in all the contracts on a team and this could amount to substantial saving to a team that cuts ways with their players.

Anyway that was the explanation the gave on sirius nfl radio

did any of the other 1st round picks agree to the offset language? if yes... ok ... if no... then why the **** are we the ones playing hardball?

2 other teams were asking for the same as us. Jacksonville is still asking Blackmon and Minnesota with Kalil. Although Kalil just sign 30 minutes ago. Not sure if he caved or the viking gave up the battle.

I can see Them wanting it for that nuckle head Blackmon.

Vikings caved in. As Ad Brandt put it "the vikings fought the good fight with Kalil" but eventually gave into the no offset language point.

Some of the first rounders agreed to it, but none in the top 10. Pretty sure none in the top half of the draft.

then **** it. why bother. the players are clearly setting a precedent that they won't sign if the offset language is present in a contract offer. No need to bang our heads against the wall over this.

you get a dui or in trouble with the law as a rookie prior to signing your deal the team should have the right to put in offset language imo...otherwise nope

Its really trivial. The amount of money we would save is a joke. We would still have to pay them if no team signed them, and we would have to make up the difference in money if the contract is lower then the rookie one. Id rather have that rookie know that we can confidence in them then sit here and haggle over a few hundred thousand bucks.

If Tannehill(or Luck or Griffen) bust then we are in alot more trouble then saving a few dollars.

The Owners are greedy. Its not about what they will save in this one contract with RT. Its about the future contracts and being able to do this almost every time.
More than 200 rookies agreed to this language this year. In a few years this will be the norm because of turnover in the league. The top dogs can avoid it but the everyday player has no choice but to accept.

And it the long run it could amount to alot of money for owners. In Jake Delommes case it would have saved the Panthers $7M for just one season for just one player.

Granted the JD scenario doesn't happen that offen but that is a chunk of money even to a greedy billonaires.

About 95% of the rookies have already agreed to the language. They just don't have the leverage to say no.

No doubt. We are trying to set a precedent. That being said, if Tannehill is a franchise quarterback he will bring in alot more revenue then he cost. Ross(and Ireland by extension) should have realized that drafting Tannehill would cost them money. Quarterbacks always cost money. But they would make more money in the long run if he works out, so why gamble and allow doubts to enter into his confidence just to try and save a few bucks later?

Seems like we are cutting off our nose to spite our face.

I didn't realize Dawn Aponte had become our new GM. :ponder:

Clearly shes the driver in all this.

The Dolphins, we’ve been told, are taking a hard line in part because the employee negotiating the contract, Dawn Aponte, once worked for the league’s management council, which is believed to be pushing teams not to budge on the offset issues. (For most of the top 10 picks, that strategy has yet to work.)

Was a horrible move hiring this twit! We havent been in any significantly better cap position than we were before she came here.
