You gotta love the ol' "he'll be there later argument" when nobody knows otherwise.

James was a priority if the top 3 OT's did not fall (which they didn't) . . . if the team had ANY inkling that he wouldn't be available later, they were right in just taking him there. Have some conviction, trust in your board and be done with it. If the guy becomes a solid starting RT, it won't matter about the "value" of the pick anyway.

Glove fit for this team . . . we did alot of BPA later in the draft, we filled our biggest need early.

What if he lost James to another team? I would be killing him for it today. Plus, he was right that a late one/early two run on linemen occurred.

Would have sucked if somebody "stole" James from us and we were forced to "reach" for a dud like Marqise Lee...

Anyway, Hickey was absolutely right to not take the trade if he had James rated as a first rounder. Where these trade "experts" are getting caught up is they think James was horrible value at 19 and we could have magically gotten some of that value back by making a bad trade, doesn't work that way. The value pie is only so big and it doesn't magically get bigger just because both GMs believe they got the best of the trade, if one persons slice gets bigger then somebody elses slice must have gotten smaller.

It's disgraceful he did not trade down. Two suitors looking to move up and give a 3rd, browns and Saints.

I got no issue with James, but nobody would have taken him before 27 and if they did, Sua'Filo, Bitonio, Kouandijio and even Morgan Moses would still have been there. Massively deep draft and a 3rd would have been a massive pick up.

1st we do not know if James would have went after the fins pick...get the guy you want when you can.

Also Billy Turner was a coveted player....again, get the guy you want while you can...

Hickey did what he needed to for Tannehill to have the chance to succeed. It's now on Philbin and Tannehill to execute.

He was the #1 rated RT. He will be a solid starter in the NFL. Whether he has a 2nd round grade or a first round grade... HE was a huge need and he instantly makes our line much better (i hope) . We then got two studs with our 2nd and 3rd round pick. So it all evens out. We needed line help... And we addressed it.


Nobody knows if James would have lasted another 8 picks. I think he may have, but there is also a good chance he may not have. Im sure Hickey and the fins waited to the last second to put the pick in, because im sure they debated for a few rounds what they were going to do. And ultimately they decided to grab their guy and not take the risk. And i think it was the right thing to do.

I both understand and respectfully disagree with that. At the end of the day, in foresight not hindsite as I sweated through the draft picks after

- the non trade down of pick #19 that would have gained an extra 3rd round pick

- the trade up of a 4th rd pick to move up and get Billy Turner. That not only cost us a 4th rd pick, but the higher of our two 4th rd picks, #116 instead of #125. That proved to be costly, imo. At the end of the day, as I suspected, Trai Turner and Martavis Bryant could easily have been Miami Dolphins, bottom line.

I have no idea why GMs are not listening to us highly trained Fans when it comes to trading up or down or who to take. Part of the whole trade thing is that someone wants to take your spot. And what if they want your spot to take your player?

We are now going to be in a football "dead zone" for a while when almost nothing will happen and on fan sites, people will be going at each other over things no one knows about. Cya in a couple of months.

And it's funny to me that you even bother posting regarding the Dolphins draft if you didn't weight he odds of James being available in a trade down at #27, Trai Turner being available with the passed on 3rd rd pick and Martavis Bryant being available with the traded #116 pick. The opportunity costs of the trade up and non- trade down were huge.

I also like James a lot and I think he starts day 1, but the value wasn't there... I guess if he comes out looking great then it won't matter in the long run, but still man... Could have had another 3rd rounder in there... A gem maybe.

Everyone keeps saying we could of had another pick like it was a guaranteed thing lol nobody knows for sure if that was an option regardless of reports thats all BS anyway. Id be hard pressed to believe that if he could of traded back got a 3rd and still grabbed James why wouldn't he do it thats common sense.

I bet the trade if there was one offered didn't make sense cause it may had put them behind someone who they thought would snag James, so why risk that if its your guy to fill a glaring need. Lineman are extremely valuable and he could have easily been snatched up being that he was the best one left on the board. Plus if you look at most mock drafts prior to the draft they all had James going in the first round around were the Dolphins picked or later in the first.

Dude, get a grip. The chances were excellent, by all accounts, that James would have been there at #27 in a trade down. The "yes, but maybe someone would have taken James" arguments are on pretty much a kindergarten level- there's almost always risk in a trade down, that's a given. The questions are the chances of your guy still being there and the value of the ocmpenation offered fro you to slide down.

The odds are highly in favor off Ja'Wuan James still being availble at #27, and even he wasn't there were other good OL available. The extent to which some people jumped on the James band wagon AFTER the report tha Miami considered him a 1st rd pick makes me laugh aloud.

The opportunity cost of not trading down and pocketing the extra 3rd rd pick, was, among others. Trai Turner or Martavis Bryant, take you pick. And that's the bottom line.

Playing the mental masturbatory "What If" game:

If Ireland had been either a lousier or better GM, Hickey wouldn't have either had to dig out of those holes he left, or even consider wheeling and dealing cuz he got first dibs on the OL he wanted and earlier picks in each round. Now compare that to Farmer, who knew for 2 weeks that Gordon was a goner, and that Burleson broke an arm yet could have had the quintessential game breakers in Watkins or Evans yet for a pick that he turned into Manziel, i(under commercial pressure by his soon to be incarcerated owner?), he took a very good CB instead of one of 3 others that were rated even higher on several mocks..and stilll didn't draft a WR at all. Can anyone say "whew.. we dodged a bullet!) So it's all relative.. cuz Hickey in this draft both addressed the team's most pressing and toxic need as well as then going "BPA" to snatch a potential game-changing wideout. :up:

Conviction is one thing, judging relative value is another. Hickey got it half right, the simple answer is that he should have taken the extra 3rd, the odds were excellent that he still would have gotten his man. A simple, simple trade down that could have gotten us Trai Turner or Martavis Bryant. We'll see how those two players turn out in a few years.
