If I have to read one more QB debate....

If I have to read one more QB debate....
I'm going to snap. We have played two preseason games. Last year at this time, there was no winner. In fact, all through preseason, Fiedler and Feeley were even. When it came time to play games that actually mattered, Fielder was 1-9 and Feeley was 3-5. If Frerotte starts, I have no doubt that he'll be replaced soon.

I cannot think of a single good reason why Frerotte should start. Common sense tells you that if these guys are at all close - and they clearly are - the younger guy should start. If we don't play Feeley, we're not going to get *anything* of value for him. Frerotte, to start, needs to be head and shoulders above Feeley, and there's absolutely no indication of that in two preseason games.

Wait until Week 5 of the preseason to make this judgment.

I completely agree.

Ferrotte was not stellar against Jax. He missed three or four passes by a mile. That's not winning the job.

I'm not saying Feeley should be given the job, but it's pointless to make the decision now.

The better play right now would be to start Feeley against Pittsburgh, let Ferrotte play #2 with the SAME personell that Feeley had and let's see what happens. Maybe Ferrotte succeeds in that situation, maybe Feeley does. WE DON'T KNOW. All those fans who are ready to ship Feeley off the team are blind IMO. Get some perspective.

What is obvious to me, is that this is clearly a REAL QB battle unlike last year when you had one QB who was green as grass (Feeley) and one QB who was horrible but had the ardor or the Head coach.

This year we have a solid match up. Ferrotte at least has an arm and has demonstrated some leadership. THIS is what Feeley truly needs. I like the idea of mixing and matching and givning both guys the SAME shot (ie with 1st string receivers and running game). If Ferrotte outplays Feeley in the same situations over the entire 4 game (5th game is meaningless) Preseason, then I'm okay with it. Feeley had a chance and got beat. Slamming the door on the competition in mid swing is not only stupid, it's counterproductive. Feeley obviously can throw the ball. His big problem is locking on to the receivers and forcing throws - something Ferrotte did as well.

Incidentally, why don't we outfit our QB's with shaded visors? Ala Jim McMahon. this would make it harder for the safeties to read who our QB is throwing to.

Anyway, let's all just relax. View the competition OBJECTIVELY, and let the battle play out. Ferrotte hasn't won this job yet. He's leading it because of his poise, but he was expected to lead it because he's more confident in the offense having been in it for three years. I would be worried if Ferrotte was not ahead at this point.

The good part of the Jax game, and this is what was so positive to me - was the improvement of the OLine - specifically Jeno James. I was worried there for a moment because we looked pretty sloppy against the Bears. But we regrouped, pointed out that the Frickin' Bears were blitzing and we were not ready for it, and we install the blitz pickups and WAM, our Oline looks pretty damn solid. We pass blocked and ran blocked quite effectively against what in my humble opinion is probably the best Dline in football.

Make no mistake, regardless of who is playing QB (and you could make a case based on the Jax game that Berlin and Rosenfels should be 1 and 2 - that's how ridiculous making a snap judgement is after the 2nd preseason game), how our Oline goes, so goes the Dolphins season.

I will make this bold statement - given our talent at the skill spots (RB, WR and TE) if our Oline dominates games, we will make the playoffs. I'm sure of it. We're not going to see a better front seven than the Jaguars this year. If we can play with those guys, we can play with anybody and we'll get better too because we've got Houck.

The original point of the poster here is sound: It's the second preseason game and let's all get some perspective. If we have a legitimate QB competition, then the team is going to benefit. I think based on the two games so far, the one thing that's clear is that we now have two QB's (maybe four) who are capapble and we have a coaching staff who's competent enough to select the best performance - graded and measured on an even playing field.

Be patient folks. Our team is HEADED in the right direction and that's what's important.

PS - I was very impressed with Travis Daniels, Mario Mann, Josh Shaw and Lorenzo Diamond. This Shaw kid looks to be the real deal. I love his attitude and I'd give him a shot in the rotation behind Traylor and Chester/Holliday.

PPS - I'd pick up Arturo Freeman, Bobby Taylor and Terrel Buckley on Minimum contracts. If you look at those guys, they're the type of guys that New England likes to bring in. Second tier talented players at the DB spot because we need a handful of nickel and dime guys - guys who can play both Safety and CB. Reggie Howard is too small and doesn't posess the speed to compensate. He will get killed against the fast #3's.

Maybe we should just run the wishbone! Start Brown at QB with Ricky, Morris and Harris in the backfield, and just run all the time!!!

The insanity has to stop!!!

Gus has the advantage, they are both having a fair competition, so get over it!

Why would we want anything of value from him? We wasted a 2nd round pick, deal with it.

AMEN I totally agree, we wasted a pick. The Rick and Wanny show made a poor decision, and for now Saban has to deal with it. If he doesn't think he can be a quality guy let him go and call the 2nd pick a write off. Hopefully people are now in place where we do not waste more senseless picks on bust's or never will be's

I'm not quite sure why this is 1) Such a big deal and 2)Such a clear cut decision.

I want the best QB to start period. Doesn't matter if it's Zach Thomas. Whoever is the best. Statistics lie and shouldn't be relied upon. I'm not exactly a Feeley fan, he tends to step back as he throws, doesn't look off defenders and has a terrible play fake. But in watching both games more than once, I do not see a clear difference. Since Frerotte has a working knowledge of the offensive system, he should be head and shoulders above the rest. At this point he is not. Feeleys first game would have been better had he not gotten hurt or even if Derrius makes the catch (both would've done better if Chicago didn't gameplan). The second game was with mostly second stringers and he didn't really have many plays or much of a chance. I just don't see this obvious difference. I think Frerotte is ahead but he should be with his prior knowledge. He is not as far ahead as he should be.

A better discussion is whether or not Berlin should get some snaps with the 2nd or even 1st team to see what he's made of. Better off keeping a very young, raw, moldable QB at 3rd string than one who is average and has a contract year ending. (I like Sage but would rather have younger talent at 3rd).

I do agree that we wasted a pick. No matter how good Feeley could turn out to be, he was never worth a second round pick based upon what he was and what he had done. Spielman can take his numbers system and shove up his a$$

I think I've been saying this for about a year now, over and over again...Feeley is just not starter material. A guy who doesn't like to practice is not going to learn a new offense like this, EVER. Plus his favorite hobby is throwing picks for TD's to the other team, he averages almost 1 per game...

Gus is the short term answer unfortunately, but we're lucky to even have him. Sage is decent enough to back him up this season, and if Gus goes down for some reason, Sage should finally get an opportunity to start if need be. Next year we sign a rookie or FA QB, let Gus play another season while the other learns the system, then off we go.
Two seasons to rebuild a team into a contender is not bad, as long as we're better this year and the next. We've still got a few issues with age to deal with as well.

I trust Saban to make the right decision as far as selecting the QB starter but I can honestly say that if he just hands the job over to Gus right now based on what he's seen so far (and let me emphasize "so far") I will be a little disappointed based on the reasons stated above!

I agree wholeheartedly. I trust Saban, but him saying Gus has the edge now does not by any stretch of the imagination mean that Gus is without a doubt our opening day starter. I think most people agree that what we've seen so far is not much.

Now that is just stupid. Morris should be QB with Ricky and ronnie in the backfield and Kay jay playing center:)

I think we need to find a way to acquire Rivers or Brees. Who agrees? Who disagrees?
