how would he rank in the 2012 crop of WRs drafted?
Quick, Hill, Jeffery, Broyles, Randle, Posey, Graham, Sanu and Hilton were the WRs taken in rounds 2 and 3. Where does he rank in these prospects? I like the little i have seen out of him.
As a prospect? With his measurables, and a similar season of production to 2010, he would be a later 1st rounder. Easily. Same type of player as Demaryius Thomas No real route running (that I've seen...) but big big body and tremendous ability to get off the jam. People like to compare him to Stephen Hill, and I was one of those people, but once I went back and looked at D.T. in college vs Stephen Hill (very easy to do since they are on the same screen!) I saw much more similarity between D.T. and Gordon. He's not as big as D.T. (6'3, 235 for DT while 6'3 225 for Gordon) but he's much more compact than Stephen Hill. Hill is 6'5 205. He's a bean pole compared to Gordon.
Whats funny is that when you look at players on the field, you will watch Gordon, you will watch Thomas, and you will watch Hill, and if you were asked who was the fastest player... you'd probably say Thomas, then a fight between Gordon and Hill for 2nd. In reality, going by the "40 yard dash times", it's Hill and it's not even close. Game speed, Gordon brings it. He's not a strider like a Tommy Streeter from Miami, he's got the quick burst that turns into a 2nd gear.
The more I see of him, the more I like him. He's got
a lot of potential, something this receiver corps desperately needs. Is it 3rd round potential? Depends. In a world where Brian Quick goes #33 overall though... I'm struggling to understand why Gordon isn't worth a 3rd round pick.
I'm also dismissing his dismissal from Baylor as an isolated weed incident, because as CK constantly points out (correctly, might I add) when a coaching staff is willing to go to bat for a guy that is no longer on their squad, I think that says enough.
edit: Oddly enough, I like him more than Quick, but not as much as Randle... Randle is shifty as hell. He's got running back type moves when he has the ball, which at his size is rare. I'm a big Randle fan. As a pure receiver he's not as good as Quick, IMO, but he's got a lot to offer. It's the reason I prefer guys like Dez Bryant over Miles Austin. Austin is the better receiver, but I see HOMERUN type ability. I'm a potential whore, what can I say.
As this relates to Gordon... Gordon is not Randle. He's not T.O. or Brandon Marshall after the catch. He's not Randy Moss on the deep ball. He's Malcom Floyd from the Chargers.
Sanu, from Rutgers, is a strange receiver. He does NOT have the home run hitter ability like most guys... but some guys make it work. Sanu is the Acura to Hakeem Nicks Mercedes. Nice and all, and you certainly won't look down on it, but in the end, it's replaceable and you know the difference when you feel it.
