I would also prefer to trade up and take Taylor Lewan. IMHO, he looks like he may be the best ZBS pass protector in this draft. Great track record in college, looked smooth to the eye test, great length and strength, durable, hungry, and tested fantastically at the combine. What's not to like? He is good in the run game, and has a bit of a grinder attitude.
Greg Robinson is the best in the run game, and has the most potential, but he isn't going to be ready next year and we don't really know if he ever will be ready. Two of the best pass protection years we ever had were from rookie LT's, Richmond Webb and Jake Long. Taylor Lewan looks like he could step right in and be exceptional at LT and should only get better.
Looking at the draft now, it looks doubtful that Lewan goes ahead of (in no particular order) Clowney, Mack, Bridgewater, Bortles, Watkins, Robinson or Matthews. That means the highest his market would reach would be 8th. If he makes it to 10th, Detroit can get just about the same player at 19 that they get at 10 (top 3 CB) and would likely be interested in trading down. If we got Lewan, we'd have the money to pay Soliai this year and bring in a Zane Beadles to play next to Lewan. It would save us a lot of money for the next 5 years, not to mention Tannehill's blind side being secure for the next 10 years.
I like Monroe, and if we can get him, I'm all for it. But, he will not come cheaply, and if we could trade up to around 10, we could assure ourselves of a very good LT. What I don't want to happen is to see us get picky and miss out on the top FA's and draft picks at LT. Lewan fits us better than any other player in the draft. While I like Zack Martin, to me, he projects as an elite LG and only a solid LT.
