Idiot bashes the 72' Dolphins yet again.

I wrote an email to this jerky

You are an idiot and I can't believe you get paid to write such poor articles. First off you love to say how all the teams they played had losing records except for 2. But fail to mention how there were no dome stadiums back then. You also fail to mention that the 72 Dolphins had to win the AFC Championship in Pittsburgh. Now I don't know about you but that is a pretty tough place to play in the playoffs even if the steel curtain didn't arrive yet. But that same Steeler team was considered the team of the 70's even if the were matured enough yet to win it all. I wasn't alive for the 72 team but I am a big Dolfan. And for you to question the feat that they accomplished without another team going undefeated is beyond me. You will never see another unbeaten team in the NFL. The 72 Miami Dolphins are legends because they went unbeaten and one the Super Bowl. They will be talked about every NFL season when there are no more unbeaten teams. And that you poor accuse for a journalist makes them immortal.....

What do you guys think

I love the enthusiasm, but if you are going to write to a journalist, please work on your spelling. You risk losing all credibility........

Then Griese completely lying and saying they were "pulling for them" when referring to the Colts.

Griese said that tongue in cheek. He has a very subtle sense of humor. It annoyed me Monday when the newspaper accounts didn't take that into account, although it was better portrayed in some articles on Tuesday. During one of his ABC college football telecasts late in the season his play by play man Brad Nessler asked Griese about the Colts and Griese said, "hopefully there won't be another (unbeaten season) this year." There is no way he was pulling for the Colts. Heck, he even wanted the '98 Broncos to lose a game when his son Brian was a rookie QB with them.

He's just jealous that his great Broncos team got slapped in the face by the lowly Dolphins this year. Must be a hard pill to swallow knowing that the Broncos were owned by the Dolphins to start the Broncos season.
I was privledged to see the 72 Dolphins play and they were a great team by anyones standards and nothing anyone says can tarnish their accomplishment.

I read his article. Sounded like it was written by an 8 year old , except he was collecting a check for his "story".

I think there's a reason why this Mike Spence guy is writing for the Pueblo Cheiftain, and that article sums it up pretty good.

This was a good year to once again highlight one of our most prized, and vehemently "envied" accomplishments.
Shula and Griese did all they could to downplay its purely superlative distinction, while offering almost humorous accolades, in propping up the latest wouldbe perfectionists.
Relish in it. Imagine for a moment, any other team's name, in place of ours.
The only things that come to mind, is perhaps the Packers associated relevance with the Lombardi Trophy, and the teams that have earned dynasty recognition.
This otoh, sits like a big fat cherry, that gets worshiped, celebrated, and paid homage to annually, each year, growing a bit more plump, a lil more juicy, and as witnessed this year, that much more difficult to pluck.

Our old gang of 72, can well afford to be the classy wellwishers they have been, drinking diet coke, instead of toasting wine or champagne, because after all, its no big deal.
Right?
Its not as if colleges use the term "unbeaten" with any significance.
This silly record has been nothing more than a footnote, to the headline topic of playoffs these past couple weeks.

The fact is, we would suggest takin the easiest route possible, as the climb gets a wee bit steep, and before ya know it, the last turnoff can get kinda dark, and rutted out.
But no worries, the next time somebody anticipates makin it out our way, we'll be sure to leave the light on for em!

Note to Spence...

Mr. Spence:

Next time you decide it is your job and personal responsibility to go about bashing a group of men you know nothing about, you might just want to do your research.

The stories about the 72 ’Phins getting together to toast champagne are mostly the work of fiction perpetuated by irresponsible sports writers. A couple of guys, Bob Griese and Nick Buoniconti, evidentially got together some years ago and raised a glass, but it has not become some far ranging tradition as you make it out to be. Further, several members of that team have stated that they would enjoy seeing another team go undefeated and some even go so far as to acknowledge that if a team were to do it with today’s schedule, it would be an even greater accomplishment.

I’ve been a Dolphins fan since I was a kid growing up in Miami. You know, the only people that really blow this thing out of proportion are the sports media that make such a big deal out of it each and every year, especially when a team is at 10-0 or better. I guess it sells papers. I guess it sells advertising to the networks. So there. I guess I’ll accuse you and your fellows of being nothing but selfish, money grabbing, ignorant so-and-so’sâ€â€without bothering to do you the service of getting to know about you. How’s that for snap judgments?

Personally, as a fan, I am proud of the undefeated season and prouder still that it is a feat yet to be duplicated. But, you know, when some other team comes along and equals that feat, I will smile for them as well (as long as it isn’t the Jets or the Raiders). You see, the record being matched will not change my life in one way or another, just as I’m certain it will not change the lives of Zonk, Anderson, Scott, Kolen, Kuch, Little, Twilley or any of the others. But, I suspect that it might change yours. Although I may be wrong about that as it’s probably easy to write stories aout people you know so little aboutâ€â€you just make them up!

heres mine:

Mike, I read your article on the 72 Dolphins and the celebrating Indy's loss. First let me say that I became a Dolphin fan the year the fins made it to the Super bowl against Dallas when in the second grade. In defense of those players who pop the cork everytime a team loses when going for the undefeated season, I would say that they do not get any recognition as a great team of the past. Every time super bowl teams are mentioned as great (top five ect.), the 72 Dolphins are never mentioned. There are some phin players from that team who claim that the 73' 14-2 dolphins were an even better team than the undefeated season. That season is never mentioned either. The undefeated claim is the only thing that they can hang on to as greatness and it gets recognized every year a great team tries to do it. Im sure there are plenty of dolphin players who could give a rats pattooty about the record (Jake Scott).

With that said, I saw the interview of Bob Griese and Reggie Wayne. Regardless of how Bob felt deep inside about the colts going undefeated is pure speculation. I heard some phin players and Don shula say that they thought that they could do it. I do not understand how that translates into an across the board celebration of the Indy loss. I heard players say that it would be kind of cool if they had the 05 Indy colts to celebrate with every year till they die.

If the dolphins played an easy schedule in 72 its only because the league set it up that way. You play the teams on your schedule and that is that. The Indy colts have played in a weak division for a couple of years now. The hardest teams they played this year are Cincy and San Diego and the Jaguars (who I think are overrated and got 4 easy games playing Tennessee and the Houston Bush's). Indy played New England when they were beat up. I could sit here and pick apart Indy's schedule all day long if you want me to. Thats not my point. When the dolphins went undefeated, they beat Pittsburgh in the playoffs and Cleveland (I believe) who were very good football teams. Then they beat the Washington Redskins. I guess they were a suck *** team as well.

I hope I made my point but somehow, the media in all its integrity knows better.

I'm seeing this type of idiocy all over the internet. It bugs me but I'm actually enjoying knocking some of it down with plenty of specifics. Inevitably the people bashing the '72 Dolphins are simpletons and if you confront them with basic facts and a structured argument they backpedal or run away. I've been greeted by profanity on many sites but that's an admission of defeat.

The '72 Dolphins had 9 Pro Bowlers. The '73 Dolphins had 11. Those were the years of 40 man rosters so basically 1/4 of the Miami team was voted allstar caliber. Now that's a fairly powerful argument against the idiocy that it was a flawed and lucky team that lacked special talent. Especially when you consider Keuchenberg didn't make the Pro Bowl either of those years, despite being a Hall of Fame semifinalist many times recently, and Griese obviously didn't make the '72 Pro Bowl after breaking his ankle early in the year against San Diego. Anyone wanting to argue the team was overrated has to somehow believe we fooled the Pro Bowl voters, as well as the scoreboard for 17 consecutive weeks.

Just emailed the moron. Good point with the Hall of Famers. Hadn't thought of it but I decided to add it. This was my email

Just finished reading your article. I don't get why the media keeps bringing up their celebration. It's a fantastic accomplishment. No other team in the history of the sport has done it. Why shouldn't they celebrate? They didn't celebrate in the public forum. The media sought them out and reported that they celebrate their accomplishment and now you're upset. If anyone's small minded, it's you people in the media. Typical, you build people up only to turn around and try to tear them down.

You diminish their accomplishment by stating that they had an easy schedule. You fail to mention that they played with a backup quarterback for the majority of the season! When they got into the playoffs they had to go to Pittsburgh and still won. They completely dominated the Redskins. If it wasn't for the Garo fiasco they would have shutout the opposing team. How many shutouts have you seen in the SuperBowl? The answer is zero. How many Hall of Famers did that team have? Did they just get lucky? That was one of the great teams of all time and they accomplished one of the greatest feats any team in any sport has ever accomplished and your response to them celebrating this accomplishment is to whine about their schedule? Pathetic.

Nice job. I hope this guy realises what he has done.

LOL! The Publo Cheiftan!? I can't believe his article was even taken that seriously. I live about 30min away from Pueblo, CO and I can tell you that this paper isn't even worth considering. Unless you want information on the local happennings...which isn't much. I heard a joke recently that went, "My wife told me to kiss her where it stinks...so I drove her to Pueblo." That pretty much sums it up. I'm sure there are some people from Pueblo who frequent this site and I mean no offense to them personally. It's just that city. Yuk!

And as for the 72' Fins, who cares if their schedlue was easy. They were still underdogs going into the Super Bowl and STILL won. Over a 3 year span that team lost a total of about 4-6- games (I can't remember). I'm sure plenty of teams have come and gone with schedules that were just as easy and I don't remember seeing any of them going undefeated.

Please tell me what I spelled wrong cause I can't see it. I made a grammar mistake but I think all the spelling is correct. And as far as losing credibility I don't think spelling something wrong makes an email credible. The point I make gives it credibility.
